My poor little Parkety is undergoing major spine surgery as I type this :'(
Further to my post regarding him having a slipped disc, our vet referred him to a specialist and we had an appointment there this morning. He confirmed that Parker has a problem between the vertebrate at the top of his neck, whereby the gooey stuff in the middle (technical term that!) is leaking out and putting pressure on the spinal cord.
So, he is undergoing an operation known as 'Fenestration' when they make holes in the bottom of the vertebrate to allow the gooey stuff to seep out the bottom where it does no harm, rather than the top where it puts pressure on the spinal cord.
He will be in hospital until at least Wednesday.
Keep all your fingers and toes crossed for him, please :'( :'(
-
Fingers, toes and paws crossed.
Hope Parker is feeling a lot better after his 'procedure'. Please keep us updated with his progress.
Lots of cocker hugs from Mollie & Daisy :luv:
-
Oh poor lad. :'(
It must be a very worrying time for you. I hope everything goes well during the operation and that he'll soon be back home with you, though Wednesday seems an age away I bet. :-\
My three pooches are sending you and Parker hugs and sloppy kisses. :-*
Keep us up to date on his progress.
-

-
Thank you all for your thoughts and wishes - I'll let him know everyone is thinking about him!
I've just spoken to the vet and he has come through the operation well and will be able to come home on Wednesday. She warned that he will get worse before he gets better because there will be massive amounts of swelling etc. But, he will be so much happier as the pain (which must have been constant, yet he seldom grumbled, bless him) will be gone for good
I just want to get him home now! They said they will ring tomorrow and let me know how he's getting on, so I'll keep everyone posted.
-

Dollop, what's wrong with Dolly?? I do hope she's ok.
I'll let you all know how he's doing when he gets home.

I know two dogs that have had this surgery and been fine afterwards. As soon as you can though, get him to hydrotherapy - it helps tremendously....
-

Dollop, what's wrong with Dolly?? I do hope she's ok
Nothing serious ( at least to our knowledge at the moment) more unexpected and a little odd. I posted about it further down, under "mysterious lump". She's feeling very sorry for herself, and still sore, but otherwise fine, thanks.
Again, hoping he recovers quickly from his ordeal.
-
Any news on Parker, hope he is being spoilt rotten :005: :luv: :luv:
-
Glad Parkers coming home :luv: :luv: and sending him lots of (((hugs))) and cocker kisses :-* :-* :-* for a speedy recovery
-
The little man is home and currently in his usual place on the sofa!!! :D :005: ::)
Apparently he was in surgery for just over 2 1/2 hours - quite a massive op. He's got ain insicion in his throat about 6 - 8" long with about 25 - 30 stitiches which will come out in 2 weeks. He has to return to the speciaist in 4 weeks.
In himself he is remarkably bright! He's dosed up to the eyeballs with painkillers but it's just so lovely to have him home.
The recovery powers of dogs never cease to amaze me - if that had been us having such major surgery we'd be flat on our backs for weeks!!
-
So glad he is home. What a relief for you. Have you got the impossible task of keeping him still now? Good luck with that if you have cockers and still not two words you would normally find in the same sentence :005: Hugs to you and Parker.
-
Gentle hugs to Parker, and best wishes for you as you nurse him through this!
-
Yes Debs, he is not supposed to jump and he is supposed to be as still as possible...... Do vets know what cockers are like!!!!! ::)
It's just so, so marvellous to have him home and to know that he is going to be a new, painfree doggie in future.
I cannot thank you enough for all your lovely wishes and thoughts - it's been a real treat while he was in hospital to come on here and see all your lovely messages.
Thank you from me and most of all, from Parker!!
-
Glad to hear he is home - sounds like quite an op :o Hope his recovery is a swift one :-*
-
How is Parker this morning ?
Hope that both of you had a good nights sleep.
Now's your hardest task, keeping him *rested* ph34r for the day :005: :005: good luck
-
Just wondering how he has been overnight, and how he is this morning.
-
Morning all!
Parker had a very settled night and slept really well and he is as bright as a button this morning!
I am SO amazed at him, but it's a nightmare trying to keep him reasonably still! He's on massive doses of painkillers for the next 2 weeks so I think they are playing a big part but he's in really chipper form!
I'll try and take some pics of him later to post for you all to see. :D
-
Glad to hear he sounds perky and happy. :luv: Good luck trying to get a cocker to stay still though! :005:
-
As promised, pics of Parkety's wounds...

Poor fella, glad he's doing well :D
-
Sorry, I've not been around for a couple of days, so I've only just caught up with this.
I'm so pleased that Parker is home with you safe and sound. :luv: That certainly a big incision ph34r poor boy.
I certainly don't envy you the task of keeping him still though, not sure I'd ever be able to keep Barney still. ::)
-
Hi all,
Just a little update about Parkety.
He had the stitches out yesterday and the vet was very pleased with how the wound has healed. (It's amazing actually, it's almost invisible already!) His painkiller dose is now much reduced and I'm pleased to report that he is still doing really well. I was a little worried that when the pain killers reduced he might struggle a bit but no, he's still as mad as ever! ::)
He goes back to the specialist in 2 weeks time when I hope he will receive the all-clear and be signed off!
-
That is good news :D Glad Parker :luv: is recovering well and I'm sure he will get the all clear....
-
Great to hear the good news.
It must be all those cocker cuddles and kisses that hae made him heal quickly :-*
Hope he continues to improve and look forward to an update soon.
Lots of :luv:
-
You're right Neville, he's had enough hugs and kisses from you lot to cure any ailments he may have for the rest of his life!! :luv:
He (and I!) rae very grateful to you all!
-
Well done Parker! Hope he enjoys a pain-free future.

Good news folks........ Parker went back to the specialist who has given him the all clear!!!! :D  :D
He said that Parker looked 5 years younger than when he first saw him and that he should have no more problems with his neck at all.
I'm so pleased, and Parker is a truly happy little dog again!
