Title: Mocha and the partridge
Post by: anita96 on February 06, 2007, 11:30:06 AM
I had mocha out on some training and we tried him on cold game.  I was a bit nervous that he would not bring it back but he was great.  We set up a the exercise along a fence on the left and about 2 foot from the fence set up temporary netting.  This is to ensure that the dog can only run back to you and not bolt with the prize.  He was very excited to see the bird and rather than expecting him to sit steady while a throw the bird down the tunnel I put him on the lead and he was chomping at the bit to go.  I will work on the steadiness in the next session, it was important to me that he did actually want to pick up the game.  He ran in picked it up with no messing about I blew the recall whistle and he ran straight back down to tunnel and presented the bird.  I was so proud.

We did one more retrieve and finished on a high.  ;) like its that easy!!

Notes for next time get him steady.

Excellent!

Sure makes it easier when they are keen on picking up the bird!  :005:

great job Mocha, its a great feeling when they do it naturally, cos its blooming hard if they don't enjoy picking game up to encourage them to do it.

The lady I train with did the same exercise with her toller after mocha, she has picked up game before but not much, it was amazing to see the difference vixen just didn't want to pick it up she pushed it around abit, but when sue had it in her hand the dog was desperate for it but still won't hold it.  So I am pleased that he is a natural to it, although I am sure that that won't always be the case, I still have to get him steady which is proving very difficult because he has tasted the forbidden fruit and chased pheasants till his hearts content or I catch him!! :005:
