arthritis?
« on: November 22, 2002, 02:51:29 AM »
I have a 7 year old cocker who in the last week has been in so much pain. He started yelping when barking and was generally a lot quieter than usual (he was walking around fine and not off his food or drink). So we took him down to the vets to be checked out. He gave him a really good check over & couldn't find anything specifically wrong at that time. He was given a painkilling injection and we were told to go back if things didn't improve. He was slightly improved over the next day then things got worse. He began hanging his head, was really withdrawn, yelping out in pain on movement (no weakness noted), off his food etc. So we promptly returned him to the vets where he had some x-rays done. They said that there were signs of some arthritic changes in his neck and would start him on some painkillers. These didn't work so after a couple of painkilling injections (rimadyl) he has been started on oral rimadyl tablets which he seems to be having some relief with (he is also on strict rest). We are currently waiting to see Andy Torrington (orthopaedic specialist). But just wanted to know whether anyone else has had any similar problems. I know the story is long winded but very worried and concerned about my best friend.

Hi Kate

Sorry to hear that your Cocker has gone down with Arthritis.

I have a friend who has a three legged dog.  He lost one of his front legs and with age he has developed Arthritis in the front leg joint.  They tried all sorts with him and then heard about the BioFlow Magnetic Collars.  He is like a new dog now he has this and they couldn't believe how quickly he improved.  I'm no expert just going on what I've seen and heard.  If you do a search through Google or something similar you will be able to find out more info on these collars.

I'm sure others will be able to give you further information as well.

Best wishes

I have heard good things about the supplement Runaround which is made by Stock Nutrition. Dogs Today did a survey on it a while ago & most dogs taking this supplement for arthritis/mobility problems showed a big improvement in their condition. You can order it here : http://www.thepetstore.net/runaroun.htm

Thank's for your replies and advice. Just thought I would update you on JOSH.  Andy has seen his x-rays and thinks that one of his spinal discs may be the underlying cause of the problem and he may need an operation. But we will find out more next Wednesdaywhen he see's him. Finger's crossed it can be sorted.

Hello, I've come back from seeing Andy Torrington the orthopaedic specialist. He was great and explained everything excellently. Josh's disc was protruding in to the spinal space and causing all the disconfort and pain. Poor Josh has been a most unhappy boy this last week the medications have helped very little and he's been in alot of pain.  He is being kept in for further test today and imaging and he is having the operation tommorrow. Fingers crossed xx that everything goes well. I will keep you updated.

Josh is back and the difference in him already is unbelievable. He is a little sore and on analgesia still but 100% happier and back to his normal self. The care he recieved from torrington orthopaedics was exeptional and highly recommended. They don't think that he will have any problems again the surgery went really well. So I am sooo happy !!!
