Poor Bella has one. Noticed on Friday, one of her ears was sticking out, took her to the vets had it aspirated, 30mls blood stained fluid, has antibiotics and steroids. It's slowly filled up again so looking like another trip tomorrow. Vet thinks she might have to have operation.
She's fine in herself, usual Bella, trying to stop her investigating things and ear flapping is hard though.
Really saddens me when one of my dogs is poorly
-
Awwww poor Bella :luv: really hope she doesn't have to have an OP sending healing thoughts for her :luv: x x x
-
Awwww....big hugs for you and Bella xx
-
Poor Bella. I hope her ear gets better quickly. :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: to both of you.
-
I'd try for a second drain If I were you, Dyllan had the same but was fine after the second drain :D
Vets said he needed the op but I begged for a second drain to avoid the pain of the op.
-
Oh that sounds nasty :016:
Poor Bella :luv:
All the best for a swift resolution!

Although you can't tell properly the haematoma is the size and feels like a hard boiled egg
-
Aww bless, it makes her look extra cute. The poor little mite looks a little sorry for herself on the first photo.
P.S. Bella, make sure your mammy gives you lots of extra attention.
-
Aw,love her.She looks so sorry for herself in the first pic :luv:
Hope a second draining sorts Bella out, keep us posted. :D
-
It's been drained again, she's so good at the vets and she loves going :luv:
Just hoping it doesn't refill.
-
Do you know how it happened?
Just curiousnosey
-
Either through flapping her ears or scratching.
She does like a good flap of her ears though
-
Aww, poor Bella. Paws crossed that the second drain does the trick. :luv:

Bless her, good girl Bella.Ruby would be a right wuss :005:
Fingers crossed this does the trick ;)

No it hasn't happened again was a good while back two years or more.
After then second drain it filled a little then went down again
-
Poor Bella, hope the second drain works and her poorly ear gets better very soon.
-
Really hope the drain works. Poor Josie had this last summer. 2 drains and still came straight up the next day - it was horrible. She had surgery and was in a buster collar for ages. Finally took the stitches out and within days it came back so she had to have the operation all over again. (Don't want to worry you - just warning you it could happen)
This time they left the buster collar on and stitches in even longer (it seemed to us as if she had the collar and stitches for ages!!!) She hated the buster collar and never got used to it. We borrowed a soft collar which was slightly better but she still hated it.
Eventually took the stitches out and (touch wood) she has been fine ever since.
Hope it goes ok for Bella.
-
Oh poor Bella, and poor you. It is just awful when you can't wave a magic wand and make horrible things go away for them.
Keeping paws and fingers crossed here for a good result this time, avoiding the op.
Xx

Poor Rosie. Glad it's all sorted now.
Thanks for writing this, it never occurred to me that surgery might not work. It's always good to have knowlege and be prepared.
Fingers crossed it doesn't refill, just had a look and it's ok so far.

Sorry - but i'm very ignorant ph34r when it comes to this sort of thing - what on earth causes it, and why does it keep filling up?

From what I understand its most likely from flapping her ears or scratching, the capillaries in ear burst and bleed and generally they get a haematoma. Bellas was the size of a boiled egg. She's had it drained twice now and on antibiotics and steroids. It was drained yesterday so was flat but some fluid has recollected today.
She's not bothered by it.
But if left they get 'cauliflower ear' like rugby players get

Good grief!!! I think I'm going to have to stop reading the Health bit in COL - there are all these horrible afflictions that I've never heard of to worry about! I worry about Ozzy enough as it is!! Hope Bella is more comfortable soon and that she doesn't need to have the op. :luv:
-
Come home to a stuck out ear again, its refilled, same size. Vets tomorrow :-(

Booked in for op on Thursday :-(
Thinking of Bella.
We never looked back after Lily's ear surgery. She suffered so much before the op, and all she had to endure afterwards was a bit of hearing loss.
Wishing Bella a speedy recovery, and to be comfortable once again. Xx

Aww Poor Bella :(

Poor Bella :'( :'( big :bigarmhug: :bigarmhug: for you both

Poor Bella, :bigarmhug: to you both.
-
Thanks everyone,
Bellas fine completely unfazed by it all, I'm dreading it though.
We've been told she'll have to have a lampshade for 2weeks, we're supposed to be away too. Not sure how you do beach walks with a active dog wearing a lampshade
-
how about a comfy cone or a comfy collor or kong cloud collar? Not sure if the comfy collar or kong cloud would stop her scratching but the comfy cone may?
Bless her :luv:
-
Haematoma was drained 4 times in the end still full again when I took her to the vets this morning.
Anyway, shes having her op, im waiting for the vets to ring me :-(
I bought a comfy cone for night time. I also bought a snood off eBay thought it might help keep sand out of her ears, don't think she's going to like it though
-
Fingers crossed that everything goes well today and sorts the problem out for good :bigarmhug:
I bought a comfy cone for William last year when he had his eyelid/eyelash surgery and it was so much better than the plastic cone given out by the vet. I removed a couple of the stiffeners and turned the cone back on itself a bit under his chin so that he could eat, drink and sleep more comfortably. The only downside was that he discovered he could use it on walks to shovel up even larger than usual quantities of horse poo to snack on :005:. Luckily, the comfy cone is easy to clean.
-
Charlie has a snood, He doesn't like it, but if you push it off his head ( I've more like around his neck like a scarf, he's ok with it).
Not long now until she's home :)
-
Hope everything went well today for Bella.x
-
Bella had her op yesterday, didn't pick her up until 6.30pm sge was in a bit of a sorry state, she slept with me last night needless to say didn't get much sleep. She's better today her lively self apart from her lampshade and she's not allowed any walks until tomorrow
Can't really see but the insides a bit if a mess, its an open wound to allow drainage

:cool4: yay Bellas poo'd, 2 days without a poo, just taken her for a little walk, her first since the op, she was really reluctant which is unlike her and didn't enjoy it much, so despite advice let her off lead, she only went a couple of yards ahead and found herself some smelly grass and pooped, so pleased. Back on lead and home.
For some reason they've shaved her neck and the lampshade and collar are rubbing on it so spent the afternoon making a fleece collar which she's now wearing.
Been for check up today, alls looking well
-
That sounds a lot better, glad she has been able to 'go'! Good idea with the fleece collar, lucky you are handy, I am hopeless! Cuddles for Bella :luv:
-
Hope poor little Bella is feeling better soon.
-
Poor Bella. Hope her poorly ear heals very quickly and she has no more problems with it.
-
Well what a two weeks, we went up to Northumberland for a week, not the best week we've had, first few dats Bella was generally not very well, if it wasn't for the fact we'd both had a drink on Tuesday evening we'd of come home, as it was Bella was a bit brighter next day so we stayed.
Generally though it was a sunny week and she struggled with the heat, the lampshade was a bit like having her head in a greenhouse. She refused to walk I had to pick her up, refused to go even for wee's again I had to carry her. The week did get better but we did come home earlier than intended.
This week she's liked being in the garden and on walks tried to play but hindered by the lampshade. As she's got better the lampshade has become a lethal weapon I'm surprised its still intact.
Been vets today, ear quite thick compared to other one and her wound is still weeping, stitches are out, but told wound could possibly split open, on prednisalone for another two weeks, lampshade to stay on at least another week.
She stinks, needs a good scrub, hair on side of face hard and crusty, we tried cleaning but she was ear flapping, etc which we don't want so stopped doing it.
Anyway fingers crossed that this ear heals and doesn't split
-
Hope that Bella is back to normal soon, I am the same, I would rather be ill than seeing of mine suffering
-
Poor little Bella :bigarmhug: hope she is all better real soon :-*
-
Aww Bella, I hope your ear improves soon :luv:
