Title: Barney's Had Another Seizure!
Post by: debrand on May 08, 2005, 08:51:54 PM
:( Just about a month ago Barney had a seizure during which he bit my 16 year old son. We really hoped it was a one-off and he got back to normal very quickly afterwards. Today he was lying at my feet when I was having lunch, when he had another seizure. I can understand why he bit my son because for about ten minutes after the sizure ended he was absolutely terrified. He was very shaky and dazed and it was obvious he didn't even recognise me (and every chance he gets he is glued to me). I am taking him to the vet tomorrow to see what she says. I am devasted. I know it can be controlled by medication if it happens regularly but he is just the sweetest little dog you could have and I couldn't bear anything to happen to him- he's only 10 months.

O poor thing :(

It clearly wasn't his fault. He was ill. I hope he's better soon. I am sure the vet will be able to help sort this out. I have little experience but I know it may take a little time sorting out what caused the fit and if medication is required exactly what levels are required. Once controlled he should be able to lead a normal life in all other respects.

Sorry you 're having to go through this

Jane :)

Thank you. I had a look at the Uk site and it is excellent. It made me feel better to know that Barney is not actually suffering during the seizure. It looks so awful and you can do nothing to help him but it will help myself and my family remain calm knowing that he is not in pain. Barney's two seizures have both happened when he was lying resting which it seems is quite normal too, in fact everything that he went through was exactly how they describe it on the site. We will go see the vet tonight and will do whatever needs done to help Barney but this site has certainly made me realise that we can cope with whatever happens and give him lots of love and attention along the way!

I was at a pet blessing yesterday and the collection was for a canine epilepsy support group. The lady who spoke to us said that her dog had been diagnosed with epilepsy at a very young age and was now 4 years old and fine on medication, and that the support group had been a godsend.

We see a lot of dogs with this at the vets, and a lot of them do really well on medication. How did you get on today?

:) Thank you all for your support. Finally have time to reply. Took Barney to the vets and I think he was nearly as upset as I am because Barney is so young and such a sweet-natured dog. He took lots of blood tests to make sure that we rule out other conditions- none of which sound pleasant eg diabetes, liver disorders- I won't know the results for a few days. Then, if it turns out to be epilepsy we can discuss medication. My vet feels that if the seizures are not too frequent it might be best to put off medication for a while and just go with the seizures. He feels that Barney is such a happy, healthy dog the rest of the time, that we have to balance the number of seizures against the side-effects that we risk by medicating him. I feel he is right. I just hope it is nothing more serious than epilepsy. I am a pretty optimisic person and I feel that as long as Barney has a good quality of life for most of the time things will be ok. I have 3 teenagers, 2 dogs and 2 cats (and my mum's dog for the next two weeks) but Barney is our baby and gets so much fussing over by everyone- even one of the cats who adores him! I will let you know when I get the results.
