Swollen Face
« on: December 22, 2004, 11:35:16 AM »
I wonder if anyone could offer any further guidance for our cocker Scooby who has not been too well.  He has had diorrhea for a couple of days and then we noticed him itching his tail and testicals.  Then very suddenly one side of his face swelled up.  We whizzed him to the vets who could not piece all of the symptoms together.  He said that Scooby's anal glands were quite full and emptied them   He also gave him a shot of antibiotics and a steroid.  His face has since gone down but he is still trying to bite his tail.  He doesn't appear too poorly in himself and is still enjoying walks and his boiled rice!  Any ideas of what it could be would be welcomed.

Hmmm, sounds like an allergy of some sort - Indie had this when he was bitten by a wasp. Has he had anything to eat that's not normal for him recently?

Infected salivary glands perhaps ?  combined with the full anal glands too ?

The steroid injection will last about 72 hrs so keep a close eye after that to see if the face swells again - how old is Scooby - if he was a pup I would say perhaps teething ?  has he been vaccinated recently - any flea treatments used that he could have reacted to ?  anything poisonous in the house - poinsettia plants are poisonous so keep the dogs well away from those over Xmas.

Scooby is two years old.  As far as we are aware he hasn't had anything different to eat but who knows what the monkey has been mouching around in on his walks.  We did wonder whether it was the Christmas tree, although he never had a reaction last year.  Anyway we will keep our eye on him - his symptoms seem to have settled down a bit but he is a little more sleepy and has been shivering a little (however he does shiver quite easily when chilly.)

Hi,
Tia got a swollen face on one side which came up extremely quickly on New Years Eve. The Vet said that if it were summer he'd say wasp sting, but.....
He gave her a couple of jabs, she's on tablets for a week, but 36 hours on she's almost back to normal.
She didn't seem bothered by it one jot.
Happy New Year everyone,
Mary P

A few years ago we (very stupidly) gave Tilly a M*Donalds chip - just one.... within about 2 hours her whole face was swollen - and we had to go to the vets - an antihistamine jab and a steroid jab later she was nearly back to normal the next day.
Just goes to show though how the weirdest little things can make them react.
