Title: Credelio flea treatment
Post by: 77marie on September 12, 2018, 11:24:00 AM
Hi there,
Just a quick question please! Our vet gave us Milbemax for worming and Credelio for fleas and ticks for Goldie. I wanted to ask - should I give her the Credelio at all? She does not have fleas and I think the risk of getting them is quite low... I do not want to give her chemicals and drugs unless necessary...
I think the Milbemax is important because she was only wormed once by the breeder at 7 weeks... vet let us wait till almost 12 weeks with another round (she had Drontal with her breeder).

Thanks a lot in advance for any thoughts!

You could just take pooh samples over 3 days and have the vet check for worms, if there are no worms present you don?t need to de-worm. The worming treatment isn?t preventative anyway but if you have a pooh test done regularly you?re on the safe side without adminstering chemicals unnecessarily.
I add a little dessicated coconut to Humphrey?s raw diet, (you can also use try garlic, raw grated carrot, ground pumkin seeds, there are lots of natural things you can add which parasites aren?t very fond of) and since he?s been on a raw diet we?ve had no problems with worms or digestive tract parasites at all.
The decision re parasite treatment is, as you can read in a lot of threads on here, a very personal one and everyone has to make their own minds up regarding the risks but it is my personal opinion that the risks from the treatments are a lot higher than most vets will admit to so I only use them if absolutely necessary.

Thank you so much.
I will probably leave the flea treatment because she clearly has no fleas.
I will speak to the vet about the worming and whether they would be able to test her poo instead. I heard about coconut and stuff, I need to do more in depth research myself, thanks a lot for the ideas!
All the best and thanks again,

Does what it says on the tin!  :005:  Definitely worth considering.

Ollie was a rescue at 7 mths, while we took him to our vet the next day the vet naturally suggested wormer and flea treatment.  We bathed him the night he came home as so dirty and just used a flea shampoo and saw nothing, but when we wormed him....wow, wont go into details - I popped into the vets and it was suggested that he may not have been wormed correctly as a pup, so we did it sooner rather than later.

So whether worm count or wormer I would keep on top of it whilst he is still a pup

I am another advocat for if there is nothing to treat then dont!  I now do annual worm counts (they were done twice yearly as a pup).  As already said the wormers will only work if there are worms present and they wear off very quickly.  I also dont believe in overusing anything chemical, internally or externally, on my girl and have only recently got her immune system back to where it should be after a Lepto vaccination 3 years ago!

Hi, thank you!
The worm count sounds wonderful!
I will ask the vet about it just to see what she says.
I will definitely refuse further flea tablets because I believe they are  not necessary.
I might use the wormer for now simply because likely Goldie did have worms when she was little (first wormed just before we got her at 8 weeks and her poo was really bad with bits in it and her tummy was all swollen). And she goes out and off the leash a lot. But I will definitely read through the worm count and send a sample to see. Thank you so much. I am glad there are options to keep on top of stuff and still not to give her chemicals and drugs as ?prophylaxis?.
Thanks! Mx

I am not saying your vet will be the same as others, but vets main source of income is from flea, wormers and vaccinations so they will never (in my experience) agree with anything other than what they are offering regardless of the risks involved.   >:D

Just remember your vet works for you and therefore should respect your decisions.

Wormcount is done direct with the company and the report, if it shows up any issues, can be shown to your vet for the correct treatment if needed.

One think I would recommend is making sure your pup is protected against Lung Worm,

Thank you,
Yes I do expect the vet to dismiss poo testing and tell me I need the tablets.
Just as they usually frown upon raw feeding...:-/
And I am really glad the Wormcount company offers screening for lungworm as wel!

The only thing why I think I will get the next dose of wormer and do the wormcount later (before the November dose is due) is that Goldie still has poo accidents at home overnight and we have a little daughter who is 3.5 so I just want to be extra safe.
But I am really so glad you guys recommended me the wormcount company! Because I was thinking what am I going to do if the vet refuses to test the poo?:-)

But I will definitely refuse any further Credelio flea treatment.
We have two cats who go out unsupervised and they get Advocate drops behind their neck twice a year for worming and no other treatment, but never get fleas or ticks,
so I believe the risk Goldie would get fleas is minimal...

Thank you all so much!

I only use flea treatments if I actually see fleas, so if you are vigilant, you probably won't need to.  I live in the sticks and still have hardly ever had to treat Coco for fleas, so that is a lot of chemicals that she would have had unnecessarily.  Your vet might not like it, but it is your decision!  ;)

Also be aware that some dog flea treatments can have an adverse effect on cats!

Thank you!
Yes I am a bit worried what the vet will say if I refuse the Credelio... We are going there next Friday so I will see:-)
