Advocate and Frontline
« on: March 31, 2011, 07:43:16 AM »
I applied Advocate to Alfie's neck as he has a tick right beside his eye and realised he was overdue a dose as a prevention for ear mites. I thought I would be killing 2 birds with one stone, but my son said he couldn't see any mention of tick treatment for Advocate online so when I checked the packet he was right. Was going to get some Frontline now, but wondered if it's OK to use both. Does anyone use both these products at the same time, but not necessarily applied on the same day?

Don't use Frontline Fleas and ticks are becoming immume to this product, our vet recommends Advocate in our area because we are so rural and get a lot of ticks

Advocate doesn't do ticks.   ;)  When I asked, my vet said that it's safe to use both Frontline and Advocate together.  I don't like using too much in the way of Spot-On stuff though, so have never used both at the same time myself.

I don't like the spot on stuff, it seems to get everywhere and then I don't know if enough has soaked in.  :-\I use frontline spray and take off ticks with otom.

I had just frontlined Macey when she was found to be ill ,one of the things vet suspected was lungworm and so gave me advocate to apply straight away .I did say she had just been frontlined but she said it was ok to do the advocate on top ...

Just shows you how good Frontline is NOT when you can use 2 products together, I'm just wondering if they have taken out an ingredient because years ago you could only get Frontline at the Vet's or with a Vet's prescription

i think that some mix up Antantage with ADVANTIX. This is what  I used when taking Cassie to Spain last year. This does cover ticks as well a fleas. It won't stop them attaching but I think stops them feeding and they DIE, the bl????dy horrible things
Our vet thinks though this product does spread it's self too thin trying to ward off so many pests. we tend to forget that, as like humans dogs can badly affected by Mozzies and Sand flies. I believe that Advantix covers Mozzies and Sand flies too

I have just ordered one of the O'tom tick removers which I hadn't heard of until I read your replies. Having struggled to remove the tick from near Alfie's eye tonight which bled a bit and left a little bald patch then watched the demo video, I just wish I'd had one tonight. I'll also check with the vet re using Frontline as well as Advocate. There's definitely no mention of it being a preventative measure against ticks for those of you who thought it did. It covers ear mites, fleas and a range of worms.

We have Jess on Advantage against heartworm, apparently there is quite a bit of it around where we are,  and also she has Billy No Mates once a day because Advantage doesn't do anything re ticks.   BNM is a herbal mixture, it smells spicy, and it is supposed to repel ticks as well as fleas and mites, anyway so far so good because we have not seen a single tick.  Also it is supposed to be good for the coat.  Jess certainly loves it.

We do still have the OTom though just in case.

Because the New Forest has more than it's fair share of ticks I'm always on the lookout for them and check William and Louis after each walk. Sometimes (especially on William who is mainly white) I spot them before they latch on, otherwise I use an O'tom.

I occasionally use a spot on called Prac-tic, which kills fleas within 24 hours of application and is effective for 4 weeks. It kills ticks within 48 hours of application and is effective for 4 weeks. I think it's pretty good but I don't use it every 4 weeks, more like every 4 months because I don't like to apply stuff like that to the dogs too often.

I tried Billy No Mates on them last year but TBH it seemed pretty useless, so I'm relying on daily checking and my trusty O'tom at the moment.

Is there any particular reason you favour Prac-tic (which I haven't heard of before) to Frontline for ticks?

My girl Purdey had diagnosed lungworm 2 years ago. I think I'm right in saying that Advocate can prevent Lungworm but not a cure if she truly has it  :dunno:  Purdey was put on Panacur for 3 weeks, with a weeks gap & then a futher week to make sure all hatching larvae would be killed. Specialist we were referred to at the time said the 3 ways of diagnosing lungworm were a. lung washes  b. stool sample testing   c. treatment with Panacur & see if symptoms improve.
If you suspect she may have Lungworm, please get the best advice you can - we very nearly lost Purdey & only found out when she developed pneumonia & was terribly poorly  :'(   She's been left with heart damage because of it but is fitting fit now  :luv:
