Just seen this thread.....hope sweet little Tinker :luv: is on the mend and feeling better. How is Lungworm treated? Is there a vaccination to prevent it ?

Our vets have prescribed Advocate - I was reassured that it does prevent & cure Lungworm but I know there are some questions about it  :dunno:  No vaccination I'm afraid & symptoms do vary a lot, so it's just a case of being really vigilant & questioning when somethings not quite right  :-\

I was asked for permission for Purdeys case to be included - hopefully with new studies they'll get this very serious condition investigated fully & all vets will have a universal treatment/prevention plan that all of them will follow  ;)

Hi Linds, sorry I is confused....thought it was Miss Tinker that was being treated????. I hope Miss Purdey isn't
poorly as well????

Sorry to confuse you Lawrie  ph34r   Elaine is right though - I meant Purdeys old records from when she had lungworm 2 years ago  ;)

Oh Lindsey, poor Tinker :'(

I hope the treatments work quickly and Tinker is back to normal as soon as possible :luv:. Will they be able to tell you for definite if it's pneumonia or lungworm?

I did wonder the same thing myself Elaine but because she's being treated for both at the same time I doubt we'll ever know for sure  :-\  which is a bit of a shame because I would like to of known.

& Lisa ....don't know about Tinker sharing Maggie's ice cream ...what about me?   :005:

Thanks for the clarification there Linds, wasn't aware of Purdey's condition, sorry  :embarassed:.

Lawrie, I think Lindsey might have been asked if Purdey's case (when she had lungworm and it wasn't diagnosed for a while and caused complications if I remember rightly) can be included in the study.
Elaine - sorry not have replied to your post...thought it best to hear straight from Linds, as you didn't sound too sure  ;)

oh gawd Lindsey I'm sorry to hear this - is there ANY specialist that can confirm if it is pneumonia?

It just seems they are lumping things into the Lungworm/French heartworm cubby hole without definitive proof at the moment (I asked my vet about it and he agreed that it needs far more research and he wouldn't commit to advising that Advocate works as a preventative (but agreed that it, or panacur granules, seem to work as a cure  :-\ )

Oh my gosh! I've only just seen this second bit!

Berti had a very raised temperature one night and could barely move. He had reverse sneezing too. He was rushed to the emergency vet who did nothing more than stabalise him and give him huge doses of Panacure. However, Anna painstakingly whittled Berti's symptoms down and finally did an exploritory of Bert's airways. This showed severe lungworm damage.

As Berti had not needed the vets for a long time, OH had no idea about lungworm. It left Berti scarred for life in his airways and even now with the cancer Berti suffers reverse sneezing and quite nasty infections of the nose.

Now Tali is no longer on Pilocarpine, he is going to go back on Advocate. I don't like it but our fox population around here is getting stupid. They are getting so tame and tease Tali on his walks getting closer and closer to us. Tali doesn't go for snails, but........

I am so, so sorry Linds. Whatever the cause Tink doesn't need anything affecting her airways. I hope she recovers fully :bigarmhug:
