What Colour Cockers are hard to come by?
« on: April 26, 2012, 08:43:33 PM »
Just curious what colour  cockers  are hard to come by? I've been looking for a few hours now at Cockers and all I seem to see are lovely blue roans, orange roans and golden cockers.
Are choc/tan, blue roan and tan and possibly chocolate roan hard to come by?

blue roan and tan are fairly 'easy to come by' I believe, out of a litter of 3 my middle girl was the only one not blue roan and tan.
Choc and tan and choc roan have to have both parents carrying the liver gene (I believe!) which makes them more difficult, as generally the gene is recessive, meaning unless the 2 genes from mum and dad meet, the other colour take precedence (I think! :D)

there was another thread somewhere on liver genetics ... I'll try and find it :)

About 2 years ago I met a lady with an absolutely beautiful chocolate, tan & white cocker.  I told her how lovely she was and that you didn't see many of that colour and that they must be hard to find.  She said she didn't know cockers came in this colour but her dog was the only one of the litter in this colour and she was the last puppy so no-one else wanted her.  I told her she was very lucky.
