I noticed this on Charlie's back a couple of days ago, sorry picture is blurred aint easy holding a wriggly bundle and taking a picture at the same time. It has grown a bit over the last couple of days. Should I go to the vets tomorrow or is this harmless and will it fall off it does seem loose but is definitely attached to his skin.
Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks
cathy with charlie.

I'm pretty sure by the colour that what Charlie has on his back is a tick. It has grown quite a bit in the last few days as it is now engorged with blood.. Do NOT put meths on it or squeeze it, or it will regurgitate it's stomach contents back into Charlie and they can carry Lymes disease. You need to remove it properly. Do you know how and do you have an O'Tom tick remover?
-
Could it be a tick? Do you know how to remove them if it is? If it's not a tick then I would definitely go the vets if I were you, just to make sure it's nothing to worry about.
-
Posted at same time as Happydog! :D
-
Sorry neither of my 2 have ever had a tick so I dont know how to remove it. It is kind of cigar shaped. He was in the rough on the golf course a couple of days ago with OH finding golf balls.

is charlie on frontline? i looks a similar colour to the ones that have been on Quincy that have been dead when ive removed them, if its still alive it will be very dark grey/purple in colour and it will just drop off when its full? be careful though if you do pull it out yourself as it may leave the head in or as others have said squeeze the nastiness into him x
-
It seems to be pink in colour and no he isnt on any for ticks although he will be tomorrow when I take him to the vet, as he goes to the golf course at least twice a week with OH.
Cathy
-
mm that sounds odd, cant say ive seen a pink tick? can you get a better pic maybe get some one to hold the little b***** still for a second? might be a wart or something?
-
I would pop to the vets and let them remove it if it is your first tick. They will be able to show you how to twist it off in order that the mouthparts are not left in. It won't hurt to leave it until tomorrow as it has been attached for a couple of days it will be well and truly attached. He probably picked it up from the long grass, hedgehogs are the most likely culprit.
If you want info here is a good site. There is a video that shows you how to remove them-folow the link from this page.

You can buy the removal tools here. They are only about three pounds and worth keeping in the cupboard.

Thanks all we will be off to the vet tomorrow and I have ordered one of the tick removal tools as well to keep handy I will know better next time.
Thanks
Cathy
-
Tick was my first thought when I saw the first pics too
Don't be surprised if it's not on him tomorrow as it looks big enough to fall out on it's own - sorry you may not have wanted to hear that but think you need to be made aware :D
-
That's a bit of a thought! ph34r Maybe you'd be better seeing if any of your dog owner friends have removed ticks and get them to take it out for you today!
-
me three x
-
What ever it is is still there so am phoning the vet at 9am to get seen today and I have ordered a tick removal tool as well.
Thanks all for your help and info I wont get caught this way again.
Cathy
-
just to let you know I removed a 'half-full' tick from Jarv's ear this morning (uggghhhhhhh) and it was pink-ish coloured.
once you do remove them a couple of times (with the O-tom) you actually strangely get used to it ph34r
-
Thanks just a bit worried as he is not his usual bouncy self this morning so whether this falls off or not we are still off to the vet. He is 9 y/o and walks the golf course at least twice a week and this has never happened before. Charlie never does things easy first with pancreatitis then IVDD so we usually pay attention when he seems off colour. I am so glad I took that piccie yesterday and didnt just assume it was a cyst as he is a senior now.

we keep the o-tom's in the car now Caroline, so if you want to do a tick-eviction post our fritham walk I can offer my services :005:
tiamaria - it's a bumper tick season, if you can avoid getting a tick this year in any area of the UK I'd be really surprised ::) Hope you've got your O-tom ready and waiting ;)
-
Removing the first couple is the worst then you do get used to it. Gari got one last week despite having being Frontline Combo'd and I was repulsed and had to get OH to do it. ::)
Did you get an appointment for him?

I'm touching wood - as so far not found any :D (you watch I'll be posting later this week that I've found some now ::) )

Hi all just got back from the vet and Charlie is now tickless the vet having removed the horrible thing which was still living and reckoned that it hadnt attached properly. So one antibiotic injection later and a 3 month supply of frontline we are sorted, just need the removal tool to arrive I ordered yesterday to arrive.
Never having seen a tick before I am so thankfull you guys are here, and so is Charlie
You are all wonderfull
Cathy and Charlie.
-
Charlie is very lucky to have got to 9 y/o without ever having a tick ::)
-
Guys I was doing a yahoo to price frontline and I see you need a prescription, I paid £22 for a pack of 3 and could buy this online 3 months for £17 well that £5 would be usefull elsewhere. Do you guys get a prescription from the vet and buy online or is that a bit of a hassle which would upset the vets who have to give you a prescription and do they still have to give the prescription free of charge, just doing a bit of forward planning. Which months of the year do you need to use this.
Cathy
-
Glad he's now tickless ;)
This thread may give you some answers :-\

Thanks this has answered all my questions I will order the ordinary Frontline which doesnt need a prescription and can get 6 months for what I just paid the vet for 3 of the combo, every little helps
Cathy.
-
Just so you know, Frontline, won't actually prevent the ticks from attaching to him, just in case you get a shock if you find another :D
Glad hes ok, ticks are VILE >:(
-
I know OH is at the ready to squash the next one we find after having removed it of course. :lol2:

urgh i would stand well clear if hes gonna do that! it might splurt on you!!!!
-
I think he plans to put the bug into a poly bag and squash it. Not in front of me of course I aint got the stomach for that,
Cathy

Glad Charlie is now tickless! OH flushes them down the loo, as as much as I hate ticks, I can't kill anything! :005:
PS, don't worry about upsetting your vet by asking for a prescription if you want Combo, they have to give it to you and fully understand that somepeople want to order online. :D
-

Just for the record:
Disposing of ticks
To dispose of a tick, drop it into alcohol to kill it, then dispose of it. Flushing them down the toilet will not kill them. Squishing them with a thumbnail is not recommended. If you have been bitten, then save the tick in a jar of alcohol for identification, to help decide whether possible infection has occurred

I'm sorry, but I'm not putting a tick into my glass of wine no matter what you say! :005:
PS, Told you I can't kill anything! ;)
What should we actually do with them?
-
I think this website sells the combo without prescription, I've purchased from them in the past and it covered fleas and ticks, thought it might be worth a try.

Drop them into a container and immerse in neat washing up liquid, shampoo, bleach, or boiling water :shades: ph34r

I told OH how to dispose of the tick, and he says no way is he putting any bug into his whiskey. even if sometimes it is a cheap one rather than a malt depending on how far away from th next pay check we are

there is some where (I'll have to look for it again) an address where to send the ticks too if you find any for their research

:lol2: Just make certain they are dead first, or they will 'walk' ph34r -they are needed for ID, not for breeding :shades:.

Whatever you do with them, try not to accidentally stand on a full one that's fallen off the dog and onto the carpet. I did that once. Big mistake. It made a horrible popping sound and it took me ages to get the blood out of the carpet. Yuk!
