Title: Canon Digital Compact Camera. Any good?
Post by: happydog on November 04, 2007, 05:57:03 PM
Canon Digital Compact Camera - PowerShot A570 IS
I'm thinking of buying this camera. I want a fairly good quality one for action shots (a turbo charged Fern and wildlife) and crystal clear close ups (to sell squillions of stuff on EBay as I am due a major clear out). I was given a ViviCam 3105s (3.2 megapixel) for Christmas last year for my first ever digital camera and it is dreadful. Any attempt at action shots produces a blur, jumpy videos and all shots are grey and grainy >:( .

Is this the right sort of thing I should be looking for? Has anyone got this model, if so how do you find it? Is it easy to use? Any drawbacks to using it? Do you have any shots you could post so I can see how good/bad it is?

All comments welcome as I am a complete numpty when it comes to cameras and really could do with some help here. Thanks  guys :D

No advice I'm afraid but I will be watching this thread with interest as I have finally accepted that I need to embrace the digital age  ::)  The Powershot is one I was thinking of too as I don't want to go too bonkers pricewise. That looks a good price too  ;)

I'm watching this too!  Ideally I'd love an SLR but they're too big and I know I wouldn't take it everywhere!

I've seen this for about £155 http://www.samsungcamera.co.uk/product/pro_view.asp?prol_uid=3991&cat_uid=75 (http://www.samsungcamera.co.uk/product/pro_view.asp?prol_uid=3991&cat_uid=75)

What do you think?  It has more megapixels which I presume is good  ::)  And it takes action shots.  I'm a bit of a numpty too but would love to have clear pics  ;)

Excellent - the reviews look good.  Have to admit I haven't a clue what some of it means but it sounds like a good buy to me - I am very tempted and that is a really good price!  ;)

I have one of the previous generation to this one which I bought about 4 years ago (Powershot A85 which is only 4mps) and despite the fact it's now finally in pieces (THANKS SON!!!!!!!!), it has been VERY robust and taken some great photo's. I'm thinking about getting the one you've just ordered too so keep us posted!

I've just bought the Canon IXUS 950IS.  Found it very stable (image stabiliser built in), has a kids&pets setting (so already set up takings shots of manic crazy moments  :005: ) plus loads of other settings, low light levels, night shots, foliage, beach, snow etc!

So far so good. Any pics I've posted recently have been taken with it...I took this one this morning, hope it helps ( http://s193.photobucket.com/albums/z295/jb1200/?action=view&current=IMG_0689.jpg (http://s193.photobucket.com/albums/z295/jb1200/?action=view&current=IMG_0689.jpg) )

Ohh, thanks Montymoo, I've been looking at sites that show 'test pictures' from the cameras i'm looking at but none of them seems to be Cockers! :shades:
Have you found your camera good for taking 'action' and close up portrait shots?

I have just hoofed out our Canon for the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3.  Lovely camera for a small thing, has settings for all occasions (if you remember to change it ph34r) and head and shoulders above the Canon we had but can't remember which it was as OH has taken it to work.  I love the big viewing screen in particular.

The only thing I have found with taking action shots is you need to change the setting or get the focus right!  My only crime has been not reading the manual or not changing the setting!!  The camera takes amazing shots regardless of whether they are close up portrait or distance shots so long as you change the setting!! (which is very easy to do) :005: Image stabiliser on the camera is excellent as you don't get shaky-hand syndrome!

Have you looked at:  http://www.cameras.co.uk/camera-reviews/photos.cfm?photo=canon-ixus-950-is&title=Canon%20IXUS%20950%20IS (http://www.cameras.co.uk/camera-reviews/photos.cfm?photo=canon-ixus-950-is&title=Canon%20IXUS%20950%20IS) It has test shots for most cameras!! (it's on the IXUS950IS at the moment just need to click on reviews and it'll bring up the full list with THEIR score out of 100 for it.  All test shots are all taken of the same subjects so you can compare the cameras alongside one another.

Good luck x

There are lots of camera review websites which is how I chose my camera.  Just type camera review into google ;)

I have recently bought the Finepix F31fd and am very pleased with it.  Here's my camera and I find this review site excellent:

I need a new compact as I can't carry the SLR out on shoots as it's too big and bulky and this one is probably the one I will go for.

Do you mean an A720 or the PowerShot A570 IS ?

That is a lovely camera but a bit out of my 'present to myself' range!  I'm looking at the £150 mark so what is the best buy in the easy digital market?  I'd love an SLR but know that I wouldn't take it every where - so I need a decent compact camera that produces professional results (not asking much then  :005: )

If you could stretch to £190 I'd go for this one as this really is a fab range of cameras...

Or if not then I've used this one and it's good too...

I'm no good with looking at the spec of cameras, but is the same model as Nic posted?  Its a lil bit cheaper, found it via Price Runner ;)

That looks great and the price is OK (ish) too!  I read on the review that the memory card supplied only stores about 11 pics?  Did you get a larger card too?

Can't wait to see the photos - I may be off to the site that Magic Star posted  ;)

I nearly ordered this last night but as I'd comsumed a glass of wine or two I thought I'd better leave it as I have a terrible habit of spending money that I can't afford  ::)

So I just sat here again with a nice cup of tea and ordered it anyway  :005:  Still can't really afford it - can't say I need it - I just really want it!

Hopefully I'll be taking good pics soon!

I've just got the Fuji Finepix F31fd and I'm learning how to use it  ph34r  which will probably take some time....but I'm very happy with the snaps I've taken so far and I really like the look and feel of the camera - before I had a Canon ixus 11 a tiny stainless steel thing and was quite disappointed with it especially as it just stopped working................ >:D

I tidied up your posts Clarey-doll ;)

As for the camera. If you'd only had it for a week then you should have been offered a replacement or a refund. Sending it back is not an option!! After 28 days iirc then they have the right of trying repair, but you have not been sold something fit for purpose from the off. They've pulled one over on you chuck! I'd go back and demand a replacement or your money back. You should not be without like this for something so wrong so soon.

I agree with Pam.  Go ask for your money.  I know you thought it might be sand that stopped the lens going back but my lens was jammed with sand after the Aberdeenshire meet and it was fine after I blew on it ph34r  I am very technical like that :005:

Thanks for your advise folks ;)

but the camera was purchased in July and i bought it from a colleague a work ph34r

she had used it once on holiday but didnt like the view finder (shes old school likes the small eye finder) :shades:

and i worked perfectly thought it was sand but tried the blowing on ,hairdrier trick didnt work ph34r

The shop did mention they would have given me another one but they didnt have one in stock >:(

what should i do?

should i go back to the shop and demand a replacement?

Either that or your money back?

As you bought it second hand from a friend - not sure where you stand on that one?  I do think that you deserve a refund though but maybe your friend will have to take it back for you rather than you demanding a refund from her  ;)

Sorry to re-waken an old thread but my new camara has arrived!  It looks great and the reviews are great  ;)  But I may take a couple of weeks off trying to get to know it  :shades:

I bought the Panasonic DMC TZ3 and it should be a fab camara but I'm a little bogged down with the manual  ::)  Be prepared for lots of test posts and questions  ;)

I have just bought a Fujifinepix S5700.  It's great little camera and has a 10X optical zoom lens.  Fuji have introduced a newer model and these are being sold off quite cheaply.  The only difference between the two is the 5700 is 7.1 Megapixels and the 5800 is 8 Megapixels.  The difference is negligible.  I bought this as I have a Canon EOS digital that's a bit too cumbersome to carry around on walks etc.

You can see the quality of the pics from the Fuji on some of my recent posts.  I bought mine from Dabs for £120, but I see that Tesco are selling it for £129.99.  Not much more expensive when you take postage into account, and you get points from Tesco.
