Hi,
Dylan was diagnosed with an analadenoma (sp?) when he was 10years old. He was in for a routine booster and we mentioned him paying particular attention to his bum.
Tom (our vet) felt a lump in his anal gland. So he was booked in to have it removed and it tested for cancer.
It was an analadenoma (non cancerous) but whilst the tumour was removed, Tom advised us to have Dylie castrated at the same time. Although he was quite old to be castrated (no reason to have him done before), Tom said that if it was the type of tumour he thought it was, then it was more likely to come back because of his hormones, so best to be castrated at the same time.
Touch wood, Dylie has been fine ever since (and was 12 yrs old in June
).
I've also experienced a dog (Morgan
) who had a tumour in his testicle. When having it removed, it was actually a secondary tumour. He had a tumour in his spleen (that was removed at the same time). He had chemo, but he died just shy of 2 months after his op (13th Dec '09). He was 11.5 years old.
Go with your gut instinct - you know your dog better than anyone. But I would have a biopsy taken so that you know exactly what you're dealing with (unless your vet is 100% sure it's cancer).
PM me if you like.
Hugs to you all
