Willow's Eyes Again
« on: January 20, 2017, 09:24:19 PM »
I posted on here a while ago about Willow when she had a corneal ulcer. Her eye problems started last June and she had an eye operation last July. We really thought things had got better but the same eye started to close and water again so we took Willow to see another vet who thought it could be an
allergy, so we tried several things including hypoallergenic food. Again she seemed better for a while but not for very long.
Over the Christmas period Willow has had the bad eye half closed and the third eyelids covering most of both eyes for much of the time, looks horrible. Today the vet has diagnosed another corneal ulcer and has given her more eye drops, Chloramphenicol and Remend. She has been on various eyedrops and antibiotics almost continually since last June prescibed by two different vets but nothing has really done much to help.
We live on the IW and would have taken Willow to see a specialist vet a long time ago but I am unable to travel far because of health problems but now a specialist will hopefully be visiting the island shortly and Willow is booked in to see him.  Hopefully we may have some answers soon.
Meanwhile it is breaking our hearts seeing Willow as she is, and now she has started bumping into things and rubbing her eyes along the floor etc. I have read that eye ulcers are painful and asked the vet for a painkiller but he told us to just give her half a paracetamol. I am wondering if it is safe to do so as I believe they are toxic to animals?
I would be grateful for any advice please.

So sorry, poor Willow. Can't offer much advice I'm afaid, - my first GSD had a chronic eye condition all his life, so I do understand how nasty it is. I used to bath his eyes with camomile tea to help soothe it and keep it moist. Not sure about painkillers, I know not all human remedies are suitable but hopefully someone else will know. Sending healing thoughts and lots of  :bigarmhug:for Willow. Hope you manage to get some help for her!

Poor Willow, sounds really painful for her :'(

I hope the visiting specialist will be able to give you the answers you need and some suitable treatment for Willow. I've heard of vets recommending a low dose of paracetamol for dogs, and I'm sure yours wouldn't have done so unless he thought it would be a safe and helpful option.

I just want to thank bizzylizzy and elaine.e for your replies. Just the support means a lot at the moment. I was a bit worried as I have read that just half a 500mg paracetamol is enough to kill a cat but I think they are not so toxic to dogs, hopefully anyway.

Our vet prescribed tramadol for pain. Maybe worth asking about.

How awful and how painful!  My daughters old cocker recently had problems with his eye and it turned out to be a thorn deeply embedded.  Might be worth asking if this could be ruled out.

Thanks for the reply Patp. The vet did say that a thorn or similar may well have been the cause of the ulcer. Willow has had the orange dye which turns green, fluorescein I believe, in both eyes and been examined. I don't understand why it is affecting both eyes so badly. Can't wait till tomorrow to find out if the eye drops are helping the eye to heal, or not. I have a bad feeling as it's been going on too long now.
