Names for Chocolate Roan Boy
« on: July 19, 2019, 08:25:25 PM »
I am hoping to have a Chocolate Roan (liver roan) show type puppy boy in a few weeks.I sadly lost my beautiful 11 year blue roan cocker  a month ago to renal cancer and missing him so much.We are thinking of names for our new pup and so far the short list is Forrest(my favourite),Brodie, Cody or Travis.Looking for ideas or votes.I quite like Scottish boys names or places.Any suggestions welcome.
Thanks

Welcome to COL!  All very personal, but I find the above names too American sounding.  I've always liked Finlay* for a Cocker (but Jack was the winner for my blue roan lad as it's only one syllable).  Finlay is neutral sounding (ie has no awful connotations) and has the advantage that it can be shortened to 'Fin', especially when you're shouting his name across acres of open countryside...

No doubt you'll be telling us soon that you've named him Derek

* Finlay, or Fionnlagh in Gaelic, is a name that typically implies the idea of passing on ancestral greatness.

Brodie, as defined by Wikipedia:  Brodie can be a given name or a surname of Scottish origin, and a location in Moray, Scotland, its meaning is uncertain; it is not clear if Brodie, as a word, has its origins in the Gaelic or Pictish languages. In 2012 this name was the 53rd most popular boys' name in Scotland. The given name can be a male or female name, originating from the surname.

Derek is a male name. It is the English language short form of Diederik, the Low Franconian form of the name Theodoric. Theodoric is an old Germanic name with an original meaning of "people-ruler". Which means it could be a very fitting name for a Cocker Spaniel  :lol2:

I like Finlay and Finn too but quite a few of my sons friends are called Finlay or Flynn. My good friend’s son is Angus and their cocker spaniel is called Hamish so that rules those names out.OH is not keen on Forrest at all!

Stick with Forrest. It's your favourite name and will suit a cocker spaniel well in my humble opinion!

What about Rory (Ruaridh)?
It means red haired or red haired king in Gaelic. I know chocolate roan isn't quite red, but it's not too far off  :D
