Hope your girlie is not too uncomfortable!

If the vet thinks it may be genetic do you know if any of the breeders other dogs have had liver problems ?

MaggieR - thanks for your pm; hope you got my reply. How do you get the Denamarin down Maggie? I struggle!
Thank you everyone for your concern. I feel desperate to help Cher and guilty about Hollie who is getting little attention right now. You have helped me today.
No worries - as I said - this place is just the best, everyone understands just how much your girls mean to you and what you'll be going through.  I'm pretty lucky with Maggie in that she just swallows food if its that kinda size - I know its supposed to be on an empty stomach but I figure a piece of ham/chicken/cheese wrapped round it will be ok.  I think they do a chewable version of it tho?  More expensive but if its coming from the insurance I suspect they would cover it.  I've started to get mine from the internet as a lot cheaper than the vet and you don't need a prescription for the Denamarin - just for the Destolit.
:bigarmhug: for your lovely girl and take care of yourself..

So sorry you and  your little ones are going through this.  I don't have much advice for Cher but diet can play a role in the management of liver problems. A lower protein level, but of a very high quality can help to lessen the stress on the liver and reduce the ammonia levels that build up in the body when the liver is failing. The problem is that if she's not eating it doesn't matter what diet you're trying to feed her :( There are other drugs and some antibiotics that can also be used to modify the gut flora and reduce the ammonia and toxic metabolite levels which make them feel really grotty. I really hope she feels better soon. Hugs to both your girls and a hug for you too.
