Our beloved Toby has not been doing so well the last 36 hours or so. :'( He seems to have gone blind and is crashing into everything. He is also not so keen to go out for his walk but he is eating, drinking and all ablutions are still OK.
We have been building ourselves up for this time for a long time, but fear that it is looming quickly. The added concern we have is that we are all going on holiday on Saturday and were concerned h ow he would cope, but now, if he has gone permanently blind - how on earth will he cope.
We just don't know what to do
-
Go to the vet. Blindness is generally not sudden, so there may be something that can be done or needs to be addressed now.
Sending lots of positive thoughts for Toby and you :bigarmhug:
-
Sorry I should have been clearer. His eyes have not been good for some time. His 3rd eye lid is often over his eyes and we have not been sure how he is still seeing but he has been. They don't actually look any different but he is obviously struggling :'(
-
I'm so sorry to hear about Toby, Pip & thinking of you all :lol2:
Can't really help as to regards the holiday .... I think it may be a personal decision you have to make nearer the time. Sorry i can't be more help but send you lots of caring :bigarmhug:'s for you & Toby anyway
(we moved recently & worried terribly for Tinker but in the end, she was the one, who adjusted to the changes the best. However when we went on holiday to The Lakes we didn't take her with us, as we would be out & about a lot. We thought that would be asking too much from her :-\ )

Aww poor Toby, sending lots of healing hugs :luv:

Only you will know if you should go on holiday and leave Toby, is someone coming in to look after him in your home? if so, then I wouldn't worry too much, as he will cope fine in his own home, he will gradually get used to the layout of the house and will manage fine, as long as no one changes it.
Don't panic too much. dogs cope much better than we do with things, and he will soon get used to everything, as long as you all talk to him as normal and make things easy for him to get around the house and to find his water, food, bed, etc. :D

From me too :bigarmhug:

All we can do toward the end is to let them know how much we love them but I'm sure you are doing this already.

O they just break your heart don't they....the worst part is not knowing exactly how they are feeling....makes us Mums and Dads feel kinda useless :'(
-
Poor Toby, hopefully he will be able cope a little better each day as he comes to terms with not being able to see. Sorry not sure whether he was going with you or staying at home, but whatever happens sending you lots of :bigarmhug:

All the positive thoughts in the world are being sent to you. Will be thinking of you tomorrow.
-
Fingers crossed for you all, hope it is good news :luv:
-
Thinking of you, yes they can go blind very quick sometimes over night, its caused by a build up of blood and pressure alot of older dogs suffer with it.
Is he staying somewhere he knows well when you go on holiday?
-
It's hard not to think of things like "the inevitable" when they are old, but it may be something that can be helped or lived with too
Sending lots of positive thoughts :luv:

I'm so sorry to hear about Toby and hope that the vet visit will lead to some sort of improvement to his eyesight. Do you know what has caused the third eyelid to close? Is it as a result of underlying health problems that you are already aware of? It can be as a result of an infection, which can clear up after a course of antibiotics.
FWIW though, I know of a couple of friends, whose dogs who have lost their sight and within a short while they do adjust remarkably well. Of course it does mean that moving things around in the house is not a good idea and you have to adjust your behaviour, by giving verbal warnings and cues rather than visual, so that you don't frighten him-that sort of thing.
Have you checked your pet insurance? Some policies will include cover you if you have to cancel a holiday as a result of your pet becoming ill.
Thinking of you for tomorrow.
-
Hope all goes well tomorrow. Thinking of you and hoping for a positive outcome.

Thanks for all your good wishes - they worked!
We are back & with Toby. Vet confirmed that he has little functional sight left but all other functions working ok. Went for his walk tonight
Told us to go away on holiday, enjoy it as a family and see what the Autumn brings! Having said that, things could change in a few hours
But for now, we are ok
xx

So happy for you....
Glad you can all go away together. At least the site is off the main roads so if she wanders around and can't see that well, she's pretty safe, same on the beach at the cottages as there are not likely to be many people on the beach besides you!
