Title: Pictures of Clipped Cockers Please?
Post by: fr1day on January 21, 2012, 10:54:41 AM
I'm finally to the point of considering clipping my female. I always swore I wouldn't when we first got her, but we had her spayed back in July and it's now getting harder and harder to keep her looking nice. I'm still a bit hesitant cause I don't want her to look like a shorn sheep, and my OH keeps insisting we should just stick to the Coat King, but of course he doesn't do any of the grooming  ;)

So I was wondering if people would post photos of their cockers(s) that are clipped? I always wonder when I see photos people have posted on here whether or not they're hand-stripped or clipped. Might also help me convince the OH that even if we clip our girl she won't end up looking like a naked mole rat!

Thanks in advance, I'm so looking forward to the photos!

This link shows a couple of pictures of Alice, a spayed girlie who has been clipped on her back, but retains feathering on legs, tummy and ears.  I personally think it has been done sensitively and she still looks like a Cocker.  I take her to someone who breeds and shows cockers who is happy to clip her for me and clearly understands the breed and the 'look' I want to preserve.  I find that with her clipped out like this I only need comb her through thoroughly every other day to keep matts at bay and make her comfortable.  HTH.

Here's William :luv:

He's castrated, which ruined his previously silky coat. After battling with thinning scissors, coat king and a little bit of clipping for several years I finally gave in and had him partly clipped a couple of years ago by a lady who shows, breeds and grooms Cockers.

In the photo the feathering on the backs of his front legs looks a bit short to me, so I keep it a bit longer now. I take him to the groomer every 6 months for a proper tidy up (I'm rubbish at doing paws) and a bath. In between times I use clippers and thinners to tidy him up and it's a lot less effort than before he was clipped.

What colour is your girl? If she's roan her clipped areas will end up looking a bit spotty, but the look will depend on how much roaning she has and what colour. William is more white than roan so it doesn't notice much on him.

I'll try and find a photo of Charlie clipped. My groomer (who is his and Dexter's breeder) clips his back and head, trims and tidys his legs, feet, feathers, tail and ears, so he still looks like a cocker - just a very tidy one  :luv:

I will probably get her to hand strip Dexter, his coat has always been much softer and silkier, and he loves being brushed.

How old was he when he was castrated? Toby is now 1 and has a silky coat and I know when to have him done?

How old was he when he was castrated? Toby is now 1 and has a silky coat and I know when to have him done?

William was castrated at 15 months because he had a retained testicle which was in a really tricky place (somewhere up near a kidney :o). His coat stayed fairly silky for about 6 to 9 months afterwards but then became impossible to hand strip.

If he hadn't been testicularly challenged :005: I wouldn't have had him castrated.

I would have only had the retained one removed, then his coat would not have been affected, my friend, had this done with her male, a few yrs ago know

And after

That was her first ever clip and i wasn't that keen on it,her fluffy head is my fault though,i couldn't bring myself to let the groomer do it  ph34r
We have changed groomers now,and i keep her really short,i have even parted with "most" of her eyelashes and her fluffy head  :shades:

My little girl looks a lot like your Ruby at the moment, except the fur on her legs has gone really thick and woolly. She's a dark blue roan, so I had already wondered if she would go all spotty looking when clipped. Bless her, it doesn't help that her brother is an ex-show that we rehomed recently, and he has the most beautiful coat ever! Have managed to keep him looking super with just a Coat King, so in comparison she looks like the poor, ugly little sister  :005:

I know that the shorter you clip them, the longer they can go in between trips to the groomer. But if I buy some clippers myself, would it be possible to leave the hair longer on the back and upper hocks so it looks more like it has been handstripped or done with a Coat King?

I'm loving the photos so far, JennyBee your Brodie is gorgeous  :luv: I so want a chocolate roan for our next addition!

