also been diagnosed with Hip Dysplaica last Friday. To say that I am devastated is an understatment :'(
Our vet is picking her up on Thursday morning and will take her in for the day to X-ray and manipulate her hips, the X-rays will then go off to the specialist. I will be so glad to get her back on Thursday and my own vet will have a good idea of the severity of Caoimhe's HD. Initially, he didn't think it was too bad and once he had observed her for 20 minutes and she had relaxed it was evident there is a problem in her hips.
Caoimhe had been showing a bit of a funny gait occasionally, which seemed to disappear quite quickly, then she was bunny hopping her hind legs, I put that down to the snow and ice. However, I had her on the beach on Saturday and she was hopping whenever she ran, the only time it disappeared was when she was walking.
I've got my self in a bit of a state about it now, thinking it is worse than I had first imagined, especially when her rear end falls to the side when she jumps on the sofa :'(
I will be glad to see what her vet has to say on Thursday, thankfully Caoimhe does not run around like a loon and is always close by and I have been doing a lot of focus/structured training with her. Similar to Jo's Seth, Caoimhe has 2-3, 20min training/exercise sessions a day over the last 2 months since I got her. Hopefully this will have limited some damage
I so feel for Caoimhe, she has such potential to be a great worker, and as you already know, Seth will not be able to work to his potential :-\
Jo, thank you for getting in touch with me and being so supportive over this, you know how I feel hun. Thank you :-*
Now roll on Thursday :-\
-
I am so very sorry. Hoping for good news for you on Thursday.
-
So sorry for you both :-\
Hope both Caoimhe and Seth can be managed and have enjoyable lives
-
Sorry to hear your news, so sad that this has happened, for both of you.Hope you have some good news on Thursday.
-
I'm very sorry to hear about Caoimhe. Hoping Thursday brings some good news. :bigarmhug:
I had a Cocker with HD, it's such a blow when you receive the news. :-*
-
So sorry to hear about Caomihe :luv:, it's so sad in so many ways :'(
:bigarmhug: for you all
-
Oh how awful... :bigarmhug: I posted on Jo's thread early, I'm really really sorry you've had the same result as well :'( :-* :-* :-*
-
So sorry to hear about Caoimhe. Will be thinking of her on Thursday :luv:
My Dallas was diagnosed with HD along with gluteal atrophy a few years ago but, because he has always been a dog who just 'potters about', it hasn't affected his day-to-day life at all. Reading about poor Seth and Caoimhe has made me realise just how lucky he is in that respect. I really do feel for you, esp as they are both just babies :'(
-
So sorry to read about Caoimhe, Cath :-\ I was wondering if she would be ok after Seth was diagnosed.
I really hope for a good outcome on Thursday - I know that she will have the most wonderful life with you , whatever the news :luv:
Take Care
Caz x

When Crazy Cocker gang posted I did wonder if little caoimhe would be affected. Its such a shame :'(
:bigarmhug:

I'm so sorry Cath hun, I've got my fingers crossed for Thursday. I can't believe any of this, it's so unfair :-\
-
I'm so sorry :(
Jo knows our Archie who has chronic hip dysplasia, which was undiagnosed until he came to us aged 4.
I really can't recommend hydrotherapy enough, not only as a way of strengthening muscle which will help to hold the hip joints in place, but also as a way of giving them good, safe exercise. (Archie was always tired afterwards ;))
Archie had the femeral head of one of his back legs removed completely. He is on a high load of nsaids to allow him to cope, but he also has the life of riley.
Of course, as a rescue show cocker we never had the hopes for him that you and Jo have for Caoimhe and Seth and I understand completely how devastated you must be, but I did want to let you know that they can both still have a lot of fun.
This was Archie two weeks ago in full flight (with the hip that was operated on facing the camera)

And this was him on his second lap of the field ph34r

I'll be keeping everything crossed for you on Thursday x

-
Jo, thank you for getting in touch with me and being so supportive over this, you know how I feel hun. Thank you :-*
Now roll on Thursday :-\
God dont thank me.
I recommended Caoimhe to you and feel the very least I could do was to call and tell you Seths diagnosis.
Again Cath I am so, so, so sorry.
Both for recommending Caoimhe and for the diagnosis.
Give me a ring on Thurs hun :-*

There was no way you could have predicted this Jo :bigarmhug: The ones that should feel sad and guilty are the people that bred these pups :'( :'( :'(

Will the KC now put endorsements on the parents so that they aren't bred from again?

I dont know about the KC end but the breeder has spoke to the orthapedic specialist and decided never to breed from the dam again.
-
sensible decision at least

xx

Ahhh I am so sorry Cath, I really do feel for you and Jo,
-
I am so sorry to read this, especially after Seth's diagnosis. All the best for Thursday, for you and Caoimha.
What is so good about this forum, though, is that people are honest. Honest people who love their dogs and want the best for them, and aren't afraid to admit there may be problems in the breed. I have watched well known breeders (variety of breeds - not only cockers), in another country scrapping and arguing over genetic diseases, pretending they 'can't possibly be responsible'; blaming nutrition, over exercise, etc, and all the while the poor dogs are suffering as are their unsuspecting owners who tried to do everything the 'right way'.
-
I am so sorry Cath, what horrible news. :bigarmhug:
I feel deeply passionate that cocker breeders should be more proactive at doing all the tests they can to provide a healthy start for the pups they breed, and to also be honest and upfront about any issues their dogs may have, over and above the KC regulations. I have tried very hard to restrict Tali's exercise because his father's hip score was 2 points higher than the KC suggest and his mother had no score. However, from my research, this seems, unfortunately, quite common. I've even put on weight so that we go up stairs in the lift rather than him racing up two flights several times a day.
In my opinion, I feel that until all breeds of dog are breed purely for health and temprament and not for a 'breed standard', sadly hip dysplasia, clef palettes and other common ailments are going to continue to rear their ugly heads creating pain for the poor animals and heartache for the poor owners.
-
So sorry for the diagnosis especially following on from Seths diagnosis.
-
This is such bad news - really glad that both Seth and Caoimhe are in the best hands to help them.
Wonder whether the breeder will inform the other owners for this litter?
Just as an aside: Would the sale of goods cover the dogs - ie. dogs were bought to work and can no longer do this, so no longer fit for purpose.
-
So sorry to read this - you have a lot on your plate at the moment. I am sure you will do the best for your little girl though and she will have a happy life - she won't know any different :-\
Sending hugs and positive thoughts to you both :bigarmhug:
-
So very very sorry to hear this news. In goldens, hip scoring for reputable breeders is automatic as also are elbows. It's not just cockers, there are many other breeds with this awful problem.
Because they are so young, hopefully the damage can be limited. I know how disappointed you both are but life throws theses things up and if the worse happens their lives will be different but they will still be loved and wanted by you both.
-
Sorry to hear the news :'(.
-
I am so, so sorry :bigarmhug: Sending you lots of positivity for Thursday :luv:

Jo, does he believe it comes from the dam? As you know, he is local to me and there are implications for several people I know. I am so very sorry for you and Seth and Cath and Caoimhe. It is devastating news. You did everything right in searching for your perfect pups. It's not your fault that others are possibly less responsible and caring than you. But, like HeatherandBenjy, I have discovered that there is an awful lot of medical support available for a dog with hip problems. I am astonished at how well Gillon has progressed. I know it's doubly bad for you two because you wanted to work your pups. But there is still a lovely life ahead, I feel sure. x

me too - and it really saddens me to think that there could be others in the litter suffering too :'( :'(
When I spoke to the breeder on Saturday, he assured me that a friend has the other 2 litter mates and they are perfectly fine!

Jo, don't you ever be sorry, you have nothing to be sorry about, and at the end of the day, I love Caoimhe to pieces and I wouldn't be without my little sweetheart for anything, she is utterly precious :luv:
Again Cath I am so, so, so sorry.
Both for recommending Caoimhe and for the diagnosis.
Give me a ring on Thurs hun :-*

No one can point to anyone and say it comes from the dam, sire or both.
The dams owner has decided not to bred the bitch again because there are no tests and no way to know.

It's an absolute minefield :-\
Thank you all for your good wishes for Thursday, I will be glad when 5pm comes on the day and I get her home, no matter what the diagnosis :luv:
-
So sorry :'(
-
Been thinking about you today and hoping that the results from Caoimhe's tests are as good as they can be x
-
Caoimhe is home safe and sound, with a better diagnosis than I had expected. I am pleased to let you all know Caoimhe's HD is confined to her left hip and it is mild. The vet said there is no reason why she can not live a happy, healthy life and work as she was intended for
I am so relieved for her, I just have to keep an eye on her and make sure she has a good diet and does not put on too much weight. I will manage that no problem :D
I was so happy I could have hugged the vet ph34r :lol2:
I only wish I could change her brother Seth's diagnosis :'( Caoimhe is a very lucky girl. Thank you all again for your good wishes for Caoimhe, your support has been tremendous and very much appreciated.
Loads of working cocker kisses to you all from Caoimhe the diva :-*
-
I'm so pleased that it's mild and only in one hip Cath  Way to go little black girl :luv: :luv:
I too wish with all my heart that I could change Seth's diagnosis - it's just not fair :'( :'( :'(
-
That's fantastic news Cath

-
What devastating news for all concerned.
At the end of the day, although the news is so very terrible and sad......these dogs are still lucky......they have you :luv: Owners who will do their very best to ensure they are not in pain and that quality of life is the best it can be.
Thinking of you all
