Ticks again
« on: June 09, 2004, 07:27:46 PM »
We are going to the Scottish highlands for a few days and have been told to watch for ticks on Indie as there are a lot about up there :?   I just wanted to ask if there is a spray or powder to prevent Indie picking any up?

Thanks

I don't know of anything that will stop her picking ticks up but the Frontline or the Advantix will kill the little blighters when they bite into the skin.

I've recently seen swedish studies that concluded that garlic pills prevents ticks on humans. Friends from Sweden says that this goes for dogs too.

-and no, they won't get smelly breath from the pills (not more than usual   )

We use frontline but it never works, probably due to a very high concentration of ticks in the area caused by a very high concentration of roedeer.  I'm going to start giving the pills instead.

I've always given my dogs garlic capsules and they have never had fleas!  Never had to use any sort of frontline etc.

Ticks mostly only go for short-haired areas (unless that's a myth??) - I've seen (and dealt with!   ) a few on the bridge of my cat's nose, but never found any on the dogs. The ticks I've seen are either green (newly attached), or red (when feeding).

Green????????

Are u sure Mike???

The colour of the tick is decided by its stage of life. (nymph, adult) We have them everywere, not only in the shorthaired areas.

Morgan's had a tick on his ears and one on the back of his neck.  Both were greyish in colour.

The chances are that Indie won't get any ticks but if you're really worried you can get one of the tick pickers in any pet shop for about £1 - if you want to be armed and ready incase of invasion    :D
