Swollen ears
« on: January 21, 2013, 11:55:55 AM »

My little girl woke up this morning with both ears swollen :o seems OK in herself perhaps not as active as normal  :dunno:

I've been gloss painting and have obviously tried to keep her away from the wet paint but I wonder whether the fumes may have caused a reaction :'( :dunno: she did have some gammon yesterday for the first time but everything else is pretty much routine :-\
There are no marks or open wounds around her ears so I guess I need to visit the vet ph34r

That is really odd for both ears to be swollen - it could be an allergic reaction to something I guess or maybe ear mites?

Yes, I think it's a vets visit -  you could call them first and see if you could treat with Piriton if they feel it's an allergic reaction which is not getting any worse.

Hope you get to the bottom of it  :-\

This happened to Poppy when she was stung by a wasp, which as Helen suggests was treated with Piriton

Aww no Miya, lets hope it is just an allergic reaction and not something else.

Vet thinks allergy, asked me to keep an eye on her over next 24 hours.
Also gave her two injections, one was a steroid to reduce the swelling and the other [as Helen mentioned] Piriton for the allergy.
Hope it not toxic fumes from the gloss paint as I've only just started!

Maybe wishful thinking but I don't think the swelling is covering as much an area of her ears as this morning :luv:

I guess it could be but I've not heard of that reaction before - more sneezing, itchy skin reactions etc, and I guess the same could be said about the gammon    I really couldn't say either way :dunno:

Has she had any of the other allergic symptoms?

Itchy, red, moist or scabbed skin
    Increased scratching
    Itchy, runny eyes
Itchy back or base of tail (most commonly flea allergy)
    Itchy ears and ear infections
    Sneezing
    Vomiting
    Diarrhea
Snoring caused by an inflamed throat
    Paw chewing/swollen paws
    Constant licking

(The piriton should work pretty quickly - has she been in the room with the new paint today?)

None of the above.
She has been in the same room but at a distance.

Glad she's back to normal

It might be that you never know the cause. My first Cocker suddenly swelled up all over one day when he was a puppy. It was Christmas Day morning and I had to rush him to the vet in case it afffected his breathing (luckily it didn't). He hadn't eaten anything different or new, had been walked in the usual place and hadn't had any Christmas pressies or eaten any wrapping paper. It never happened again so we never knew the cause :dunno:
