adder alert
« on: August 07, 2012, 06:13:18 PM »
I've just received the terrible news of a cocker's death due to an adder bite.

It took place in Chobham in Surrey.

My dog's breeder emailed me as it had been one of her puppies. Sad times.

I don't know all the details but I felt I should warn others to be aware of the danger.

The dog's name was Finn and I don't know if the owner is a COL or not.

How awful  :'(

I don't actually know what you're supposed to do if they get an adder bite, will definitely look into it now.

Take a look at this past post - piriton is the thing to carry and then vets!

Yes, carry Piriton and give one tablet should your dog encounter a bite.  Carry dog to car/home as movement must be restricted to slow down movement of poison in system.  Ring vet in advance and advise them you are bringing you dog down due to an adder bite.

My heart goes out to the owner and breeder of this cocker.   :'(

Very sad  :'( :'(

I think you also have to ensure that the vet keeps a supply of antidote - not all vets do and it needs to be administered asap   ;)

Very scary - I have never seen an adder round here but I know they are around so I dread Coco discovering one  :-\

It's very scary. I walk on Chobham common almost very day. Fenton was bitten last year, but luckily by a young adder, carried him to the car dashed to vets and treated him quickly. They are everywhere on Surrey heathland   ph34r

That's very sad.  Just last Sunday we were out walking in Mabie forest, Dumfriesshire, when I called the dogs over to the side of the track to let some cyclists go by.  I nearly put my foot on one but TBH I moved swiftly as I thought it was a great big pile of dog poo I was stepping on.  It was a female so quite dark brown.  Fortunately I saw it before the dogs did and hustled them off.  The snake slithered off and they still hadn't seen it.

That's so sad, I wasn't aware that you had poisonous snakes in the UK.

The adder is the only one.  They are quite shy though, and most dogs survive bites.

This is so sad, maybe a note on snake bites and what to do could be a sticky?

Good idea - if anyone would like to write a sticky thread on adder bites, that would be great - just let us know when it's being posted and one of the Mods can do the necessary to make it a sticky one.
