Lulu cant open mouth very wide!
« on: July 06, 2015, 01:08:20 PM »
Hi all, Lulu is just over five and I have noticed that over the past day when she yawns she doesn't open her mouth very wide (about half an inch) rather than wide open. When I try to do it for her I get so far and she whimpers, I have had a feel all over her including her mouth with no problems and can't feel anything obvious,
apart from this she is her normal self, running, playing eating etc. Any ideas would be welcome.

I'd be off to the vet. I think it needs checking even if she seems perfectly OK in every other way.

Hope she's OK :D

Archie had exactly the same thing last year. He was struggling to eat too. I took him to the vet and they said he clearly had a painful jaw but couldn't find a reason why. Maybe just been chewing too vigorously?! He had some anti inflammatories and he bounced back but they told me to keep an eye on it as there is a jaw condition that can cause permanent problems. He seems fine now although some mornings his mouth seems stiff and I give his jaw a little massage. (He's probably putting it on because he loves a massage!  :shades:)

Lulu is eating her normal food and chew sticks and some hide rings that we put onto a purpose made nylon bone which are hard and she still pulls on them. I can put my fingers right into her mouth and touch all her teeth and move her jaw!!!!!!

I'd get her checked at the vets, had same thing with Maggie and she had an absess right at the back which was caused by a hole in her gum.... no idea what caused it whether a stick or bone but needed AB's to sort it out.

Just got back from vet's with Lulu and she said it could be "Masticatory Muscle Myositis" what on earth is this. Lulu has been given some ABs so we have to see how we go. :'(

Sorry to hear Lulu is unwell.

Will the vet be doing any further tests to help with the diagnosis ?

I hope Lulu and you feel better soon.

Sharon.

This is what the vet mentioned when I took Archie. (It's the "condition" I mentioned) I googled it at the time and panicked a bit. This was the article I found. https://purinaproclub.com/resource-library/pro-club-updates/early-diagnosis-of-masticatory-muscle-myositis-is-needed-for-treatment-success
Fortunately Archie recovered quickly from whatever was affecting him. I do keep an eye on it though. Hopefully Lulu will recover quickly too.
