Infected Tail
« on: June 16, 2008, 10:51:35 AM »
Hi everyone,

Our dog meggy has been getting bouts of having an infected tail tip. The vet says that its from knocking/ trauma to her tail. They believe this is due to incorrect tail  docking. Where someone docks the tail by holding the puppy up by the tail and docking it. Then when the puppy is let go of the skin doesn't go over the tail it rolls back. It never heals properly so every time she knocks it, it gets infected. Then off we go to the vets for another lot of antibiotics. We've only had her 3 months she is a ex breeding bitch from a puppy farm and her tail has got infected twice since having her. It doesn't seem her to much, but we don't like to see her unhappy when it does bother her.

So with that in mind, I have booked her in tomorrow to have her tail redocked to get rid of the scar tissue and do a neater job than was done previously. We feel like we are trying to give her a better life than she had and she keeps having to go to the vets for her tail.

Has anyone else experienced this, either an infected tail tip or having to have their dogs tail redocked and if so what has the outcome been?

As I read your post I was thinking that she needed this op, so I am really glad they are doing it.

I am sure that it will heal beautifully so long as they remove all the infected tissue, and she will be so much happier.

Poor love, bad enough to be used as a puppy machine, but to have to endure all that pain too... :'(

Good for you for taking her from what must have been a miserable life, to a lovely, nice and happy one now :-*.

A friend of ours had a rescue greyhound, and he used to bleed from his tail where he wagged it so much it hit things and it bled.  In the end the vet had to remove the tail.  Problem solved now.

Love to you and Meggy  :luv:

Poor Meggy, what a shame, but it sounds as though the op should sort things out and put an end to her discomfort.

One of the ladies i work with had this with her ESS dog ....his dock was done badly and the bone was trying to grow out of the scar....She had his surgery done earlier this year when he was two....the specialist removed the last two(if i remember correctly) sections of bone in his tail....he healled fantastically no more mad chewwing and constance infections.....looked abit odd at first when it was hair less post surgery...but now you wouldn't really know until you touch it....she shows him and he still does well...

Good luck tomorrow and wishing you a speedie recovery Meggy  :luv: :-*

I can't believe that pups could be docked in this way, but then I suppose with puppy farmers it's no surprise.  >:D

I did have a pup who got an infected tail end but which had been docked quite correctly, it was some time ago but even then I was worried that the vet wouldn't treat it because they didn't condone docking.  However, after plenty of bathing the puss came out and with some antib's it healed up with no further problems.  I hope the op helps Meggy's tail and good on you for giving her a lovely new home :luv:
