Title: Keep Your Fingers Crossed!
Post by: tiggerbabe on January 12, 2005, 07:45:23 PM
Hi there!

Well, our search to re-home a Cocker is progressing nicely!

I phoned our local Cocker Spaniel Club representative yesterday to ask if she was aware of any older Cockers that needed rehoming, as me and my 11yr old were looking to take one on.  We have been thinking about the situation long and hard for ages now, but because we have a 12yr old cat, we felt that getting a young bouncy puppy was not a good option for us - or the cat!  (We've had dogs in he past, and she gets on better with dogs than cats, but she is a bit older now!)  :(

We are not looking for a show dog or a breeding bitch, just a family companion to make our lives complete again.  :)

She was not aware of any that needed help at the moment, but put me in touch with a local breeder who might know of someone who could help out.

To cut a long story short, the breeder has a 1yr old boy who is possibly too tall for showing and may be looking for a new home for him.

She is going to have him checked over by a friend who shows Cockers tonight to see what she thinks, and if he is not suitable for the showring, then she will give me a buzz tomorrow to arrange to come and meet us!  :D

We are so excited we can hardly think straight!   :P

I have to try to keep calm though in case it all falls through at the last minute - then I suppose it just wasn't meant to be.......

But please - keep your fingers crossed for us!  ;)

Hi tiggerbabe,
I'm new to this chatting on line business, but just wanted to say don't worry about your 12 year old cat.  My Pinky was 18 when we introduced a 5month old Cocker into her life.  She sulked for a few weeks but if you look at the photo I've just posted to the rogues gallery you will see that she even shared a bed with him eventually.  She had been an 'only one' until then.
Good luck in your search.

PollyKay

Thats good to know - thanks!

I used to have a Lurcher called Zara and my cat used to play with her "beard"!!

My cat was gutted when Zara died and was in obvious mourning for weeks afterwards.

We tried to get her another cat for company as she was getting older - but she turned into the cat from hell and, we had to take the new cat back to the Cat & Dog home!  :(

We'll see what happens if I am blessed with a new Cocker! ;)

Nope - still waiting on THAT phone call - story of my life!!  ;)

She said she would call me back tonight, but her bitch had a litter of pups 3 days a go, so she will be rushed off her feet!  ;)

Looks like another sleepless night for me!!  :D

Don't know about the glass, might not stop at one - purely for medicinal nerve calming purposes of course!  :P

Well, just thought I would let you all know that we have been unsuccessful this time  :(

The breeder had the dog checked and it seems he may be good for showing after all so she is going to keep him for the meantime (he is only 1yr old so still has a little bit of growing to do).  She was really nice about it and was sorry for building up our hopes - she has kept my details in case her circumstances should change in the future  :(

I am really gutted - but as I said in an earlier post, it obviously wasn't meant to be this time.

I have been back in touch with a CSC rescue rep from the Eastern side of Scotland who I was advised to contact should the breeder pull out.  She seemingly gets a much higher number of older Cockers available for rescue as there are a lot more breeders in the North & East of Scotland for some reason!

So, once again - it's fingers crossed for us!  ;)

Sorry to hear this didn't work out for you.  Where do you live?  Have you ever looked on DogPages (http://www.DogPages.org.uk) to try to find a doggy?  It's a rescue site & Cockers come up for rehoming quite often.  There was one a couple of weeks ago looking for a new home in Scotland, he was a working Cocker though & very lively.

Hi!

Thanks for all your words of encouragement - they have been very much appreciated!  :)

Well, it seems fate is throwing me in all directions as I have had more possible good news from another CSC rescue lady!  ;)

She possibly has a Golden boy, 3yrs old coming in to her who she says is an absolute dream with kids, cats, great in the house, not destructive.....but has one bad point..... :(

He does not like other dogs when he is out walking and barks wildly and tries to run at them - she says that this is something that could be easily be rectified by going to behaviour classes.  This is something that I would have done anyway - but does anyone have any experience of this?  How easy is it to "rectify"?  :(

My son Paul really wanted to do Agility with our new dog, but if I could not sort out the behaviour problem, this would not be a possibility.

Paul really, really, really wants a Golden cocker - but I was not particularly bothered about colouring as they are just coming to be part of the family - not for showing, breeding etc.

Can anyone offer me some advice - the rescue lady wants me to phone her back tomorrow night to let me know if the dog has been brought into her.  She is giving me first refusal if he is!  :D

Help!!!!  :(

If it were me, I think I would be interested ;) Out of all the problems a dog can have, that one isn't so huge. I would also have thought that with hard work and patience, it could be rectified relatively easily. Maybe if (or should that be when ;) ) you go to meet him, maybe the rescue lady could take you out on a wlak with him so that you can see for yourself how bad it is.  It might be worthwhile to begin with a one-to-one trainer and then progress onto training class. With these sorts of problems, its better to progress slowly rather than throw him in at the deep end.

Failing all that, just send him to me - he'll fit in just fine with my delinquents

Have just found a really useful page on aggressive dogs (fear related aggression) which is what it sounds as though this golden boy is suffering from.

http://www.doggiedoor.com/aggressi.shtml (http://www.doggiedoor.com/aggressi.shtml)

I did say to the rescue lady that it sounded as though this dog had suffered some event in its life that was making him fearful when near other dogs - and she agreed and said that with training and time it could be controlled.  :)

I hope so - for whoever takes him to their new forever home

Once again - I will keep you all posted!

not so sure it`s fear related as my dog has that and he`s fine around other dogs and is very submissive to them so never gets into any fights be they minor or not, infact he loves other dogs

Hi,

Well I will find later tonight how things are with the Golden boy.  I have to phone the CSC Rescue at 8ish.

I have been reading up on all types of aggression today (got a couple of books from the library  ;) ) and that has helped me out a bit!

I did a search on Yell.com for the nearest behavioural specialist to me should I need their help - and the only one in the area lives about a 5 minute walk from me!  Funny the things you find out!  :D

I saw the 3 girls at Many Tears as I have them on my "favourites" from a while back.  They do such good work there taking all those poor puppy farm dogs away from those pitiful existences.

Anyway - will let you know later how I get on  ;)

Thanks Tiggerbabe  :)

Only the cockers are mine, don't think I'd cope with four dogs.........three maybe one day, but not four  :P

Morgan is, at this moment, sitting beside me with one side trimmed perfectly (well as good as it gets with me on the other end of the scissors  :P  ) and the other side a scraggy mess    He got fed up last night and wandered of somewhere that the crazy woman with the scissors couldn't find him  :D

Let us know how it goes  :D

Thanks - I am definately not giving up that is for sure, as Lizzy said the right dog is out there somewhere  ;)

It is hard though  :(

I live in Scotland so the Many Tears dogs are quite far away, and being ex puppy farm dogs I would maybe biting off more than I could chew.  I don't know anyone that has ever had an ex-puppy farm dog that I could ask for their experience or opinion?

I don't know if anyone on here has experience of this?  Perhaps if you have you could PM me?

I would love to be the "one" that could offer one of those girls a happy home, but having had a rescue dog in the past that suffered from severe Separation Anxiety, I don't know if these poor souls would tend to suffer from this once in a new loving home.

The last thing one of these girls needs is to go somewhere then not to settle in.  :(

I think they need someone who has experience of re-homing an ex-puppy farm dog........but I could be wrong!

All comments gratefully received!  :(

Sorry you've not had any luck this time either, Tiggerbabe  :(  Just need to keep looking, eh.  I'm sure there's a dog out there somewhere for you.

Those girls in Many Tears really do deserve loving homes.  I would absolutely love to have one of them. Even printed off pics to show Eric but it didn't work.  He's sticking rigidly to his no more dogs.......yet, rule

Good luck for the next time!  :)

Hi,

I live in a little village near Beith in Ayrshire - I moved here in September and I love it to bits!  I wish I'd moved years ago!  :D

Surrounded by hills, lochs etc etc - but no muddy feet tagging along on our walks yet :(  (apart from my 11yr olds that is!)

Another thing I was thinking - an ex-puppy farm dog would not be used to cats either would they as they have usually not even been house trained let alone introduced to kids and other animals! :(

Bless them  :(

Well, the saga continues!

I received a telephone call from the breeder (that I was in touch with at the beginning of this thread) this evening.

She was checking to see whether I had managed to find a dog since we last spoke, so obviously my answer was "no"!

Long story short - a guy that she sold 2 dogs to a couple of years ago is not able to give them the time they need anymore as his mother is suffering badly from Dementia and his wife has depression.  As a result he is spending long hours in the house unable to leave and take the dogs out as much as they need.  :(

The breeder thought of me and said that it was coincidence that I was looking for a dog at the same time as this guy was needing help!  She is not expecting me to take both dogs (who are 4yrs old) but will phone the guy back and tell him that I am still looking.  :D   :D

So, once again, FINGERS CROSSED!!!

Hi. Hope things work out and you get your dog. My mum got a little girl from a breeder who no longer wanted her. She is a sweetheart but has had alot of problems as she was really nervous and not house-trained at all. I have a young cocker male who I got as a puppy. He gets on very well with one of my cats and will lie for ages chewing his ears lovingly. Unfortunately he is just two enthusiatic for our other cat ,but he just tries to avoid Barneys affectionate advances.
Good luck!

Hi Tiggerbabe, ive only just caught up with this thread but i really hope there is a little cocker out there for you and perhaps one of these boys are just for you. whatever the circs i always get a bit upset when i hear about dogs having to be rehomed, it must be so traumatic for them but its great to know that they will be coming into a home that is understanding, loving and considered all the options.

i really hope this one works out for you and you get your lovely boy to complete the family!!

Hi there!

Just an update since I haven't been on this thread for a few days!  :D

I am still waiting to hear from the breeder - last contact was last Tuesday (25th).
 :(

I phoned her to see if the dogs owner had been back in touch with her to let her know if he was going ahead with handing his dogs back to her or not.  At that point she still hadn't heard, but expected a call that night or the next day as she knew the guy wanted to get the matter sorted asap.  He had also not decided if he was handing back one or both of the dogs.  She said that she would phone me as soon as she knew anything more.

I am still waiting and don't want to call her again as I don't want to appear pushy!

But at the same time, if this is going to fall through as well, then I would like to keep on the ball and get back onto Cocker Rescue.

On a more positive note - I am pushing forward with setting up my dogwalking business and am just in from my Business Navigation course.  I have a meeting with my Business Advisor on Thursday morning (8.30 so I can go in before work - it is amazing the amount of docs/dentist appointments I have had recently!!)   ;)

The only thing I am sickening for is "work related boredom!"  :D

Well, I could resist the urge no more!!  I had to phone the breeder tonight!!   :D

Got through to her husband as she had "her hands full" with the pups!  ;)

The poor guy who is surrendering his dogs (we think) has still not made the final decision and the breeder does not want to phone him as he is under a lot of pressure at the moment with everything that is going on at home.  :(  Poor guy.

The two Cockers are both blue roan dogs, and are seemingly absolutely fantastic boys who have been together since pups.  The breeders husband remembers when they guy came in to buy them as pups a few years ago and he said that he was over the moon and still loves his dogs to bits.  He just can't give them the time anymore.  He was in floods of tears when he originally phoned her to ask if she could find a home for them.  :(

I was on the phone gabbing to the breeders hubby for ages - they have 17 Cockers in their house at the moment (7 of them are pups though!!).  One of their girls is in Crufts soon!  He was telling me all about his other girls/boys who range in age from 2 - 12!  :P

To top it all off - he has invited me and Paul to come for a visit anytime to meet them and their extended family!  They only live about a 10 minute drive from me, so it took me all my restraining efforts not to jump in the car there and then!    :D  :D

He says that as soon as they hear back from the guy they know that I am here and there is a home waiting for the them.   :P

I feel a lot better about it now, and will be patient however long it takes.

The best things come to those who wait!  ;)

Post by: tiggerbabe on February 04, 2005, 09:12:18 PM
No news yet Sheila!  But no news is good news, right?  ;)

I am going to take them up on their offer of visiting them though, so I think me and Paul may do that tomorrow.  It will be nice to put faces to the voices and to see all those gorgeous Cockers! :D

It will also give them a chance to let them see that we are still really interested as they only have my phone number so far - and I could be anyone!

The only thing I am really worried about now though is that if I do get accepted to re-home one or both of these boys - would the guy that I am rehoming them for be looking for £100's of pounds (considering he did buy them from this breeder, albeit 4 years ago)?  Or will he just be looking for the comfort of knowing that they have been given a loving home?

I am fully expecting to have to pay something, but as we originally were going through Cocker Rescue I had a rough idea of what I would be expected to pay - but as this is via the breeders themselves I am not sure where I stand?

