Hello :D,
I am hoping for some help please and really appreciate everyone taking the time to read this - many thanks to all!!!
I am 26 and my partner is 27. We live near to Llanelli, South Wales with our rescue cat William, who is 4 and a half years old.
We are renting our 3 bedroom house with garden, but have a letter from out landlord consenting us to have a dog (and our cat) at the property.
We would very much like to welcome into our home a show type cocker spaniel bitch and would prefer to get a rescue bitch, ideally less than 4 years old. Colour is not at all important, The only defining thing for me is I have my heart set on a girl!
I have a lot of dog ownership experience (all rescues) of both pups and dogs, from my parents and grandparents dogs.
My partner is currently studying and I do not work far from home so the dog would be on her own for a max of 3-4 hours on occasions.
We feel we can offer a loving home not far from the beach (1 mile) and some of south wales best walking areas! We look forward to daily walks and weekend expeditions.
We have friends who have a working cocker, labrador and jack russel and hope ours will be 'friends' with theirs (although ours would be a pet!) and enjoy their company.
We are more than willing and plan to attend training classes with the dog, and have already enquired about classes in our area.
We want her to be spayed (we are not interested in having puppies from her) and she would be insured, injected and frontlined just like William is already.
I have been looking now for several months and to be honest, I am finding it very difficult and seem to have hit a brick wall!
I have contacted the kennel club Cocker Spaniel rescue to no avail, despite leaving phone messages, but would be very happy to hear from them!!!
I constantly check the on line forums such as dog pages, dogs blog and cocker spaniels on-line to see what rescue centres have available and are suitable as an only dog.
We would travel pretty much anywhere! Obviously closer would be better, but when we are hoping to be investing in a member of our family for say the next ten years, for the right dog I'd say 4 hours would be no problem. But we would consider more!!!
We have already posted on the dog pages forum and keep a close eye on many tears as it is just down the road but we do not have another dog to meet the requirements for an ex breeding bitch.
I was just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions for us, as if unsuccessful in the near future, I imagine we will have to start looking at buying a pup as the only alternative!
Many thanks for your time,
Rebekah and Chris (+ William!) :D

Hello,
Have you been on to Many Tears site as they have lots of female cockers in at the present moment who are waiting for a loving home like yours, we adopted a puppy farm bitch from them 3 years ago and she is just wonderful.
lots of luck in your search.
-
Many Tears have lots- good luck and let us know!
-
I think the problem is that Many Tears usually want another dog in residence for the puppy farm dogs, but they do occassionaly get ones where they would be more suited to being an only dog.
Its also worthwhile keeping an eye on the Nessr site, whilst they only have working cockers at the moment, they quite often get show cockers too.

they have been on many tears and are looking for a dog suitable for an only dog home - most rescues will only rehome ex-breeding bitches to a home where there is already a dog present...
Good luck in your search :) hope you find your little lady soon :)
-
I have posted on your thread on dp about a 4 month old cocker x girl :D
-
Have you seen this little :luv: http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=71300.0
-
Hi All thanks for your help so far!
Parky (as suggested on our DP thread) is attractive but not quite what we are looking for.......we're very set on a cocker spaniel!
And although Bean is gorgeous he is a boy! bless him. We really would like a girl!
Thanks x
Any more thoughts on available dogs out there?
:)
-
Make sure you register interest with the rescues near you - Many Tears, Four Paws and I think there's another but the name escapes me :-\
Also contact the breed rescue and Spaniel rescues as many cockers don't get advertised anywhere ;) That's not to say there is one waiting for you now, you may have to wait for the right girl for you. Good things come to those who wait though ;)

hello again Jaspersmum! Thanks for your advice.
I have tried to contact the cocker spaniel club rescue - I found that several of the numbers don't work from the website and I tried to contact a co-ordinator and was only able to leave messages! If anyone has any contact numbers for them that work I would be very greatful.
As for other spaniel rescues - does anyone have any suggestions? I have contacted NESSR to see if they can help me.
Thanks again for every ones time and although we are very keen to welcome the new girly, we knew with such specific requirements it may take time! x :-\
-
Good Luck with your search. :D
The only thing i would add is i have 2 girls & 1 boy and can honestly say my boy is so much more loving, cuddly, and easier to please than my girls. :luv: It may be worth considering either sex. :-\
-
Another option is to contact some of the big breeders, as they sometimes rehome their breeding bitches privately. I met someone yesterday who had just got a beautiful little 5 year old (free of charge) from a breeder who no longer used her.
Good luck with your search. :D
-
I know you are looking for a girl but there is a lovely blue roan boy , who is 6, looking for a new home, no real issues and can be an only dog :luv: He is at Lizzies Barn sorry don't know how to cross post ::)
Its located in Kidwelly he is def worth a look.
Try this link and scroll down till you find him his name is Jake :luv:
http://www.dogpages.org.uk/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=12&t=2296
-
Jake has been rehomed - his thread on here has been closed
apart from the ex-breeding bitches more male cockers tend to come up in rescue than females ;)
-
Hello,
I wondered what people thought about rehoming ex breeding bitches direct from breeders?
Thanks,
Rebekah
-
It was something I hadn't thought about until I met the little Cocker yesterday, but I think as long as the breeder isn't actually selling the dog, then it is still considered a rescue dog. :D
-
Thanks.
Is there anything I should ask the breeder(owner)?
I am concerned about the dog getting on with our cat (as I love him dearly!).
William (cat) is ok with dogs. I wouldn't say he was bomb proof, but we have no problems when my friend brings her lab and jack russel round to see us.
Thanks x
-
This rescue in Derby seems to get a few cockers through, some female. The majority are handin's (no ex-breeders) but the cockers go very, very quickly so you would probably need to watch the site every day for changes
http://www.madsods.com/
I almost forgot...these guys have had 2 bitches in this year, but no cockers at the moment

-
Hi Jasper_boy,
Thanks for this info.
I'll keep an eye on those two rescues too!
The list is getting mega long now, but I know it will be worth it! :005:
Thanks again x
-
ah bless! he was a cutie though!! :005:
I have noticed that more boys seem avaiable......I really really want a girl though (Damn it!! lol)
I don't mean to sound thick, but when you say bigger breeders.........................who do you have in mind?
Is it just aim for the most expensive puppies and contact them???
Do people think I am being too specific for a rescue dog?
Thanks all xxx :D
-
Many Tears have just done an update on Vale who is a 4 year old ex-breeder and she may be able to go as an only dog :D
-
Hello,

Hi
I adopted Flo from her breeder 4 years ago after she had been a show dog and then had 2 litters of pups. She was rehomed to me because after her last litter she lost a lot of her coat which affected her continuing show career :-\
I still have a good relationship with her breeder , I was home checked and vetted thoroughly by her and I think it's nice that I know Flo's background and have back up should I need it, just as I would have if I'd bought a pup. I didn't pay anything for her, but the agreement was that she must be spayed which I paid for. ;)
One of her daughters is a COL dog ( Moog) and one of her sons lives a few streets away . She also has a half brother who is a COL dog (Einstein)
Barnaby was from Many Tears and I know nothing aout him really  except that he's gorgeous and I love him so much :luv:
I wouldn't hesitate to rehome from a 'reputable ' breeder who is concerned where her dog goes and continues to want to keep in touch ;)
Good luck with your search
Jann, Flo and Barnaby :-*

Vale at Many Tears looks like she could suit you- and pretty too.
-

Didn't take long, did it?
-
 Any news yet Rebekah ? waiting with baited breath here :005:
:003:
-
Unfortuneatly for us, many tears have already put someone else forward for Vale.
It's a weird feeling....I am a bit gutted but I'm also happy that Vale may have found her forever home. :luv:
I have spoken to a breeder about a bitch she is trying to rehome but looks like someone may have pipped me to the post on that one too.
Will have to wait and see! :D
It's all too much excitement for one day!!! :005:
I just know that when the little lady does come into our lives it'll be soooooooooooo worth the wait x
-
Sorry you seem to have missed out twice there, but I am a great believer in fate and many of this type of thread have started out the same way and ended up with the OP finding their perfect dog :luv: So don't despair I am sure she is out there somewhere waiting for your paths to cross ;)
-
Have pm'd you but it might be the same bitch you've just mentioned. :D
-
:o Oh I'm so sorry, what a disappointment :-\ but I also believe in fate, your girl will come along when the time's right ;)
but I am glad that Vale may have found a new home too :luv:
Have you thought about Virtue and Valentino who Kirstyb is fostering ?? :D

Ditto here. Sorry you must be disappointed, but i truly believe 'things' happen for a reason....i'm sure you will find the right doglet very soon. :shades: :luv:

It was something I hadn't thought about until I met the little Cocker yesterday, but I think as long as the breeder isn't actually selling the dog, then it is still considered a rescue dog. :D
Ex show or breeding dogs re-homed by a breeder are not rescues ;) They are being re-homed carefully by the breeder or owner for a variety of reasons, new owners are vetted in the same way as a new puppy owner would be, lets assume we are talking about reputable caring breeders here  Dogs are rarely " given away " and a nominal charge is made, same as rescue centers do
Approaching breeders is a good idea Rebbecca at least you can get a good idea of how the dog has been looked after, their likes and dislikes and most good breeders are only too happy to offer support and advice.
Good luck in finding the right dog for you
-
Approaching breeders is a good idea. We spoke to several who had dogs/young pups returned to them and who were looking for a home. Although I supose not rescue in the true sense these are dogs that haven't found a forever home and are confused by all the changes and just looking for someone to love them for the rest of their life.
We are Harry's third home and he is just one :'(, but we bought him from the breeder who had taken him back to sell on
After we had found Harry, we were still contacted by some lovely breeders who knew we were looknig and had news of dogs looking for homes so I know sadly there are often dogs returned to the breeder becuase of changes in circumstances etc.
good luck in your search - the right girl will be out there for you and it is sooooo worth the wait to get the right dog ;)
-
:-\ Is Mel too old for you Rebekah?
http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=71486.0
I think she is lovely :luv:
-
I'd have her in an instant, she is gorgeous! :luv:
-
Hi she is gorgeous! and sooooo fluffy!
Without meaning to sound like I am completely shunning the suggeestion....... I think she may be a bit older than we had in mind x
I don't mean that to sound as flippant and ageist as it does! Sorry Mel x :016:
-
Have you thought about Virtue and Valentino who Kirstyb is fostering ?? :D
Wow! two Cockers in one go??? I think that might be a bit too brave! lol!
To be honest i'm not sure we could cope with two at the present time! But it did keep me amused for a while at work today thinking of all the mischief two could get up to!
From what I hear about sock stealing, with two I dont think I'd have any left to wear!!! :005:
-
Just to let you all know, I'm going away for a couple of days to see my friend's new Solid Black working cocker pup Monty aged 14 weeks (ahhhhhhhhh cutie pie! :luv:) so if I dont reply, I haven't disappeared!
Probably be a rush of cockers for rehoming while my back is turned! lol! ::)
Thanks for all your help an interest over the past week! It's been really great! x

Any news while I've been away on the rehoming front?
Any new cocker girlies anyone knows of?
Thanks, Rebekah

What about Lotty at Dogs Friends http://www.dogsfriends.co.uk/ on here too http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=71515.0 she can only go as an single dog and isn't so very old at 7??
-
:luv: Lottie looks lovely :-* Flo will be 7 this year and I don't look on her as old at all :-\ She's as lively as she's ever been :shades:
-
Blue Cross have Zoe who is 2 years and 7 months but must be rehomed with her pal Murphy a springer

Ellie at Hula is reserved but it might be worth contacting them if the meeting doesn't work out
http://www.hularescue.org/the-kennels.html
-
Vale appears to be still available, she doesn't say reserved anyway :-\ Wouldn't harm to give them another call just to see whats happening with the family they had lined up and she can be homed as an only dog ;)
-

7yrs old is a good age! I got Lady as a 7 yr old rescue. She'll be 13 in July!! :luv:
-
Don't loose patience, the right girl will come along.
when i lost my collie cross in january (Kelly) i was looking for a new companion for taz and in particular a labrador. I was due to go and see a 5 month old one which sounded perfect, then on the morning i was due to go and see her the owner changed her mind. The following day, my dad sent me details of a litter of black lab pups locally and i decided to go and see them. As expected they were beautiful, but the icing on the cake for me was that the mum's KC name is "Kelly's Choice" :luv: So it feels like Kelly handpicked Kira for us (my beautiful 5 month old lab).

Still no reserved sign on Vale ;)

excellent news

Broccoli at Many Tears has become re-available as she needs to go as an only dog now
http://www.cockersonline.co.uk/discuss/index.php?topic=69639.0
-
Awww its a shame Brocolli's new home didn't work out but she is a little beauty, could be exactly what you are looking for ;)
-
Broccoli could be what the OP is looking for, but she's being fostered in Kingston, which would be quite a hike from Wales. AA Route Planner reckons on just over three and a half hours - I guess it would depend on the time of day. It could take a lot longer at rushhour. Whaddya think, Rebekah? :D
-
Hi all!
Sorry for my absence - problems with the internet oh joy!
Wow alot has happened on here!
I'm going to have a check with many tears and see whats happening with Vale tomorrow! I've tried checking their website tonight but it doesn't seem to be working (could be my glorious internet!!)
Thanks for all your suggestions, I really do appreciate them all!!!
Black taz - what a lovely story! nice to think that there may have been some input from the other side of the bridge!
Jasper boy - neither of those seem to be available now - oh bum!!! thanks for the heads up!!!
Mooching & Bajoleth - Brocolli is lovely! I'll sneak an enquiry in with many tears tomorrow when i call them about Vale. I don't mind travelling for the right girly!!!
Jann - I've PM'd you and Lottie looks lovely. I've popped a question on her thread about being an only pet! x
-
Well............WE'VE GOT A HOME CHECK TOMORROW AT 1!!!
For Vale from many tears!!!
Little bit scared and very excited!!!
The only small concern we have is we've been told by many tears she has some seperation anxeity.
One step at a time! see how the home check goes first!!!!
-
Wow! Good luck with the homecheck! :D
Are you at home all day and able to deal with any separation anxiety?
-
Hope it all goes well x
-
;) got your pm Rebekah :D
All paws and fingers crossed here for you :clapping:
Jann Flo and Barnaby ;)
-
My partner is at home all day apart from two hours on a friday for the forseeable future as he is at uni but studies from home the rest of the time. This is open to possible change in the future but hopefully not much.
As for dealing with it..... I guess it depends what extent it is at, as there is obviously slight anxiety to the extreme of wrecking the house when you go out!!!
We're not shy of the work and always knew that the rescue bitch would come with baggage of some kind. I dont really know what to think/expect. I cant honestly say we have lots of money to spend with a behaviourist. I had planned on puppy/puppy style classes to help us bond as a family and insurance for vet bills, but i know that a behaviourist can get expensive very quickly (my mums last dog needed to see one).
And my other thought is it fair on Chris (partner) if he does need to pop out and the dog cant go to have to deal with it on his own if it's really bad?
For me worst case scenario would be that it doesn't work out and she has to go back. that is my biggest fear. not just cause it would break my heart but i dont want to mess the poor dog around. she's the most important thing in this!!!
What I was thinking is have the home check and see what happens? If we find out more and think we cant cope, I think we should say so.
-
good luck with your home check :D
-
Good Luck today :D
-
Hope it all goes ok today and the SA turns out to be something that you feel able to deal with as well :)
-
What I was thinking is have the home check and see what happens? If we find out more and think we cant cope, I think we should say so.
That's a good idea, they won't pressure you to take her if she isn't 100% right for you. Good luck with it all. :D
-
Fingers crossed all is going well with the home check! :D
-
 Is there any news yet  :003:
-
hello how did it go come on we r waitin with baited breath lol
-
Well.......The home check went fab!!!
TBH i didn't really know what to expect.
Jan (the lady who came) said our garden was lovely and secure (all 5 foot + fences and no access at all to the front of the property) and was happy with where we are hoping our girly will sleep (at the foot of our stairs - we have a largeish hall way).
We just have to wait now to hear from many tears.
I dont really know what to expect now or how long we will wait but it was lovely just to hear that our home is suitrable for a dog. I was quite chuffed!!!
Couldn't resist buying a dog toy from Tesco. It's a ball covered with a green frog toy. Very cute. Hope I'm not tempting fate but it felt like I have achieved something. I don't want to buy bedding etc until we know for sure she is coming!
-
Glad things went well!!
-
It says reserved next to her name on the many tears website but we are trying to work out if that is resrved for us as we haven't heard anything!?
Maybe i should give them a call today to find out?
-

Wouldn't do any harm to ring and then you can ask a few questions about preparing for what you can do to help alleviate the SA ;)
Good Luck, one step sorted and hope the rest is successful. The last home falling through was obviously meant to be for you and Vale :luv:
-
Pleased to hear your Homecheck went well. :D
There's no harm in ringing MT to enquire....i would be like you on tenterhooks waiting to know. :shades: ;)
-
:cool4:
Great news, ;) and I can't see that they would be doing a homecheck with you if she was reserved to someone else Rebekah :D
In the unlikely event you don't get Vale then at least you've had your check and can act quickly when another girl comes along ;)
I know how excited you must be, I was the same when I got Barnaby :luv:
-
Fantastic news- phone them!!!
