(self) bum licking

Is persistant bum licking/nibbling a sign of a gland problem?
Daisy has just been wormed so it isnt that.

Any other possibilities?

is it her "bum" bum or her private benjamins?

If its her private benjamins she could potentially be about to come into season

if it's her "bum" bum then it could be her anal glands, have you noticed her "scooting" her butt across your floor? or does she smell slightly fishy in her general bum area. These 2 factors can indicate full anal glands also. I'd pop her along to the vets (don't forget your clothes peg for your nose! :wink: ) and get them to "squidge" them, or if you use a groomer who is happy to do it ask them next time you take her in

Hi,
I think our cocker Tia may have an enlarged gland. I have seen her 'scooting' across the floor once, and she has a slight fishy smell about her.
What does the gland look like? Tia has a 'lump' about the size and shape of a large almond on her bottom.
Tia is about 8 years old, but I know only a little about her as she was rehomed to us only 8 days ago from the RSPCA.
I'd be grateful for a description!

You can't normally see the anal glands as such Mary - if Tia has a lump, she could have an infection which can happen if the glands get blocked. Best to get her checked out by your vet as infected anal glands can be quite painful for the dog.

She isn't scooting and was spayed in August, she just nibbles.
Perhaps she's just grooming her nether regions!
It always seems to happen when she's excited too.
If it continues, I'll ask the vet.

Hi,
I took Tia to the Animal Hospital today and got her checked out where she met Rolf Harris for the second visit in a row! (We weren't a storyline, but you might see her in the background sometime....)
The vet said that the glands weren't too full but emptied them anyway, but that the skin in that area was thickened probably as a result of allergy. It should feel like the skin on her tummy apparently. I now have to rub cream in for a week to see if that stops the scooting which is just due to her feeling itchy.

Hi Michele,
I don't think so - we met him for the first time only a week ago today. My daughter was sitting on the floor cuddling with her (off school due to Eid celebrations).
Tia is black though. We of course have forgotten to watch the last couple...