I don't object to having to pay - I just don't know how this works, and I don't want to ask the breeder in case she thinks "if she is worrying about paying to get the dogs, then she maybe can't afford to keep them", which is not the case!

I think I am just feeling a bit delicate after having all these other disappointments!

Has anyone had any experience of this - it is really stressing me out!  :(  Mind you, I worry about EVERYTHING!

Thanks for listening to me rambling...

I hope you have a lovely time meeting all those gorgeous cockers if you go tomorrow.
Having personal contact with the breeder will be really good I think.

I don't have any experience about rehoming myself, but I would have thought that anyone who cared enough about their dogs to realise that they needed to be rehomed wouldn't be looking for lots of money. It seems their main concern is the dogs welfare.

Good luck for tomorrow and maybe after you have chatted for a while you will feel it's alright to ask about money. I think you will be able to gauge that best when you have met and talked to the breeder.

I will have my fingers crossed for you.x

Well, Paul and I went to see the breeder and her troops today!  When we got there all their gorgeous dogs were running around in the massive back garden having a ball!  :D

We sat in the house with the breeder and her hubby and we had a long chat (sounding us out!!  But I wouldn't have expected anything less!)  She took us up to see the pups too - they are 4 weeks old tomorrow and little bundles of fluff!

Well, I am VERY happy to report some fantastic news for a change............  ;)

The guy that needs his two dogs re-homed has still not been in touch, but, the breeder has a bitch which is now being bullied by her sister right out of the blue, but it seems to be getting worse as time goes on.  She is afraid that it might get out of hand and the poor thing might end up with a sore face or worse!  So, she asked us if we would be interested in giving her a home instead!

She brought her girl into the house and we spent about an hour or so with her chatting away and getting Cocker cuddles all the time!  The breeder said that she could see how much more relaxed the dog was when she was away from the others and she didn't think there would be any problem with her settling in.  She was quiet impressed that Paul and I are very outdoor types and said that the dog would be in her element!

She is just coming up for 6, and her name is Sophie!  She is a small black and white beauty and we have fell totally in love with her already!  She is absolutely gorgeous - she was lying on top of Paul within minutes getting her belly rubbed!

She is coming to stay with us next weekend for a trial run - to see how she settles with the cat.  The breeder is giving me a loan of a crate for the weekend too as she is used to sleeping in one of them - just until I get time to buy one in.

I am really flattered as it was obvious that the breeder and her hubby are very attached to their dogs and they said that this was the first time that they had even had to think about rehoming one of that age - so I think if she goes it will be hard for them too.  :(

But for me - it's a case of BRING ON FRIDAY NIGHT!!!  :D

I'm soooooo pleased for you tiggerbabe & for Sophie too.  I hope it all goes well on Friday.  If Sophie's used to being crated it will help with a lot of the settling in problems, she'll have somewhere to retreat to get away from the cat if she feels it's necessary.  I look forward to seeing pics of Sophie very soon.

Congratulations.

If you restrict where the new dog goes at first and allow the cat a safe haven there shouldn't really be a problem (and of course keep the cat in for a while).

Hi there!

Sorry, Sophie is 6 yrs old - but she doesn't look or act it!  She is gorgeous and bubbly!

I think I will change her name to Asti - just kidding!!

She just looks like a Sophie - if you know what I mean!

I am not too worried about her meeting my cat - it has always worked in the past with my other dogs!   ;)

The main thing that I am worried about now is that she will fret being away from her Cocker brothers/sisters/Mum etc and that she will start to bark to try to call for them in some way or other  :(   I know that I am worrying about something that may never happen, but this opportunity means so much to me that I just want everything to work out!

If we get to keep her, I am planning  to take her out for 45mins to 1hr in the morning before I get ready for work, then give her a small breakfast when we get back.  My son will then take her out for a quick "freshen up"  :D  just before school.

When I get back in the afternoon she will get approx another hours walk before dinner.

Does this sound ok to you guys - bearing in mind this is my first Cocker!  ;)

Thanks for that!

As I say, it will all depend on how things go at the weekend with Sophie!  I really hope everything goes well - but I suppose only time will tell.  ;)

We have been buying things on the web all week for our new arrival whether it be Sophie or another Cocker!  :D

Whereabouts in Scotland are you based - could you PM me the details??
