Am trying not to panic
« on: May 16, 2004, 10:22:48 AM »
As some of you know Wilf  who's not quite made it to a year old (2 weeks time) has had cancer. Everything re his treatment has gone well and he's still the happy bouncy boy I adore.

I've found another lump that is similar to the last one but this time its on his other ear. Trouble is now that he's older he's got so much fur on that ear now and he wriggles so much its difficult to find out exactly what it looks like. Whatever it is its weepy like the last one but I'm hoping it could just be where some other puppy's teeth have got caught and broken the skin (they just love to hang on cocker ears don't they).

Thankfully I'm really friendly with the vet nurse here and will ask her if she'll help me shave away the fur tomorrow so I can see if its something to worry about. My regular vet's on holiday so it doesn't help in my panic either.

My vet practice know that while I'm quite sensible that I will be coming in from time to time for very little things that worry me about him.

Finger's x'd Penny - must be so hard for you not to worry given Wilf's history to date - poor wee lad. Doesn't seem to worry him too much tho and I guess whatever the outcome - that's the main thing - for now anyway.

Have just taken them swimming and its lovely to see how he enjoys it so much. Many thanks for all your support. Am probably being a big worrywort.

Edith, its a great poem:

The Power of the Dog

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find—it's your own affair—
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!),
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone—wherever it goes—for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear!

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent,
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve;
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long—
So why in—Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

Penny, did not realise that Wilf had had cancer.  I truly hope that everything turns out okay for you tomorrow and am sending lots of positive thoughts to you both.  Happy that it does not appear to be troubling him and he's enjoyed a fun day today.

  - this is me after reading the poem.
