08-06-10 Nimble is a beautiful 12 week old female cocker spaniel. She has been returned to the breeder who has given her to us to re home as she is deaf. This dear sweet girl is disorientated at the moment, circling a lot. She is a happy girly who comes up for a fuss and a cuddle and so deserves a home and person to call her own.

OOOOOOOOO  she is gorgeous  :luv:

Sorry I am gonna defend the breeder here - at least by handing her to the rescue the breeder will have the safe knowledge that who the rescue let have her will be the correct owner for her and so she will not be passed from pillar to post - and the rescue will most prob have more knowledge on deaf dogs than the breeder so will be able to find her a forever home and give the new owner all the information and help with having a deaf dog

Now if only I could have another dog I would snap this one up as she is gorgeous  :luv: , but I can't  :'(

Hope she finds her forever home real soon with someone who can devote the time to her that she needs

Not sure I agree with that comment about the breeder, the breeders may well not be a puppy farm but may not be able to keep her for a variety of reasons (not having the time that is needed to train a deaf pup being one) thre are lots of more terrible and irresponsible things they could have done with her. Many Tears will ensure she gets the best home possible so not such a bad thing really. Not sure I could have taken her back to the breeder though if she were my pup :-\

So the owner is bad for not wanting/have the time to train a deaf pup but the breeder isn't? I have no experience of dog breeding other than what I have read on here but I would have thought the breeder has just as much responsibility for the dog as the new owner. Every new member that mentions breeding from their dog gets informed of the importance of being responsible for the pups if the new owners can't/won't keep them. I have no experience in training deaf dogs either so is this the responsible thing to do? (and that was a genuine question not a sarcastic comment  ;))

Incidentally, our experience with Jeff is that if you've got another dog to lead the deaf one, most of the time you'd never realise the difference. Please will someone rehome her pronto before I can't stop myself   ph34r

Not quite what I was getting at :-\ If I were the breeder I would have kept her, If I were the new owner I would have kept her IF I thought that were the best thing for the pup. I don't blame the breeder or the owner for doing a responsible thing, I know MT will find her the best home possible. The breeder is responsible for the long term welfare of any pups she breeds and I am sorry if you don't agree but I think the breeder has been responsible in handing her in to a well respected rescue centre that will find her the very best home :-\

I see what you're saying. I suppose me calling the breeder cruddy was harsh, I'd just been looking at the ex breeding girls and was getting a bit angry.

But ( ph34r) I think with the overwhelming amount of dogs in rescue and being PTS as there is no space for them then anyone considering breeding must take things like this into consideration.

As for the breeder/owner argument, Jeff was returned to his breeder the day after he went to his new home - no-one realised he was deaf until he left the litter. The new owners were first time dog owners and had no other dog, so it wouldn't have been the best home for him. The breeder contacted the CSS which is how I found out about him; if we hadn't had him she would have kept him. It does seem a shame this little soul has had to go to a rescue, so has effectively had three homes in her short little life :'(,  and couldn't just stay with the breeder until a new home was found (by MT), but then she may be from a farm I guess.

Just to reiterate, training a deaf puppy really is no harder then training a hearing one, you just need a little more patience, especially with toilet training (you can't say "no" to it, so have to be ready to jump up and move the pup as soon as it squats  :lol2:), another dog, a secure garden and good, secure off-lead walks (more for peace of mind than anything; if either dog was to stray onto a road it would be Annie not Jeff  ::)). Jeff is actually better at recall than Annie (as long as he's looking at you and not sniffing), and doesn't go nearly as far away.

Hi everyone  :D

My name is Adrienne and I am a fosterer for Many Tears. Nimble  :luv: is coming on foster to me tomorrow so I can let you know how she is getting on!

I was recommended Cockers Online as an excellent source of information for all things cocker hence my registration. Although I have fostered numerous dogs already, Nimble is my first cocker and also my first deaf dog, so would welcome any advice from those who have experience of deaf dogs.

We believe that she may not be totally deaf but obviously I will assess that once she is here. She is also in the habit of circling, which is something I need to deal with, hopefully this could just be because she is stressed and worried :'(

I have 3 dogs of my own here to help her, Tilly an Irish Lab, Nala a MT ex breeding Weimeraner (failed foster  :shades:!) and Fifi a MT ex puppy farm 6 month old cavvy puppy (also a failed foster! :005:).

Hopefully Fifi will be a nice playmate for her and Tilly and Nala calming influences.

By the way for any of you thinking of applying for her, we are in Dursley, Gloucestershire. ;)
Adrienne

Welcome to COL by the way and can we have more pics of her and an update how she settles in with you and your lot please pretty please - I hope she is gonna find her forever home real soon, and who knows you could be a FF for the 3rd time  :shades:

Hello and welcome to COL Adrienne (eloisecherry). :D
You will find this forum very helpful and friendly.
I SO admire people like you who foster dogs.  I would love to do it myself but am not in a position yet (I work part-time).
I wish you the best of wishes with little Nimble and it would be lovely if you could post photos of her as she gains confidence.
I am sure a home will be found quickly for this little poppet.
Bless you for giving these little dogs a second chance.  :bigarmhug:

Hello Adrienne, I have Jeff (Mutt n Jeff) and the most remarkable thing about having a deaf puppy for me has been how unremarkable it has been! He's really not that different. The only differences I  have noticed are:
- Toilet training - as mentioned, you have to be a lot quicker off the ball and it takes a bit longer!
- He is more clingy than any of the hearing dogs I've had. He follows me everywhere; even stares through the crack in the loo door and waits until I've finished! However, this may be his personality or because we have mollycoddled him more rather than because he's deaf.
- You do need to treat a deaf dog more like a toddler - try and minimise as many risks as possible, as you can't call it or attract it's attention as you can another dog.
- Get the puppy used to referring to you as much as possible so that it looks to you for instructions. Lots of cuddles and treats! You probably will find yourself giving more attention to the deaf puppy than you will your other dogs, but I think that's necessary as it will need lots of reassurance and physical contact.
- Don't leave her alone if she has fallen asleep when you're there - she may panic and get a bit frantic. Give her a gentle tap on the bum to wake her.
- In fact, I would never leave Jeff alone full stop. He always at least has Annie with him.
- Devise some really basic hand signals and stick to them. Come, wee, good, no, sit. Use exaggerated facial expressions.

You are SO lucky having such a beautiful little girl. Give her all the love, cuddles and contact you possibly can, and you will be rewarded with the most amazing companion ever.

Hopefully Becky and Wilson will see this and have more to add  ;)

Hi Helen,

Thank you for your lovely comment about my girls, especially Nala. She is a committed sun worshipper now that she has been released from her horrible shed  >:( and always finds the best position to catch some rays!

The only reason I mentioned the threads was because I was asked to do one by one of the MT Staff, so was really pleased to see that all of the dogs are already listed - that's really kind of you and your members - thank you.

Thank you Puppy Annie too for your helpful advice.

My girls  all follow me everywhere too (the days of privacy in the toilet are long gone!) so hopefully little Nimble will also just tag along and follow their lead and get into our routine.

As we foster our house is pretty safe and all valuables and breakables are well out of reach so it's puppy friendly.

I've fostered a few puppies now (I fostered Fifi and her 4 brothers and sisters too) so will start with the every hour on the hour toilet training routine with masses of praise and over exaggerated actions and facial expressions when she goes.

I read somewhere that people put bells on their collars - is this worthwhile do you think?

It's not something I've felt we needed, but then Jeff never goes very far so I guess it depends on the dog  :dunno:

Bite inhabition can be difficult with a deaf puppy. My friend has a deaf dally and she just had to teach that teeth are not acceptable rather than the prefered method of teaching control.

Loads of socialisation is a good idea as they have to learn to respond to a dog body lagauge without the noise feedback (growling, barking, yelping). But watch her around young and nervous dogs as she wont be able to respond to a yelp from another dog.

There were also issues with her knocking things from the table. Whereas another dog would get frightened by the noise a deaf dog doesnt get this negative feedback.  >:(

Good luck

OMG!  She is so gorgeous!  I want her!  I'd love another deaf cocker but I really don't have the money for another one right now!   :'(  But if I did I would be straight on the phone begging them to let me have her!  :luv:

I put a bell on Isla's collar, She will sometimes run into the bushes out of sight so it's just so I can tell where she is!  To be honest she doesn't really need it now but it was really useful when she was a pup as I was terrified she'd get lost and I wouldn't be able to find her!

We also found bite inhibition more difficult with her but not impossible, we play fight with her now using our hands and she mouths you and always very gently!

I'd have another deaf pup in a shot!  I really would, it's so rewarding to train them!  Isla came 1st in an agility show the other week and I've honestly never been so proud!

Hi everyone,

Just a little update for you on the gorgeous Nimble who we have called Ava  :luv: :luv:

She was so distressed on the journey home bless her, constantly circling and crying  :'( But the minute that I lifted her out of her crate and cuddled her, she completely relaxed and we've had a lovely day with her.

She loves her cuddles and playing with toys and she and Fifi (my 6 month old cav) have had some lovely games of chase and tag. She hasn't cried once since we got home and only circles to sit or lie down.

She is a little wobbly and un-cordinated on her paws but this in no way holds her back from anything that she wants to do and she is perfectly happy.

I do also think that she can hear some things as she responds toa whistle, hand clapping or a squeaky toy.

We are all head over heels in love with her already, she is VERY,  VERY special!! :luv: :luv: :D

Here are some more pics to tempt you:

Fingers crossed for you!

If you want to read up on deaf dogs there's a great forum on D for dog website about deaf dogs and also the deaf dalmation rescue has a great page on hand signals you can use!

Also if you have any questions about raising a deaf pup then just PM me I'll be more than happy to help!

My hat goes off to all you fosterers out there.  You're doing a great job.

It's easy to get depressed about the rescue/unwanted dog situation in this country at the moment but sometimes we need to realise also just how far we've come.  In my experience, many years ago the breeder would have had the puppy put down as a matter of course.

I'm sorry Henshallowboys didn't get the pup, but the right dog is waiting for them somewhere in the future.

I know this is totally different to deaf puppies, but our last 3 dogs went stone deaf in old age.  It made no difference as we automatically started doing hand signals without being aware of it, and they automatically responded.
