  • Look at me!!!!
Well barney went to the vets this morning for his booster vaccinations.  While there I mentioned that he had been scooting his bum on the floor a bit but that i thought he was fully de-wormed etc.  The vet checked his anal glands and they were completely full...and worse they had got infected  :'( He is now on antibiotics for a week and we have another appointment on friday to get him checked over.

I wish i had taken him to the vets sooner as soon as i suspected that there might be a problem with his anal glands - so an important lesson to all COLers - I hope you guys can learn from my neglectful mother status!

Shame on you  ;) :005: :005: Only kidding!!! I took Vegas to get his glands emptied the day after I noticed him scooting and they were already infected at that point so don't be too hard on yourself  ;) Hope the antibiotics do the trick

Ooops, Mikey has been doing this so do you think I should take him to the vets?  he scoots along the floor and then goes back to sniff where he's scooted.   ::)

If they scoot, is it always anal gland probs?, are there any other symptoms?  he's been wormed recently.

Never had this with my collie or Ronald, are spaniels more prone to anal gland probs?

He might just have an itchy bum  :005: :005:

They can scoot if they have been a bit squitty, as Jersey has been doing. If the poos are normal then impacted anal glands would be the most likely problem

Might be worth getting it checked out cos we had never heard of anal gland issues before joining COL and even then my OH was laughing at me because he thought it was a load of rubbish (he's eating his words now).

Apparently our vet said it was more common in smaller dogs..don't knwo if that is actually the case...we now plan to start adding bran to his meals to help the fibre intake!!!

Yep, same as Mikey, we've got wood and tiles everywhere downstairs and he only scoots on the rug in the lounge - luckily it's brown already :005:.

Aww, Rachel, you're not a bad mummy at all! I'm sure he'll be fine in no time at all.

Tell the lovely Barney that Bella sends him cocker kisses and can sympathise as she's been there herself!  :luv:

there is usually a nasty fishy metallic smell if there are anal gland problems so on the 2 ocassions that jarv has suffered we had that symptom fairly quickly, and although the glands were full, they weren't infected.

was there no smell with barney rachel?  (it is a very distinct smell   :o )

No there wasn't - which is why i didn't realise there was a problem.  Both james and  i have had a failry bad cold over the last week so maybe we just couldn't smell it  ph34r although when the vet did the squeezing we could certainly smell it  ph34r

Barney is enjoying his bran-covered food at the moment - and is certainly enjoying the antibiotics that we are hiding in ham  :005:
