Bailey fitted......
« on: June 07, 2006, 07:18:43 PM »
Bailey dog just had some kind of fit.  It was horrible. :'(

He was laying on the sofa on his back and he started licking his lips in a funny way. Then his breathing became very strange, heavy and rolling, coming almost in waves.  His eyes then started rolling and then he weed himself.  Not just a little wee, loads and loads everywhere.  He wouldn't move much and seemed really disorientated.  All his legs were shaking and his nose was really dry.  Then he wet himself again.

Then about 2 mins later he came to and he seems fine now.

The whole thing lasted about 20 mins, I am pretty sure it is because of the heat.   :-\

Anyone else had anything like this happen?

Has he had anything like this before? It does sound scary. We see a lot of dogs on meds for epilepsy, but if he's not had it before I'd be inclined to get him checked out, or his temperature taken - in case he has an infection or other reason for it happening. Twenty minuts is quite a long time, so I'd at least phone the vet and get advice tonight.

I hope he's ok hon. x

No nothing like this has happened before.

I had a german shepherd when I lived with my parents and she was epileptic, but this seemed different.

Obviously i haven't walked him today - too hot, but we were in the garden pottering about this arvo, I just think he has over heated.  I did spray him with the hose every half an hour of so, but maybe that was not enough.

Thanks hun

I'm so sorry - that must have been so scary.  My mum's dog had a fit a little while back and she phoned me in a panic - i just felt useless not really knowing what to do.

Best to get the poor baby checked over by the vet.

Oh mate - that sounds horrible poor you and poor Bailey  :'( :'( :'(

I agree with the others - best to get it checked by a vet.  It may just be the heat but its better to know for sure.

Sending you {{{hugs}}} and the nutters send friendly ggrrrrrs and gentle ear pulls  ;) :luv: :luv: :luv: :luv:

I'm firmly in the "phone the vet" camp, too - right now !

It must have been really scary - make sure you look after yourself too

Mich, you poor thing - what a fright... and poor ickle Bailey Boy...

Phone the vet, even if just to set your mind at rest....
If you have witnessed a canine epileptic fit and this was different then yes it could well have been the heat.... But phone the vet!!

Dillon sends Bailey a gentle nudge, and I am sending hugs to you (and one of these coz they make me smile  :-*)

Ok the vet said that it is almost definitely heat stroke.  She said she is 99% sure that it was brought on by the heat.

She has booked bails in for 8 in the morning just incase, he has any more symptoms over night. (It is 24hr too so i can take him in at any time if i need to.)

So I am to keep him at room temp and calm and make sure he drinks lots. I have to call her in the morning again so we can decide whether he needs to be checked over.

Thanks so much everyone.

Bailey is asleep on the sofa now right next to me :luv: I am feeling lots calmer after talking to the vet, it was def the right thing to do.  Thanks again!

Saw these on another post earlier in the week - wonder if Bailey would like a body cooler pet mat - I'm going to get one for Dill
