Title: Poppy's poorly. UPDATE: Poppy's home + on the mend!
Post by: gorgeouspoppy on July 06, 2009, 12:15:12 PM
Poppy is very poorly today - think she may have pancreatitis again.  She was very ill 2 years ago with pancreatitis + had an extended stay in hospital.  She recovered well and had been fine (by carefully monitoring her food!) up until this morning.

She has been sick 12 times since 3 am + will not take a drink.  (She isn't even looking for food which is not like her!)  She has been crying on + off and has trouble climbing stairs and is holding her self akwardly as her tummy is probably sore.  She is hot + didn't even getting up when my dad came to see her.  She keeps trying to dig holes to lie in which is how she was last time. She is very quiet + poorly looking, so have vets appointment at 16.30 this afternoon.

Hopefully she will be fine.

Oh no, poor Poppy :'(, maybe if she is not feeling so good you should see if you can get her an emergency appointment :-\. I have everything crossed that it's not pancreatitis and she's feeling better soon :luv: :luv: :luv:. Massive (((((hugs))))) to you both :-* :luv:

Poor Poppy! :luv:
I agree with jennybee here. Seems a long time for her to wait if she's that poorly.
Really hope she is ok, and gets better quickly.
Sending hugs and lots of positive thoughts.

Thanks.
Have tried to get her seen sooner - I phoned at 8am this morning but they said they couldn't see her till 16.30 as they are full, even though they know how unwell she is.  Have just phoned again and have been told the same.  It is frustrating because they are normally really good.
OH is at work but my dad is coming up again + think we might just take her down anyway so they can see Poppy with their own eyes.
xx

UPDATE:
Poor Poppy is having to stay in the vet hospital as she is poorly.  So all upset at leaving her!
We took her down before her appt + still had to sit + wait 20 minutes before seeing the vet.  (The vet nurses I had spoken to when trying to get her seen earlier than 16:30 hadn't passed on how poorly she was. >:D)
Vet was not impressed as Poppy should have been there first thing this morning, not afternoon!
She is on IV fluids as very dehydrated, has had painkillers + bloods done.  Does appear to be pancreatitis so they are treating her for that.
Hopefully will recover quickly now she is getting the treatment.

That's dreadful how you were treated, I hope the vets have words with the nurses, you should have been seen first thing as an emergency. >:D

Poor Poppy, I really hope she is ok and that it isn't anything serious. :luv: When will you get the blood results?

OMG!  Hope she is OK..... I cant believe that they did not pass on how poorly she was  >:D - good job you just took her down there....   You must be so mad with them.

I'm keeping everything crossed and sending lots of positive thoughts that she will be ok..... :luv: :luv:  Hopefully she is getting good care now she is in the right place.

Just goes to show sometimes you just have to trust your own judgement on how ill they are.....

Thinking of you....

Poor Poppy. :'( :'(
Can't believe the vn's incompetence - there should be something done to ensure that this situation is never repeated.
I know the main thing on your mind at the moment is getting Poppy well again, but I do feel it would be in your best interests to make a formal complaint. Sadly its the only way to get things changed these days.
Sending positive thoughts and lots of hugs to Poppy & you.  :luv:

Thanks from Poppy + me for all the positive thoughts.
Will definately be writting a formal letter of complaint which they know, as they know of our disgust at the way Poppy's treatment was delayed.  They were very apologetic but it doesn't change anything.   >:(
They have phoned twice this evening to let me know that she hasn't deterioated any + is quite settled at the moment on her drip + painkillers.  One of her bloods is raised which indicates pancreatitis but they have sent more off to external labs for better results + to look at liver/kidney function as well.  (Thankfully the blood result is not nearly as high as last time.)
I have phone back at 9.30 tomorrow morning for update + progress.

It's good in a way that something is showing in her blood, people tend to panic when something shows up, but it's when nothing shows that it is more worrying.

I agree with these two! (I often do ::) ). That vet nurse should be disciplined in my opinion. Her (in)action could have had very serious consequences.

Update:
Have spoken to the vets this morning + Poppy is improving. :D
She has more energy this morning + sitting up instead of just collapsing in a heap!  Even starting to wag her tail.  (Iv fluids + pain killers working well!)
She still needs some IV fluids at the moment and they are trying her on some chicken to see if she keeps it down.
So she is going in the right direction thankfully!
I am speaking to them again later this afternoon when hopefully all results etc will be back.
Thanks for all the lovely thoughts + messages.

Good news we are just home with Poppy.  :luv:
She kept the food down that the vets gave her + has had no ill effects.  She is now rehydrated so they were happy to let her home.  (Happy to have her home!)
She is still quite weak + sleepy so she is having lots of extra cuddles.  (She jumped out the car + her legs gave way bless her, so will hopefully be fighting fit in a few days.  She is wagging her tail lots so good sign! :D)
She is only on antibiotics + zantac for the rest of the week + has started a prescription diet too.
Poppy says thank you for all the positive thoughts!

So glad that she is home. :luv: Did the vet rule out pancreatitis? What are the antibiotics for? What prescription diet is she on?

Sorry for so many questions, just wondering what the diagnosis was. :D

Hi,
They still believe it was an acute bout of pancreatitis given her history + symptoms + bloods they tested on site. Specific bloods they sent off to external labs will be back end of week to confirm it.  Poppy has a check up Friday evening, so will get results then.
They put her on antibiotics when she went in as standard practice.  (apparently its quite common practice to give antibiotics when they have pancreatitis to prevent any secondary infection occuring, due to higher levels of bacteria in the gut. ph34r)
She has responded well to them so they are continuing the course.
She was on Chappie since her last bout of pancreatitis but still had grumbly tummy every so often. ( Called chronic pancreatitis when every so often she would get an upset tummy but be fine the next day.) She never seemed full on it either.  So she is now on Hills prescription ID diet.  Gentler for her tummy and low fat so will hopefully agree with her better.
Costs a fortune! ph34r
xx

Poppy is doing well today thanks.   :D
She is keeping her food down + drinking well.  She has more energy, but is still sleeping lots. (which is good)
She gets out of her bed to say hello to whoever comes in the house.  Wags her tail a bit, has a cuddle then flakes out in her bed again!
She looks happier as well. And we are much happier with how she is now.   :D
Its such a worry when they are not well.
