Hello - this is my first posting. We lost our (nearly) 11 year old male blue roan cocker, Jasper, 10 days ago. He became sick at the turn of the year, was diagnosed with jaundice and a barrage of tests failed to identify the cause. Finally the vet decided on surgery and then we found an inoperable tumor. We had to let Jasper go and we are only just beginning to get over it. :'(
We still have Joe, Jasper's litter mate, another blue roan boy. We want to find a friend for Joe - he and his brother had been together from birth. Joe's picked up over the last couple of days but we really feel he should have some dog company of his own. Some say a puppy, others say a laid back male, still others say an older female. The most important thing for us is that it works for Joe and whichever dog we can bring into our home. You seem like people who really know and care for cockers and we'd really appreciate any help you could give us to find a friend for Joe and a new dog for us to care for also.
Thank you all.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss :'( Run free Jasper :luv:
I hope you will be able to find a new baby soon x

Hi - what a sad time for you,
We've just introduced a second dog into our family last week and that was because we could be faceing the fact of losing our border collie within the next few years or so. We ended up having a rescue cocker from Many Tears.
The best thing i can say is make sure you are 110% ready to add a new dog into your life. Then when introducing a new dog for the first time - take your dog for a walk first before the introduction to drain some energy, then take them both for a good walk together, and i mean just walk - at quite a quick pace. And then they will hopefully they will accept each other a lot better and quicker.
A word of caution though if you are seriously thinging of taking on a rescue dog, they are not a quick fix to replacing the dog that was lost (but hopefully you are alredy aware of that). We've just taken on a ex-breeding bitch who was never been housetrained, never walked on a lead, never been in a house and heard a hoover etc, never known how to play - they are a lot of work, and a lot of time and commitment is needed.
best of luck finding your new friend

so sorry to hear about your loss. :'(

i wish you luck, and hope you find your new friend. :luv:

I am sorry to hear about your loss. Where abouts in the country are you? I have recently helped someone like you with finding a new Cocker. Keep your eyes peeled on here and scan the local rescue pages. Also phone the coordinator for Cocker rescue in your area. Let us know exactly what you are looking for, age, sex ect and we will all try and keep an eye out. Good luck xx

so sorry about your loss :'( If you contact cockerspaniel rescue they have some lovely dogs in. If you go for an older female rather than a pup or another male it might be a little easier on your household.
These are the contact info for the club rescue services:
http://www.thecockerspanielclub.co.uk/rescue.htm
and these are the dogs pages:

If you contact your local representative they should be able to help you. Look forward to hearing about your new addition.

Hello everyone - thank you so very much for all of your kind responses. We are very mindful that we cannot replace Jasper and we appreciate the insights. Location wise, we are based in Beckenham, Kent, so I will also contact The Cocker Spaniel Club Southern Area Rescue Co-ordinator to ask for their help.
The consensus seems to be pointing to an older female but we also take on board the comments about dealing with an ex-breeding bitch. We really don't want to get this wrong and know it's a big decision, particularly to ensure that Joe isn't more upset than he has been by losing his brother. :'( We never expected to be in this position yet because we didn't expect to lose Jaspie yet, so we are feeling our way with this.
We'll let you know how we get on but in the meantime please do keep a look out for us. Thank you all.

I don't know how far you are willing to travel but Many Tears have just had a 4 year old Ex-breading cocker in "Annabel" - black and white - she looks gorgeous
http://www.freewebs.com/manytearsrescue/dogslookingforhomes.htm
We had a 7 hour round trip to fetch Remy from there last week, and it was well worth it.
-
Thank you. We have sent them an e-mail so we'll let you know.
-
Annabel is already being home vetted. Spencer at Foal Farm is going home today. We will keep looking for a friend for Joe.
Thanks
-
did you contact the club rescue?? would you consider another breed?? I know that weimaraner club rescue have an awful lot of dogs in at the moment... ;)

Hi there. We did contact the Cocker Spaniel Club rescue - in the southern region it seems that they have 1 10 year old blue roan male cocker. This feels too close to our recent loss so we don't feel able to take that forward. We do really want to have another cocker so I guess we'll just keep looking.
Many thanks

Please look at four paws animal rescue. They have a lovely looking girl. I can't get her out of my mind. The family are emigrating - it would be like leaving one of my children behind. She looks beautiful. I so know how you feel, we lost our cocker last June and it is heart breaking. Everyone said to wait before getting another. We lasted until October, but our new Reggie has helped to fill a huge void in our hearts. It as been hard. If someone else doesn't give this beauty a home, I know I'll be tempted but Reggie is too young. Good luck and I hope you feel a little better soon. I never knew it was possible to cry so much. My husband said it was worse than when his dad died and they were close! Think his dad would have something to say about that! I like to think him and Marmy are together.

Have you seen 'Baby' at 'Allbreeds Rescue'
-
Thank you for both of these leads on Baby and Holly - we have e-mailed for both. We totally understand the comment about crying so much - even two and a half weeks on we can't stop ourselves welling up.
Let's hope for some luck with one - or even both! - of these beautiful girls.
Thank you

I am so pleased you have contacted them. She looks so lovely. I think it is meant to be easier to introduce a girl once you have a boy in the house already. My sister has contacted them about the labrador they have. So fingers crossed for both dogs. Best wishes

I hope you get a friend for you baby soon, I lost my dog 13 months ago, for me......crying seemed never ending, I'm also looking to rescue a cocker, but its not as easy as it sounds, I've emailed and completed 4 applications on this site but its based on a first come first served basis, (which is only fair) but I feel I'm never 1st!! or is it just me being impatient!!!!! (probably!!) ;)

We have completed an adoption form for Baby who is being fostered in North West London. We are awaiting news on Holly from 4Paws. You do seem to have to move very quickly, I agree, and we also have to make sure that Joe is happy with any possible new friend. All fingers - and paws - are crossed here! :D
-
Hi all. We have submitted for Baby. I was typing so fast and so nervously that I hope we got it all in. Joey seems to be lower at weekends and we really want to find the right chum for him in our new baby. Thanks and again all fingers and paws crossed! I can't type about how bereft we are still about Jaspy but we really want to focus on moving forward and giving a lovely dog a lovely home. I am hoping.
-
Hi all
Just to update you it seems that Baby is reserved pending home checks - great news for her but sadly it's not for us since we're not the lucky people. :'( I guess we'll just keep looking. Thanks for all your best wishes.
-
:'( sorry to hear that dawnie, I hope you find a new addition soon. I too am still looking I feel like i've been looking ages (well a month almost to the day!) I dont know if that a long time or not as I had my first cocker from a pup. hopefully we'll both get lucky soon. ;)

I'm afraid (for you anyway) that Holly is being homechecked for her possible new home tomorrow. We do get cockers in from time to time so worth keeping an eye out
-
Thanks Penny - I had checked out the website and saw that Holly was "reserved". We're keeping an eye out wherever we can at the moment.

Hi, I am quite new to the site, we lost our 15 year old golden cocker Lucy last summer and we were devastated...we then lost Bracken our old boy golden cocker last month aged 13 and we were upset again. We now have 5 month old litter mates... boys Beri and Bramble and the pain is easier .
I hope you find another cocker soon.......x :D I have been on the site about a week now and I am finding it so useful. Wish we had space for more cockers !!! :D
-
Thank you for your mail. I have to admit that I am becoming more tempted by the puppy route but not sure how our old chap Joe would take to that with some youngsters to look after! We'll keep looking though.
-
Dawnie, you'll probably find that getting the right puppy form a good breeder will take just as much time and complication. Wait it out and either way your perfect doggie will find you. ;)
-
Dawnie, just posted on a couple of Ex breeding bitches from Many Tears. There are a few COL's that have taken these special dogs on they hopefully will come along and give you some advice as its not straight forward. If you have the love and the time........
-
Really appreciate the heads up - thank you so much. They both look like darlings and we're following up.

Hello all
Just to let you know that we spoke with Many Tears but have run into a problem because our remaining cocker isn't castrated. We never had Jasper and Joe "done" - our vet wasn't that pushy about it and our preference was not to - and I understand Many Tears' policy is to insist all animals in the household are neutered. I do appreciate their position but unfortunately it means we can't be considered by them unless and until we have Joe castrated - not necessarily something we had contemplated at his older age, unless medically necessary.
So for us we are back to the drawing board and we'll need to have a think about where to go from here.
Thanks all

Well all we have taken the plunge and bought a new puppy! We went to see a breeder in Kent on Sunday and chose Hector, :luv: who we can pick up March 12. I am already a nervous wreck thinking about bringing Hector and Joe together!
We will take pictures when we go to visit Hector on Sunday. I am so excited about our new family member. I am sure Joe is going to be a real sweetie with the little one!
-
Good luck with your new puppy :D I love the name Hector!
-
Oh dawnie thats lovely :luv: :luv: what colour is your new baby?
