Glomer made me really worried today
« on: August 25, 2011, 09:06:50 PM »
So I took Glomer for a little walk, the same way we've been taking every single day since he came.
I thought he would be happy, because it's been 3 days that he hasn't gone out because it has been raining too much. And today was a sunny, beautiful day and he is now fully vaccined.
But the second we were out of the door he started crying. Not a little crying, it did seem I was trying to kill him!  :o Seriously, people were staring at me and I wasn't even touching him!
I thought maybe he was scared, so I picked him and took him to a calmer place. Same thing. He would sit and cry or jump all over me (crying) as if there was a big bad monster after him. He cried loudly! He was desperate! Pulling the leash and stuff, trying to jump on my lap, a whole circus.
I tried everything for about half an hour and he was still doing the same.
One of my vets is across the street, so I took him there because I thought he could be in pain or something, but she said he is fine. He didn't cry at all when he was there.

What happened? Has any of you ever experienced anything like that? Do you think I should try again? I wanted to cry with him I guess. Sometimes I wish pets could tell us what's wrong...

Is your puppy a boy or a girl!!!.....OOOOPs just seen that its a boy..sorrrrry..

Nothing is happening..Its just he/she is so young and its a whole new world out side....Its not going to happen today or tomarow..its going to take a steady process of a little at a time so he can get use to the great out doors..Some pups take to it like a duck out of water others will not..Are Peggy was the same people thought we was murdering a black thing on the end of the lead...

Just take your time with your new pup be calm and keep reassuring your pup by talking to Him/her all the time..Theres a good girl/Boy keep it up..but DON'T PULL(but turn around and walk the other way)Never pull  or this will discourage the poor thing(as he could slip out his collar and run for it by pulling this ware i like a harness on the dog as to a collar my opinion only)...You will take six steps forward and a dozen back but you will get there in the end...

Like you have said take him away to some ware  its nice and quite...

Hm, I see. And there was I, desperate as usual, thinking he was sick or something. I need to learn how to keep cooler I guess.
So that's normal. I feel better.

But he should apologize to me for making me seem like the worst mommy ever!   :embarassed:

Poor thing, I guess he didn't remember how it was out there. I'll try to take him somewhere even quieter tomorrow. Let's see if we can make this baby boy enjoy the outdoors environment.

And thank you so much for your help!

Have you tried enticing with treats and/or taking one of his toys to wave in front of him. It might mean going back to basics and just carrying him out to socialise for a few days.

My friend had a cocker named Glomer. He was the only cocker I've met and I loved him dearly, but he passed a couple of months ago. Glomer was the only name I could think of!

My Glomer is the one on my avatar, with the big cute eyes!

Last night I tried again and he did the same thing. BUT, I guess I fould what the problem was. And it's something very stupid...

In the morning when I came back home, he played a little and then used the puppy pad.
And last night, he cried and cried and cried and something came to my mind.
I went back to the car and got a puppy ad I had there and placed in front of him. He peed, I threw the puppy pad out and we could go on with our walk with no problems.

I guess he has learned so well to use the puppy pads that he won't go anywhere else. And I guess he cries to announce he has to go. He did it on my sofa this morning and I rushed him to the puppy pad and he peed and then he was ok.

Also, he continuously pulled the leash. I also have a harness, so I tried that. He stopped pulling it, but I must say it's much harder to walk him on the harness, but I guess it's more comfortable.
I was using a leash because people told me it would be easier to teach him how to walk next to you with a leash. It is easier, but he definitely doesn't like it.

@Katayn: Clover was the same when we first went out walking, and still is sometimes! I do now make sure that she has a wee and/or poo in the garden before we go for a walk. Even so she will still whimper at times.  I think part of the reason she hares along at 100 miles an hour on the way home is also to do with needing to get back to the garden to go to the loo! I will have to work on getting her to go elsewhere otherwise we'll never be able to go out and about for a day with her!!!  Hopefully Glomer and Clover will both soon get the hang of toiletting when out of their own homes/garden!!! By the way, he looks gorgeous from what I can see of him in your avatar!  :luv:

Quote...Also, he continuously pulled the leash...

Right what you must do if hes pulling on the leash...(Take a handfull of treats with you)As he pulls the leash..You stop...Turn around and walk the other way..If he over takes you again and pulls STOP turn around and walk the other way..(Never pull him) It will not happen stright away ..but you must keep this up untill he gets the hang of it by NOT pulling..And that YOU are NOT going to give up..As soon as the leash goes tight stop and turn around and walk the other way...When de does deside not to pull Big prases and treats...

Penny's just the same. She rushes into the garden after our walk and does a great long pee that she's obviously been saving up. Have to get over this one if we're ever going to go out for a long day! You'd think sniffing around where other dogs have been would give them the idea, but no...

@seaangler - thanks for the training  tip you gave Catayn, as I can benefit from that, too - I had been making Clover stop, but not turning back the other way! Can't wait to try this on our next walk as Clover is unbearable at times, pulling and criss crossing.

@Jonnydog: they are funny, aren't they?! Still, I guess if we were out for a very long time they would eventually have to go, somewhere, but not sure how long Clover would whine and whimper beforehand!

Snoo...  I am no trainer..And i would never intend to be...

You would find this task in most training books....

This is the way most dogs are tault to do..I am only  doing it the same way..as others would do...Chris

P.S Peggy still criss crosses at times when on a lead...like a dam hoover >:(

@seaangler - no but you have more recent experience than I have - our last two spaniels passed away over 15 yrs ago!!! Training ideas have altered a lot over the years, I've noticed. More kindness and rewarding for doing right - much better for both dog and master/mistress!  :D

Sorry, but I don't understand the leash tip. Maybe it is the language issue (?).
He does walk on the leash, no problem. Always next to me, almost perfectly. But he gets the leash in his mouth while walking. I don't have to stop or anything like it. He follows my pace. I just feel he's tryin to tell me something by doing that. Do you think I should walk to the other side as well?

He has been doing great and our walks have been really pleasant. I have to take the puppy pad with me. Sometimes he'll use it, sometimes he'll wait until we get home. But I would like him to know it's ok to do it on the street.
Good to know I am not the only one with this problem!  :lol2:

Thank you all for all the help! ;)
