Fraser's just eaten blood meal (for plants). Dangerous?
« on: June 13, 2012, 10:37:14 PM »
I looked out the patio door to see him eating some blood meal I had in a dish. I don't think he had much. Is it likely to be dangerous for him?

I dont know but I have just had a quick google this is what I found.

Blood meal – While it’s a great organic fertilizer, if ingested, it can cause vomiting and diarrhea for dogs. More importantly, it can result in severe pancreatitis – inflammation of the pancreas.

May be worth ringing your vet.

He's had no reaction so far and it's about 2 hours later. I googled and found an item similar about the possibility of pancreatitis and another that said if it's not a large amount, it's probably okay. I'll keep an eye on him and if he shows any signs of distress, it's off to the vets. Just like having a toddler the way you're going along okay and then suddenly they've got into something worrying.

If in doubt always ring vet 1st - mine once ate miracle gro so had to ring emergency vets one weekend afternoon when my own vets closed.
