We are both very tired this morning, we had a great walk in the forest yesterday but on the way back Teal started to act very strangely biting and eating at every bit of vegetation she could, I had to put her on her lead and she still pulled to try and eat anything she could. Put her in the back of the car and set of home on arrival we found that she had chewed and swallowed 10 inches of nylon strap on the camera case. At the vets within the hour the vet had no idea what had happened and did not wish to induce vomiting in case it did more harm than good. So after a jab to try to ease Teals nausea we took her home the emergency vet was briefed and was ready in case things deteriorated . Teal kept swallowing and licking the floor and we had to put her on lead in the garden to stop her eating every plant out there. Sue and I think she may have swallowed something sharp whilst diving in and out of a flooded ditch and was trying to shift it by self medicating. We fed her some chicken nothing wrong with her appetite So we were on Teal watch all night. This morning the swallowing has eased some and she has had a poo with what looks like some small bits of camera strap in it, Fingers crossed she had chewed the strap well and not swallowed the thing whole and what we think was in her throat has now shifted or was just a bad scratch. Will be back to the vets on monday to have her checked again.

O'h good gracious! Poor Teal (poor you!) Really hope she has indeed chewed it into small pieces and that it will all pass through without causing any problems. They certainly do like to keep us on our toes! You'll have to collect all the bits together as they come out now and hope you get the full ten inches!! ;).
Good luck, fingers crossed and :bigarmhug: to Teal! - keep us posted!

The vet phoned at 2am this morning to let us know she had finished the op, She had to go into the small intestine twice and also the stomach. She removed a length of camera strap and lots of vegetation plus sweet wrappers and bits of plastic. There was no damage to the intestine due to our prompt action in getting her to the vets.
We still do not know what caused Teal to go on her manic rubbish eating spree, the vet seems to agree it was something she swallowed that started all this her throat is inflamed but the vet does not know the cause.
Vets phoned this morning to say Teal was up and has had a wee but was a bit grumpy they will update us later today, we may be able to collect her this evening but there is a good chance it will be tomorrow if this is the case we can visit this afternoon which we will refuse I don't want Teal to see us and not be able to bring her home.
Thank you all for your support and best wishes it does help to share with like minded folks, Sue and I have had very little sleep but so relieved the op went well.
-
SO glad to hear Teal through the op and hopefully she will be on the mend soon. My Fred had something similar so I can understand some of the fear and wirry you have been going trough. BE kind to yourselves and extra special hugs for teal x x x
-
O'h thank goodness! I've been thinking about you all morning! Thank heavens you reacted promptly, it sounds as if it could have become pretty serious otherwise. Hope you can get some rest now knowing that Teal's ok and being well looked after, no doubt she'll be up and about and keeping you on your toes again before long!
More :bigarmhug: for Teal and wishing her a speedy recovery!

What a scary day, hope Teal heals quickly and well. Xx
-
Any news Jeff? Hope Miss Teal is much better x
-
We were called into the vets this morning as Teal was not doing so good, stressing and not eating they asked us to take her home for a few hours and see if we could gether to eat, a boiled chicken breast did the trick. Took her back this evening for another scan then brought her home again for the night she has not moved of her bed but is alert and doesnt seem to be stressing. Vet said not out of the woods yet and we will be taking her back for another scan in the morning.
Me and Sue are emotionally wiped out, I know we were attached to the devil dog even more than previous pups but didn't realise how much, I put it down to old age and not having kids in the house
-
Ah, sorry to hear progress has been slow. It sounds like she's much happier at home that at the vets and who can blame her? Sending hugs to both canine and humans.
-
Memories of #sweetcorngate1 have come flooding back - these pups really know how to worry us! Hope tomorrow brings better news x
-
So many if us in here are pulling for Teal and you both, Jeff. She's been through quite an ordeal but being at home with you will relax her so she can concentrate on getting better. She sounds like a feisty little madam, she'll battle her way through this and the fact that she's eating is always a positive sign.
Look after youselves and give Teal a great big :bigarmhug: from Humphrey and us (even OH keeps asking if there's any more news!)
Keeping everything crossed!

Well after a night of no sleep for me and plenty for Teal she is brighter this morning we have just returned from the vets where Teal had another scan which was pronounced good, her temp is back to normal and as I type this Devil dog is laying on her bed barking at some imagined villain in her street. We don't have to go back to the vets until Saturday. Now I have to do the impossible and keep her from running climbing and jumping for a few weeks.
Thank you all for your support it really helps to talk to folks who understand how attached we are to our pups.
-
Great news Jeff :D
I'm sure you are so relieved ...
good luck with keeping Miss Teal :luv: quiet :shades:
-
Phew!!! Thats brilliant news!! :clapping: : :clapping: am so pleased for you! I don't know what your view is on homeopathic treaments, I realize its not everyone's cup of tea, but we gave our previous dog Arnica immediately after a huge op that he had and even our vet was surprised at the speed he picked up.
Lots of good wishes from us all here and hope, (probably in vain ;) ) that Teal's learned a lesson!!!
More :bigarmhug: for the little lady!

Good girl Teal, get well poppet. x

So glad Teal is on the mend. We had a Border Collie who did the same as Teal on more than one occasion. She would eat everything in sight. Leaves, sticks, paper, fluff etc etc. It. Seemed like she was trying to clear something in her throat. She would cough and gag.Luckily no surgery was needed but we learned to tie her up when it happened until the episode was over. Sometimes it would go on for hours and was distressing.
I'm glad to say she lived a long happy life despite this.
Good luck to Teal. Speedy recovery.
-
I don't know how I have missed this. I'm so sorry you and Teal had to go through such a terrible time and so happy that she seems to be on the mend.
Good luck trying to keep her quiet, I don't envy you that.

If I ever see her as much look at vegetation again I will sellotape her mouth shut :D.
She had her Metacam lunchtime yesterday and within the hour Teal decided a few things, she was starving, better, and it was time to play first she brought me tuggy rope then when I refused to play she picked up her kong and repeatedly throwing it at me. I had forgot how difficult it is to keep her settled and calm, I am sure she is doing everything she can to panic me.

One of mine does this - usually when he's pulled burdock seed cases out of his feathers. I think the hooky bits stick in their throats. It's a bit alarming, and when he first did it I rushed off the emergency vet (who then said there was nothing they would do as the dog could breathe fine). By morning he was fine. Anyway, now I just make sure that after every walk, all the dogs are checked for any seeds/ sticky buds and I remove them. Not to say I always get them out before he does. sometimes i'll give him a bit of toast - that's helped on occasion. Otherwise he is normally sick and that seems to dislodge whatever is causing the irritation.

so glad she's on the mend!!

Gosh only just catching up. What an ordeal for Teal and you all as well. Glad she's on the mend now :luv: :luv:
