Title: When is a cocker fully grown?
Post by: Sarafina on August 28, 2010, 12:57:52 PM
My cocker girl is now 8 months old, and weighing 8,5 kilos (she is not skinny nor chubby), is that small for a cocker her age?
Maybe somebody can tell me how big their dogs were at this age. When are they fully grown?

I love her to bits no matter what size she is of course, just wondering out of interest.
:)

I remember her on the other thread of "weight of puppies" at 4.5 being 7.2 kilos...

Scarlett is 10.5 at 7 months....it depends on the dog I think....

Selby is 10 kilos and he is just over 9 months, but i think he is on the skinny side, but he is not a big eater, until now that i have started him on Raw.

Ted was about 13kg by 7 months!  :o :o :o

I thought I was going to have a giant cocker, but he then pretty much stopped growing.  He's 10 months soon and has only gone up to 13.7kg.  He's definitely 'solidly built'.  :005:

Tali was weighed last week at about 7.5 months and he was 10.4kg. He still looks lanky, infact his back legs look too long for him. Keli had a wide, flat back. Tali, like Niki, has a less flat spine, but he may fill out and it flatten more.

Alfie was 11.5kg at about 8 months. He's quite tall and lanky at the moment (especially when wet :005:) although hasnt grown any taller for a while  so hopefully he has stopped growing upwards and will start growing outwards :shades:. xxx

Our babies are mini cockers but are in proportion :luv:

Llew is 11 kilos and is one year old in a week and a half. Blod is about the same - she is rounder but shorter  and she is one year and four months.

I got Lexi at a year old and would have thought that she was fully grown, but she did in fact continue to grow and is now slightly taller than Misha, both of them weigh about 9kg.

 :o :o :o I've obviously got the chunkster of the family!  :005:

He never went through the lanky stage, was always just very solid.  He looks slimmer now than he did a couple of months ago, but I think that's just because most of the puppy fluff has fallen out.  :luv:

Generally, most dogs are fully grown at around 1ish (with a few exceptions here and there no doubt!) but when I look at pics of my boys up until around 18 months to now (they are 3) they are very different again
- they grow muscle definition and extra curly hair :005: :005:  so personally, I think they continue to change for quite a few years.  I've got a picture of Alfie at 15 months and when I compare to recent ones, he is very different....but I didn't really notice the changes like you do when they are trippling in weight in a week :005:

Finn and Alfie are very similar in height and size.......Finn weighs 11.8 kgs and Alfie 12.2 - when you lift Alfie, you can really feel that extra half a stone!

Jeff is 10.25 kg at 10 months  He's a perfect cocker shape - compact and slightly chunky. Annie didn't really stop growing until she was about 18 months - she's long, skinny and goes like the clappers; e-type cocker.

Funny I was going to come on here and ask something similar, so I thought I'd tag on here.

We have just got back from our hols with Tilly and seen *loads* of cocker spaniels, but one of the things I was struck by was how though most of the dogs we saw had more bulk (muscle/fat) than Tilly, but at not quite 5 months she wasn't much shorter, she only looked smaller because she is so skinny right now - no idea what she weighs at the moment.

I know the muscle tends to come later and they fill out, but I wondered how long they grow height wise?  To give you an idea how big she is, when she sits in the smaller crate we got her at first (24x17x19) there isn't more than an inch or two clearance between her and her head - she can turn round, but she pretty much fills it and much prefers the next size up crate we bought her!  I seriously doubt when she fills out the smaller crate will be suitable to use!

Tali was weighed just now at 8 months, (07/09/10) and he is 11kg  :o

He looks very lanky and I can still feel his ribs and he has a waist so technically is a good shape.

I think Freddie was well over 12kg at 6 months but the vet said he was a perfect size. He is one of the biggest cockers I have come across in terms of leg/back length etc - when we were on holiday we saw lots of cockers but only 1 a similar size to Freddie. He has probably gained weight since then but there isn't an ounce of fat on him, he is as lean as anything - just a big frame I think :shades:

Had him weighed today for worming purposes - he will be 11 months on 20th Sept and currently weighs 14.8kg!

My freddie is a bit of a chunkster aswell

10.4kg at 6 months - though he is a chunky cocker, his paws still look a little too big for him, bless!

Might just chime in with my little girl's stats if that's ok...

Gracie is 5 1/2 months old and is as 'long' as our 8 yo Boy Bailey already (45cm neck to tail), though still shorter

We weighed her last night and she is 14.1 kg!!
I know for sure that she is not fully developed yet, but I do kind of hope she hasn't got too much more growing to do!

here's a link to a vid of her walking with Bailey (he weighs approx 18kg)

http://s871.photobucket.com/albums/ab277/Shell2010-1/?action=view&current=09072010037.mp4

I think she may be a little pudgy but I suspect its just puppy fat still and I just think she's just got the genes to grow to be a very big girl - her dad as a huge stature & weighed 21+kg

Anyone else think we're gonna need a bigger doggy door?? :)

Please don't take this the wrong way because as the owner of an overweight cat currently on a prescription diet I am the last person to be judgemental but to me, your pup does look like she could be a little overweight. As for puppy fat, I don't know because Freddie - 1 next month - has never had any. As far as I can tell from other posters on here and my vet, you should be able to see a well defined waist and feel all ribs and spine easily? With the amount of energy puppies burn, there maybe shouldn't be any excess weight??? How much of which food are you feeding? What about treats? Sorry if I am treading on toes here, I just know how difficult it is to get a pet to lose weight! ph34r

My puppy is still 8,5 kilos and now 9 months old.
She has'nt actually grown anything since she was about 5 months old. What do you think - does this mean she has reached her full size already?
I just thought it seems a little early, as others say they are fully grown at about 1 years old, or 1 1/2... ?

Just like humans, they can have growth spurts at different times.....it might be that she had a hooooge growth spurt earlier on in her life or there could be another just around the corner ;)

Ok, that might be it. I thought 8,5 seems small when the breed standard is about 12-15 kilos. Mine is smaller than many Cavaliers. But of course, cockers come in all sizes :)

Teun is almost 11 months and 12,5 kg.

Cockers aren't fully grown until they are about 2, years old. They stop growing around 10 months but then they still have to get there grown up posture. That takes longer.

Indie was 8.5 kilos upto a year old, she grew slightly taller just past a year and is now still only 10kgs and shes nearly 3, whereas Quinn who is 13 weeks old was 6 kilos last week.   Sounds just like you've got a petite girlie like mine.   :luv:

Thats right, mine is Petite. What do you mean about the grown-up posture? Just the way that they stand?

The mother of my cocker is also pretty small, but still quite a lot bigger than mine, while the father is medium or big cocker. Thats why I was a little bit surprised that my girl doesnt grow much anymore.

scarlett is 8 months and 10.4 kilos....
Her breeder expects her to stop her development at 12 kilos which will be ideal for a female show girl...

Posie is 4 months old and was weighed this week at 7kg. She is slender, with a definite waist and her ribs are easy to feel but not visible. the vet seems very happy with her.

I noticed that few (if any) people mentioned whether their Cocker was working or show. Posie is a worker and comparing her at 8 weeks to the show Cocker that was in the vet yesterday, I would say the show dog was definitely chunkier looking.

Posie hasn't had puppy fat since she was a few weeks old. She's getting tall and long though.

That is very true. Mine is a show cocker. She used to be pretty chubby, but now she is not chubby anymore. But she is not very tall, and has a small built body I think.

Have any of you noticed that your dog stopped growing for a long while, then grew more later after 8 months? (Sinde they grow at different spurs. Maybe mine will start growing again, even if she stopped growing when she was 5 months).

Scarlett is very pretty!  :luv:
Is there many cocker spaniels in Greece, are they popular there? Here in Norway there is quite a few, but it is not one of the most common breeds (that must be Scha¨fer, vorsteher, labrador and Golden retriever.)
This was a bit on the side I know, but just wondering :)

We have many and mostly golden color...but not from breeders:(
we only have 2-3 cocker breeders in Greece...
Comon breeds, labradors, poodles, maltese, golden, german sheperds...

I know that cockers come in all sizes , and our two are both from 'large stock' so we expect them to be on the heavier end of the scale around 17/18 kg but notwithstanding that I have decided that Gracie is a little too pudgy for her age!

She just turned 6 months old anyway and weighed in at 15kg a day or two ago, so we've decided to take her off the puppy food and put her on an adult formula and reduce the quantity that she gets also.  + I'm walking her 2 times a day instead of just once.

I really don't want her to have weight problems - Our 8 year old Bailey is on Eukanuba weight loss formula because he stacked on 3 kg recently - he was always 'free fed' but we think he started stress eating when we bought the little one home :)

Hopefully they will both be back to a more reasonable weight range in the next few months :)

Do finally cockers come in different sizes?
What about the breed standards? I know they vary a bit...but not too much I think...
I'm talking about show or breed quality dogs of course...not pet quality....
What do the judges say during judging in a show...Don't they check their size?
