yet another worry
« on: October 09, 2012, 10:57:43 PM »
well today peps has been dry hacking & sounds like she's got fluid on her lungs, flemmy sounding breathing sometimes & did a bit of snoring! First thought was kennel cough but she's had vaccination- but this is pepper......who is likely to get some mysterious strand not covered by it.
So ringing the vets in the morning! We might aswell live there.....

Oh no, you are really going through it at the moment, fingers and paws crossed that she has a good night and it's nothing to worry about

Can dogs still not get kennel cough? Surely there is more than one strain? I don't know just guessing.
The human vaccine only works on one or two strains not all of them, a colleague had the swine flu vaccine yet was still hospitalised with it because she caught a different strain

hope pepper gets better soon x

You're spot on Kalami  ;)

Sounds like it is KC - the KC vaccination is pretty useless imho as it only covers a few strains and the virus mutates all the time  :-\

Worst thing is she probably caught it at her recent visit to the vets - if you do suspect it's KC and take her to the vets then she should be seen at your car and not taken into the surgery as it's highly contagious (and not so bad for healthy adult dogs but for very young pups and elderly or infirm dogs it can be very debilitating)

Two of mine have had kennel cough in the last few weeks.... They sound chesty, and like they are choking. OH reckon they sound like ducks..... It is still possible to get kennel cough after the immunisation as the strain just mutates into a slightly different virus/bacteria.

Hope peps feels better soon. Xxx

Oh oh - if it is KC, how long is it contagious for?  Will this put paid to our prospective meet up?

They are apparently only contagious whilst they have a cough, but I would leave it for a week after this to make sure xxxx

Star had a horrible dry cough; mainly in the mornings. The vet suggested children's cough medicine, which maybe helped a bit.  It wasn't too bad at first, but then it suddenly became a lot lot worse. Really scarey. (She is inoculated against kennel cough.)
Different vet suggested getting her to inhale steam. (Tell me how!!!!)
Then someone suggested Olbas Oil. I put some on a tissue and held it in front of her nose so she had to breathe it in, for about 30 secs.
By the next day, she had improved greatly. I repeated this twice daily for two days, and it completely disappeared.
Not only has the cough gone, her breathing is quieter, and she doesn't snort and snore at night. Fantastic!
There have been a couple of slight recurrences, but at the first sign I give her a sniff, and it's gone. The last time, I wiped some under her chin, so she breathed it in, but couldn't lick it. Worked a treat.
I've recommended this to a couple of people on these boards. Maybe it'll work for you. Hope so.
Only £3:80 a bottle. Miracle cure!!
