insurance
« on: February 21, 2012, 02:12:20 PM »
Hi

I think after reading a few posts I am paying too much for pet insurance. I am with pet plan and pay £28 per month. Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Also...I want lifetime cover that pays out promptly!

I am with petplan an that sounds like a very good price
i have been with them for 21 years and would not change
they always pay up i have never had a clam turned down
i have cover for life and pay £43.00 a month
it dose not take them long to payout
Some say you only get what you pay for.......

I pay much more than that with M&S and I really believe that you get what you pay for!    You have to remember that you probably pay for extras that some policies don't give.  I know mine gives mileage should you need to drive to a specialist, holiday cancellation if your dog becomes sick, emergency kennel cover if you have to go to hospital, acupuncture, homeopathy, hydrotherapy and a raft of other things.  The temptation is to think that you will never use them.  That is what I thought until Lyla had her operation.   :-\

Sheryl i was with M & S when we just had Erin but prices became astronomical...Argos is match for match ..premium cover and covers all of the things you mention in your post. However i imagine when it comes to renewal at end of the year the price will jump. I am sure they give you a good price first time round in the hope you stay with them

Just to update............have changed insurance to Axa for £13.89 per month. Still the same cover(£7000) that petplan had so quite chuffed! Also took out a policy wit the vets which covers worming  fleas, vacs etc for £13 per month so still cheaper with the two policies than the one petplan one.........so well chuffed!
Thanks all for your comments!

I pay £28 for Lyla and £29 for Kali.  I accept what M&S told me which is that vets fees get higher and higher and so do ops and treatments and regardless of whether you claim or not, this has to be absorbed some way!  To my mind, although it is quite high, I am happy with it bearing in mind the service I get, the additional things it covers and the professionalism with which I was treated when I called repeatedly over Lyla.  Even if for Lyla I had been paying that price since day one (and I haven't), I still have just given them a bill for way more than double what I have paid in.

Sheryl that not too bad a price compared to some quotes i had..m&S quoted me £49 for Erin and £31 for Tilly. I am aware that where you live has some bearing on cost so thats maybe why quote was high for me

Well I have John Lewis insurance and my fees have barely gone up over 4 years, despite £4000 claim for Alfies operation!  They were the cheapest I found, pay out within 2 weeks max, and have lifetime cover of £7000. I pay £17 per month.

That is really good for M&S, I used to have the dogs with them when I first got them back in the day of the zero excess and the premiums were £20-something each but then after a few years they shot up (and the zero excess was ditched). I switched to Healthy Pets when they sent me a renewal of over £40 for Ro and over £30 for Tills.

Wow, I wish £40 was all I'd be paying for my lurcher's insurance. He is with M&S, but he is 10 years old now and had major claims over the last two years. I have just got my renewal for him and it comes to £108/MONTH!!! But I have checked others and although they are cheaper (around £60/month with AXA for example), it isn't enough to make it worth to change and loose cover for Dylan's pre-existing conditions which could get very expensive if they needed treatment again (thousands of £)! So I am stuck, for now anyway.
My saluki (7 years) is with M&S too, he is just under £50/month. My American cocker (5 years) is with AXA at around £35/month and Skye, my English cocker (1 years old) is £16/month with AXA too.

I am in the same boat as you with 4 dogs but after all the strife I get with claiming. I am thinking of not bothering and saving the money instead.
You are paying £209 approximately a month over 12 months thats near enough £2500 thats a lot of treatment. Supposed its a bit of a gamble nothing happens serious in the next 12-24 months but it could save a fair chunk of money. If we do it it will save us in the region of £1500 per year. The last 12 months has been the worse for the dogs with Lulu cutting a paw, Troy fighting an adder and losing and Jazz poking a stick in her eye. It still came out less than what we are paying for insurance.
