Worried about Fern after 1st trip to groomer - updated
« on: April 14, 2011, 09:26:06 AM »
She was clipped yesterday as her coat had got so long and woolly.

She looks lovely but she is behaving really strangely.  She keeps scuttling off and lying down quickly - she's ok if she's out on a walk but if she's at home she just keeps lying down and running to lie down.  Last time she was like this was 5 years ago when she was spayed and had a sore tummy.

Is it simply a case of her feeling naked and strange?  Or is she traumatised?

I feel awful  :'( and would be grateful for any advice, many thanks x

Poor Fern  :luv:

They haven't nicked her have they or gone too close with the clippers and given her "razor burn"? This happened to one of mine once.

I'm not sure, there doesn't appear to be any redness anywhere - although it is very close in places.

I am at work and hubby is with her today, I feel so upset and worried and feel bad for what we have done to her

Maggie behaved similar to that for a day or so when I brought her back from the groomers last time, as far as I could see she hadn't been nicked but she was very closed clipped round her lady parts! and every now and then it seemed to really bother her.  Almost like razor burn as Holly Berry said....

For that and the problems with her back I've decided not to take her back and am trying to do her myself at home. She might not be the prettiest cocker now but I know how long she's standing for etc and I can just trim her little and often.

Hope Fern has settled down by the time you get home  :luv:

Maybe the cut is a bit itchy scratchy in places if it is really short? Hope she settles down.

Thanks everyone, I just rang hubby and he said she is scuffing her bottom alot along the grass so I've rang the groomer to ask if she did her anal glands and she said she did and possibly is a bit itchy?  She said to put some distilled witchhazel on her, I've never heard of it, she said can get from chemist.

Does emptying glands cause discomfort?  I thought it was uncomfortable when they are full   :'(

She was there just under 2 hours - I've just called the vets and they said that the groomer probably didn't empty the glands properly, and she's scooting to try and clear them, they said to bring her in if it keeps up or if she starts chewing.

So annoying because she wasn't having any problems with her glands before  :'(

They shouldn't if they needed doing, unless she has some infection. Was she showing signs of needing them doing?

I know as routine now dogs anal glands can be checked as part of the groom. It may be that they didn't need help emptying, has she had problems, or not had a poo before her groom?

Hi Holly, she wasn't showing signs of them needing doing

In the past she's smelt when they are full but we started giving her a tiny amount of all bran in her breakfast and has been fine for a couple of years.  She had a poo before the groom.  I wish she hadn't done it - or at least she could have asked!

This happened to Spud after he had been to the groomers, she had emptied his anal glands and he had got an infection.
Hope Fern is feeling better soon

Ooh poor spud - was it instant or did it come on a few days later?

I am going to assess her when I get home from work (leaving soon) and take her to the vets if she's still off.
