Humphrey was at the groomers yesterday and I've just realized, she's cut his whiskers off! Is that normal? I'm sure she didn"t do it last time and I'm a bit cross - surely they're there for a purpose? Or am I being silly?

I like the whiskers on too, yes they're there for a purpose. I believe that show ones are cut off for neatness. Sadly Dylan's get cut off when I trim him because he is so hairy he has a face like Brian Blessed. I use clippers on him which means his whiskers go, but I wish they didn't' . Your dog, your choice ;)

I trim Coco's off as I like a tidy face - it doesn't bother her at all. :luv:
I think it is personal choice. In any case, they will grow back :shades:
I would never trim a cat's whiskers though as they really need theirs ;)

I always ask for Bea's whiskers to be kept on but her Mr Biggles fluff to be trimmed off.
I believe that they are there for a reason but it is a personal choice.

Do you mean the 'beard' whiskers? Henry has a fine Emperor Ming look going on. He hates it when the groomers cut them off. He lifts and shakes his head and make a little yelling noise, especially when lowering his head to his food bowl. I read they are important sensors in the blind spot immediately below their muzzles.

It's not easy to photograph Bea at the moment but she is thankfully off to the Groomers today so it's the last chance to see the magnificent ;) Mr Biggles look .

Hopefully you can see her silver whiskers, it's basically everything behind their up to her eyes.

Humphrey doesn't have any bigglesies, his face is still quite smooth :005: Bea is beautiful! Do post a picture when she's back from the groomer, its only fair on her to show us her best shot aswell!! :005:

In a word no! Kennel Club guidelines are that whiskers should be left, unless, it's part of the breed standard to trim them - it's not part of the cocker spaniel Standard!
Pearl had hers cut at a groomers around four years ago. It was that incident (and the groomers going out of business) prompted me to go elsewhere. The new groomer used to breed and show cockers many years ago and has quite strong views on what's right ;). Whiskers are there to help the dog sense space.....they do grow back tho

Ah, I see! Can we have a pic when she has been 'de-biggled,? :005:
Dylan's face fur is so prolific itbushes out right from his nose, think he wants to be a Scottie :005: if I left his whiskers when I clip the rest of his face he would look like an Old Testament prophet :005:

Henry only has whiskers below his chin. The rest of his face is smooth. Funny how different they all are!

She should of had a trim 3 weeks ago, unfortunately she spent 3 nights at our local 5 star Hotel Vets with Pancreatitis instead >:(

Thanks Jayne, that's what I was actually thinking and am feeling even more annoyed now as this groomer only does cockers and considers herself quite an authority.!! :-\

I was of the same opinion as the majority here in that they should be left on. However, there is not a single show dog in the ring with them left on that I have seen, and a woman who works and shows her show cocker made the point that they'd have to be huge if they were still used for that purpose.
Your dog, you choice, but it is pretty much the norm in the show ring.

I'm happy to say that since I originally posted, the whiskers are starting to grow again but will definately keep them in future, although I watched a grooming video recently in which they also said it was normal to shave them off for show. HUmphrey'd never make it into the show ring in any case - he'd probably be disqualified for trying to bribe the judges with licks and presents (socks!)?anyway!! :005: :005:
