Anal gland cancer
« on: August 18, 2010, 10:13:34 AM »
Hi guys
I wonder if anyone can help or give me their stories about anal gland cancer.  Our lovely Tyler has been diagnosed with this cancer, it was only due to taking her to the vets to have hr glands squeezed that we found out their was a problem.  The vet rang last night with the news and gave us 3 options. 1. Take her to liverpool for scans/x rays an operation to remove the tumour and lymph glands with chemo and radio therapy which is £4000. 2. She has an operation to remove the tumour only and we keep an eye on her. 3. Leave it altogether which if it gets bigger will cause her problems and no doubt pain.

She is 11 and so we dont want to put her through surgery so will probably go with the removal.  She isnt in any pain and has shown no signs of any of the symptom's we have read about.  Understandably we are very upset, but we are trying to be positive and she is happy as larry as usual!

Thanks
Vicky

Sorry to hear about Tyler.   My Harry was diagnosed at a similar age and, like Tyler, without him showing any signs of discomfort.   He had the gland removed and carried on as normal without any further treatment.   (He was also diagnosed with testicular cancer a couple of years later - was castrated and again carried on as normal.)  I lost him in January this year at the ripe old age of 15 and a half  :luv:  He had other health problems but only showed deterioration in his last 7 or 8 months.

Hopefully Tyler will have the same result.

No advice but some big hugs  :bigarmhug: and good luck with whatever you decide.

Mrs. T's experience with her Harry sounds encouraging.

Hi,

Dylan was diagnosed with an analadenoma (sp?) when he was 10years old.  He was in for a routine booster and we mentioned him paying particular attention to his bum.

Tom (our vet) felt a lump in his anal gland.  So he was booked in to have it removed and it tested for cancer.

It was an analadenoma (non cancerous) but whilst the tumour was removed, Tom advised us to have Dylie castrated at the same time.  Although he was quite old to be castrated (no reason to have him done before), Tom said that if it was the type of tumour he thought it was, then it was more likely to come back because of his hormones, so best to be castrated at the same time.

Touch wood, Dylie has been fine ever since (and was 12 yrs old in June  :luv:).

I've also experienced a dog (Morgan  ) who had a tumour in his testicle. When having it removed, it was actually a secondary tumour. He had a tumour in his spleen (that was removed at the same time). He had chemo, but he died just shy of 2 months after his op (13th Dec '09). He was 11.5 years old.

Go with your gut instinct - you know your dog better than anyone. But I would have a biopsy taken so that you know exactly what you're dealing with (unless your vet is 100% sure it's cancer).

PM me if you like.
Hugs to you all  :luv:

Hi, so so sorry to hear about your poor girlie. We had the same awful news with our black and white cocker,Happy. She was diagnosed at 8 and a half years with anal gland carcinoma. We were given much the same options as you. We decided to have her scanned by a specialist with the view to removal/and or chemo and radiotherapy. The vet thought that as the tumour was small, about the size of a kernel of sweetcorn , that it was early stages. Unfortunately the scan showed a spread through her whole lymph system and another mass in her chest. We were offered chemo and radiotherapy but decided against them as she was so well in herself and absolutely hated staying at the vets. We were told that with treatment she might have about 8months and without 4-6months so we decided to spoil her rotten and enjoy what time we had. She did have treatment with steroids which were to help slow the growth. She remained very well in herself for 5and a half months and you would not have known she was ill. In the last two weeeks she slowed down and did not want to walk much although there was no sign of any pain . She did start to struggle a bit with toiletting but again with no distress. We sadly made the decision the week before christmas that she was worn out and we were worried that we were risking waiting for her to show pain before we were brave enough to let her go and we didnt want her last days to be like that so she went to sleep very peacefully almost 6months to the day from diagnosis. Im sorry this is painful reading for you and I am crying just remembering having to make the decision.  I really hope you have a better prognosis fom this horrible disease, I guess I just wanted you to know that in our experience they can live quite normal quality of life and that im sure you know what is best for your little girl treatment wise and you will do what is best for her. My thoughts are with you and a very gentle hug to Tyler xxx

We have booked Tyler in for her op to remove the lump on Monday.  I also found an internet site about an american guy called Ted Schneck (Curing Canine Cancer) and have downloaded his article.  It talks about holistic approaches so I am also going to try some of his advice to help her in her fight against it.  Whatever we can do to help her quality of life we will do.

Thanks for all your support
