Title: Scrumpy at MT: 11-month-old blue roan girl
Post by: *Lucy* on June 30, 2009, 09:51:04 PM
Just saw this poor lass  :luv:

SCRUMPY

(http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/LoobyLu/Scrumpy-Cocker-30-06-09a.jpg) (http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz159/LoobyLu/Scrumpy-Cocker-30-06-09b.jpg)

30-06-09 Scrumpy is a poor sweet 11 month old cocker. She has bad mange but we are treating this. She will be a beautiful dog with time but will need that time to get better. She has also been living in a breeding kennels and so has never lived in a home. She will need another dog as a role model and to be her friend. She has not got the type of mange that is catching so other dogs will be safe.

PLEASE NOTE: Ex-breeding dogs are normally best homed with another dog as they have usually never lived in a house before. They are used to living with other dogs and learn faster with another to copy from. This also helps with house training and learning how to walk on a lead. They will make lovely pets but do need a lot of love, time and patience.

This dog is at the main rescue centre in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. To adopt a dog from Many Tears Animal Rescue please make sure you have read our adoption procedures before applying.  You will be home checked and you and all members of your family and any dog(s) who will be living with the dog MUST come to meet the new dog.  All our dogs are micro-chipped, inoculated and spayed/neutered unless there is a medical reason for not doing so.  If you are adopting a puppy you will need to provide details of training classes in your area. We ask for a minimum adoption fee of £150.  If you are interest in adopting please call the rescue centre between 10am and 4pm on 01269 843084. We are unable to return phone calls so please try again if your call is not answered.

Poor girl, she doesn't look good at all, but I think she'll be gorgeous given time and lots of TLC. :luv:

I will definitely be considering taking on a dog like her once my puppy is old enough to be a good role model.

Poor girl.  :'( :'( She looks so sad and so in need of a loving home.

I can't believe that she is only 3 months older than Gabby - she is still a baby - she looks much much older.

Fingers crossed that she gets a lovely forever home soon.

Poor baby :'( well thank god she is with Sylvia now, I'm sure she will soon be snapped up and find a wonderful loving family who will care for her for the rest of her life (hopefully by a COL then we can have lots of up dates and photos)
Shooting those people who do this for money is to good for them >:D Me I would put those >:D >:D swines in cages and leave them short of food, warmth and any thing else to make their lives hell and dam awful  >:( >:(  and delight in it  :lol2: :lol2: They say you reap what you sow, so they are in for a rough ride some time in this life you can't get away from karma.
just wish I could give her a home by we can't have more than two at a time. need a bigger house ;)

I want Scrumpy! I am too late to phone tonight. I think Rufus would be very kind to her, and she will like pottering in the garden. I expect she will have gone in the morning, just my luck, because we have not had a home check. I want to make her happy. Anyone know anything about the mange treatment?

Oh I hope you can speak to them, it would be wonderful if she went to a COL-er. I would imagine the mange treatment involves medicated baths and maybe some topical ointment or cream. I hope you can speak to MT soon, let us know and good luck!

Well done you massive cyber hugs coming your way  :luv:  Her face is so sad, it would be wonderful for her to go to a lovely new home, the idea of her pottering round in a garden relaxing and enjoying herself makes me just a little bit leaky eyed!
Keeping everything crossed she is able to come home with you and we can see her learn to love life  :luv: :luv:

I am getting nervous. I hope they won't hold it against me that I am in Chichester. I understand fully how strict the adoption procedures necessarily are. Can anyone tell me what the homecheck will look for? I have a double gate down the side passage. The house is detached with a garden about 45 feet by 55 feet. The green is about 250 meters away, and across the green is the cycle track, with fields and woods. I use the car to get to other places. The road outside is an estate road. There is a dog flap to the back garden. I have a cat.  I will use the training where I do agility. Rufus is neutered and insured and registered with a vet. I use stronghold on the cat and dog every 4 weeks. Rufus has a groomer who does him every twelve weeks. She has said she will do a second dog, but this would presumable be after the mange has cleared. I have a crate. What else will I need to do?

Have you filled in an Adoption Form & submitted it to Many Tears? Since you're too late to call today, I think you should fill in the form asap, then you can call them in the morning. Good Luck  ;)

I was told when I phoned for another poppet from MT that the adoption form is below the dog's details, but I cannot find one for Scrumpy. Am I looking in the right place?

You can't fill in an adoption form if they are at the centre, get the contact email details, along the left hand side you will find contact us details, send an email with scrumpy as the subject line and basically tell them you are interested, your home cicumstances etc, they will get back to you, ring again at 10am and tell them that you emailed things can get a bit hectic there ;)

OMG My son and I are going to meet Scrumpy with Rufus tomorrow. Wish us luck! I am scared! Her skin is really bad, but they say the coat grow back. She has been spayed, but they are not sure if she has been bred from.(at 11 months!) She is reserved for us! Waiting for the home checker to call. Then I've got to put the cover on the pond. If we are allowed to have her any advice on what to take to get her home in? Rufus is normally in the boot on his blanket, and the crate doesn't fit. There is a dog guard! Better get some more carpet rescue as she is not house trained.

Hope you get on OK tomorrow. Could you borrow a seat belt harness for her for the journey? I've got a spare one at the moment, but I live too far away to be any use. There must be someone not too far from you who has one they could lend?

Regarding the housetraining - I was told Violet wasn't housetrained but after nearly 3 weeks and only one "accident". I think they were wrong (in the nicest possible way  :005:)

Sorry to disappoint everyone. Sylvia says Scrumpy is not the dog for me because her condition is so bad she will need an experienced dog owner or it could cost a great deal to get her well, and would worry me too much. Luckily I got through again before I travelled. She does not think I should have a puppy farm dog either, but would consider me for other dogs. Wish the other person had said so this morning, and I would not have got so excited. Hope she finds the right person soon.
Never mind. Back to the drawing board. I may go for a cocker puppy.

I know you must be feeling very sad and disappointed right now :'( but I am a great believer in fate and that some where there is one very special dog waiting just for you at this moment to :luv: and also a soul mate (owner) for little Scrumpy.
Sadly we can't always see the greater picture ph34r which makes is harder I'm sure that it won't be long before we will be seeing on COL that you have found that special cocker baby.

Awww I am really sorry that you got your hopes built up, but I too am a great believer in fate it obviously wasn't meant to be. I am a little annoyed on one point though, why on earth should she make an assumption that you shoudn't give your home to a puupy farm dog/puppy on what basis did she come to that assumption ph34r. Over and over again on here you have people dissuading people from breeding as there are too many pups in rescue etc, but as far as op is concerned it looks like her only avenue is a well bred pup. She wants to rescue but is not deemed suitable, from her earlier posts she sounds like she ticks all the boxes. I may be shot down in flames here but I know the rescues need to find the right home but sometimes I do wonder wether the 'perfect ' home actually exsists. This sort of thing puts well meaning and caring people off attempting to get a rescue ::) Good luck in your search whichever route you take ;)

To be fair, Sylvia said she'd be happy to rehome non puppy farm dogs to her. This little one does sound like she's a bit of a mess, so on balence not perhaps the right one - the OP practically said that herself. Mcphee said she'd worry too much.

So, come on COL, is this little one's new home with one of us?

I think the problem is that Scrumpy needs to find a home with an existing dog. BUT there is no guarantee that the mange is not contagious. So the existing dog may catch it too. Most people I think would be reluctant to adopt a dog that may pass on a very uncomfortable, possibly even painful skin disease, not to mention the expense of having 2 dogs treated for it.

I think once Scrumpy has had some tests to find out what the problem is and whether or not it is contagious, people may be more willing to offer her a home.

Just my opinion  ph34r

I agree with all you've said Viv. I was commenting on bajoleth saying "This sort of thing puts well meaning and caring people off attempting to get a rescue." I'm guessing that the condition of the little dog was re assessed, and was deemed to be a difficult problem, rather than implying that Mcphee wasn't up to the task. Sylvia just said not this dog and didn't say not any dog.

Don't get down hearted that special little cocker will come your way.  I had loads of dissapointments, I was searching from October till the following July, when I came across Breeze, fortunately for me I had the help of 'jaspersmom' & hollyd443 which I was thankful of, all three of us searching whatever we could.

I experienced the same situation with MT, I was sent an email requesting me to contact them about a young cocker, I had shown an interest in, the young lady that answered me first, told me, yes, I was an ideal candidate but I needed to speak to Sylvia, when I managed to contact Sylvia I was told no.

By the time I found Breeze I was full of apprehension, because withthe passing of time I didn't think it was every going to happen. My only advice is keep trying..

Sorry it didn't work out. We too had a similar experience with MT.  The guy who does the foster side had phoned us after we showed interest in a dog + thought we were suitable.  Then Sylvia decided my 10 month old son would be too much.  (His reputation must have got out! :005:)

On a happy note Scrumpy has now been home vetted so fingers crossed she has found her forever loving home.

Hope you are right. She was reserved for me and my home vetting was at 6 yesterday. I wasn't told by Sylvia that I couln't have her until about 4.15 and she did not give any indication they had a suitable home then, in fact she intimated that a home may  be  difficult to find. MT must have cancelled the home check because no one turned up. Will contact Sussex cocker rescue next week as I cannot find a cocker match at a rescue centre.

I’ve just caught up with this and I feel so sorry for you, and angry that you have a perfectly good loving home, the willingness to look after this little one, and yet they say it’s a no go. >:D
All this little mite wants is someone to love and care for her I’m crying at the moment because I am so angry. If you thought you could not handle her (once you had seen her) then you would have said so.
I know MT do a very good job but I do wonder at times if they should no readdress there criteria.
I know I’m going to get into trouble now so….rant over. :luv:

Will contact Sussex cocker rescue next week as I cannot find a cocker match at a rescue centre.
You could also try NESSR , plus there are the Scottish spaniel rescues if you would want to travel a bit for your dog. :D

I understand your frustration, I've been in the same situation recently after losing Gari and being turned down for dogs who require other dogs in the home. I was quite upset at first, as I was very raw as it is, and felt I was then being punished for losing him. But when I thought about it, I realised that they are just putting the dogs first, although sometimes I wonder if they are missing out on potential good homes by being quite so strict. :-\

I hope you find your new dog soon. :-*

Maybe they are erring on the side of caution  - I guess being returned to a rescue after a mismatch can set a dog back in its recovery so they are trying to avoid this happening  :-\ It does seem tough but I would hate to be making the decisions as to which dog goes where - there's so much responsibility to find the right home for the dog and the right dog for the new owners.

I feel sad and angered by this somewhat, they say that rescue centres are bursting at the seems with unwanted dogs yet they make it very hard for genuine people to adopt.  I do also believe in fate and I believe that your perfect pup is just waiting for you to find him / her. Good luck in your continued search and I hope that we are all reading good news on here soon.
It really upsets me to see that little girl and know that she could have had a wonderful home. I know they have to be strict but come on!!!

My old girl Nelly who sadly passed away on 12 May this year, also came from Many Tears. She had originally been homed to a family and a few weeks later, MT found out that she was being abused in her home. Among the abuse she suffered was being beaten with a stick by a man :'(. To cut a long story short, thanks to my son, she eventually lost her fear of men, but she was always afraid of anything resembling a stick.

The point I'm trying to make is that MT are very very careful about who they let the dogs go to, but sometimes, a potential new owner manages to pull the wool over their eyes. When this is discovered, it makes MT even more selective about potential new homes. So please don't be too harsh on them. They are doing a fantastic job 7 days a week, for no pay. Their reward is in finding the dogs happy in their new homes.

Rescue centres also need to be responsible in rehoming as well, plus as Mary also said it doesn't mean MT have turned anyone down here full stop just not these dogs.

Yes rescue centres are bursting a lot of the times but often they're dogs some people wouldn't look twice at - sometimes just because they're not pretty enough.

As we've said before its far better to match the right dog up with the right owner - just because someone with a good home and who's a responsible owner it doesn't necessarily mean that they are what that dog needs either due to other cirumstances and especially if that particular dog has special needs

Being involved with a rescue myself I know we would rather wait for what we consider the right home for a particular special needs dog - some dogs are easier to place and so we may be spoilt for choice and even then we're bound to upset someone because we didn't choose them.

Thank you everybody for your support. I think my experience has prompted a useful exchange of ideas, and has helped me make up my mind. The only possible thing I would have changed is that having made it clear on email and phone that Rufus was my first dog, it would have been better to have been told straight off that poor little Scrumpy wasn't for me. However, we wouldn't have had this debate. I am highly relieved that quite by chance I phoned and did not make the 5 hour at least journey yesterday. It was quite funny, because I had a headache yesterday, but lots of school governor work to do, and I watched Murray. Rufus did something he never does. He kept pawing me as I was on the laptop. Then, when I had finished and was watching the match, he got on my lap and stayed there for the two final sets. Not sure it he was making the point that one gorgeous cocker is quite enough, or that it was getting late for his walk. It was lovely anyway.

I have to say that I feel that MT do a fantastic job and that I am glad that they take so much care in rehoming their dogs.  They always put the dog first and for me that is the right way to do things.  A great many of the dogs they get in are so severely traumatised that they need to be placed incredibly carefully and being returned to rescue would set them back so badly that it is a risk that they cannot take.

That said I do fully understand people's frustration because they may think that the home that they can offer is a brilliant one.  MT do know what they are doing though.  When we got Alice she was in a mess but it was only a few weeks later when a friend brought their children round  (we have none) that we realised that she is absolutely petrified of kids - and I mean really horribly afraid to the point where we asked our friends to leave!

Other rescues may not be as strict or as scrupulous in placing their dogs - but I wonder what the return rate is like compared to MT?

I do not think any one is doubting that MT do a fantastic job, as posts frequently tell us. I do not have any argument with that, and know nothing about their success rate or that of other rescues. I am not frustrated, because after a last minute hunch, I phoned. The original lady was still saying I could have her and the home check was imminent. I would have been vexed if knowing all my details which I set out explicitly and repeated on the phone, I had had a wasted journey. Of course if the dogs had an issue, or there was something about me which appeared different from what I had said, then travelling would have been my risk. As it is, I feel quite relieved, given how serious her condition is and that the nature of the mange has not yet been confirmed. I have decided, after discussion with an agility friend who is an experienced trainer and who rehomes herself, that I will use the local rehoming service, and her good offices to arrange a more realistic introduction process.  She is looking out for a young cocker bitch for me. She has known Rufus for a couple of years and sees him weekly at agility. In this way, I am saving a local rescue from taking another dog and I do not have to take up the valuable time of MT. TBH, if I didn't use CoL, I would not have known about them anyway, so it is all for the best.

Hi,
I was not suggesting MT was not doing a great job, I was just really sad that after reading the threads for this little girl and thinking she had found a wonderful loving home to then come across the bit where Mcphee was told she would not be considered for the dog.  I know they have said there will be other dogs she could be suitable for in the future.  I was just not seeing the bigger picture.
I apologise if I offended anyone this was not my intention I just felt frustrated I guess about this poor little dog. I do understand they have to be careful where they place these dogs and what I find shocking is what PennyB said about someone pulling the wool over their eyes I just don't understand why someone would go to the great lengths of getting a rescue dog, because lets face it its not easy to get a rescue and then abuse it. They need beating with a stick themselves. I was speaking to my vet on Friday and he was telling me how they had had puppys left on the doorstep and how he gets asked to put down day old puppys (not that he does he was just telling me what gets asked of him by heartless cruel people) There are some vile people out there. My comments about rescue was also based on when my mums friend lost her border collie she decided to get a rescue and was told she was too old at 58, she and her husband are both retired and love walking and are experienced owners of border collies they were devastated as they did not want a puppy they wanted an older dog. However fate intervened and they happened to find a stray collie or rather she found them by wandering about in their road they took her in and reported to the right people that they had her, but no one claimed her, so they kept her. From this experience I have it in my mind that they can be too fussy but then I don't see it from the rescues point.
I hope that the right dog comes along soon and again apologies for my rant.

Scrumpy is delicious. She is learning to play, learnt to walk well on a lead and her skin is SO much better. She is bouncy, happy, interested in everything and a smashing cocker. She will still need baths and her ointment but is well on the mend. She will make you laugh and reward you tenfold for any kindness.

Scrumpy is settling in well and needs a home with another gentle dog who would be happy for her to follow and cuddle up to. She walks very well on a lead and enjoys her walks. When Sandalwood comes and gives kisses Scrumpy copies her. She is a little nervous of sudden movements and loud noises but recovers very quickly. Her skin and fur are looking a lot better already.  If you are being put off by her bad skin you should come and see my daughter's westie who a couple of months ago was 95% bald with the same problem as Scrumpy.  He now is 100% better. Scrumpy gets on fine with cats and so far has had no accidents in the house. She is a real little sweetheart who would love a home of her own.