We ummed and ahhed about clipping him , took the plunge and never looked back easier to clean and look after especially as he's always in the river and woods , smells better too , I never went to a groomer just did it myself with some £20 clippers took about 2 hours to clip him (aching back) , first few attempts were maybe not that good but getting better with every clip , just bought some andis 2 speed clippers and they're great , call me tight (the wife does) but I refuse to pay a groomer £30-£40 every 6 weeks.

Lady - Orange Roan, fully clipped because we get really extreme heat and humidity here and she cant cope with it if we leave her fur even slightly long.

Just noticed this thread and thought I would post a couple of pictures of Rosie.

Rosie is now 11 years old and is spade and has always had a very heavy coat I clipped her from when she was about 4 years old for a couple of years 2/3 times a year and then decided to grow her coat out again and with a combination of Micky combes and Coat Kings I now have her with her back natural and just clip her legs and arm pits.

I must admit I prefer her how she is now

Aljeana - Rosie is so gorgeous!  :luv: :luv:

Think I'm going to persist for the moment with the Coat King... May have to shave her all over one day, if ever I move back to Texas. For the minute I think I'll just have to come to terms with the fact that I'm not profficient enough to make her look as good as her brother. Bless my wee minx, if only her mother wasn't so vain about her looks!  :lol2:

I must admit it was a very hot summer when I decided to clip Rosie as she had a very heavy coat I was amazed how long it took me to clip her down the first time.  After the last time I clipped her I started straight away using a fine comb and a coat king so that I never let it get so thick again.

Now her back coat is long but silky and quite fine so really pleased and easy to manage

I must admit that I prefer cockers to look like cockers and we kept Holly and Henry with their show coats at first but we do a lot of serious walking, and my two are real mud magnets.  So over time I've taken them to the groomers and i've just got them done shorter and shorter and now we have them both all fully clipped off a la shaun sheep  ph34r

I realise that they do look a little funny but hey ho it's practical and we now take them to the groomers every 6-8 weeks for bath and full clip.  I do like to keep their ears long though so they thin them out and keep the length.

Misha, Roly & Lexi are clipped.  I've let her coat grow out this winter (just in case we had a big freeze like last year) and she looks a bit like a poodle and I am desperate to clip her (most likely this coming weekend).  What I would advise is don't clip the ears, not even part way down as some groomers will do.  Wherever you clip will curl much much more, I don't clip their ears at all and they have all remained relatively smooth - they are quite full and I do trim the length and thin with thinning scissors.  Any bits that seem to stay smooth I leave.

This is Misha when she was first clipped, the 2nd picture is a bit more recent.

Roly is unneutered, with fine white bits and wooly brown bits!  He doesn't have much in the way of skirts.  Roly when first clipped and the 2nd from last year.

I had Charlie clipped the other day for the first time as he was castrated a few months ago due to a retained testicle or else he wouldn't have been done. I knew that there was a good chance his coat would go abit wild  after castration so had prepared myself to have to have him clipped as I would prefer to keep their show coats. I must admit though, Charlie looks really nice now, he's still got his feathering and looks alot tidier so was very pleased. I will try and get some pictures of him tomorrow to add on here :D

Don't worry, if its only been done once it'll be ok, its just when you clip them on a regular basis.  I've let Misha's coat grow out in anticipation of very cold weather and her back is as curly as a poodle.  :lol2:

After Diesel was castrated his coat went to bits, I tried and tried but he was like a ball of cotton wool  :005: didnt want him clipped but knew it was best for him and me.  His underneath is shaved as well but with the sides left on to give the effect if you know what i mean, when he rolls over he looks funny but the overall effect is good.

I love Bob  :luv:  :luv:

and I'm thinking of getting mine clipped to look a bit more like a traditional cocker, ie leave a bit of skirt and legs but then clip all over.  Can I ask what you ask for when Bob's at the salon?  I love the way his head and face are really short and his ears are still long but clipped, what size blade do they use? is Bob castrated?

How often do you take him to be clipped or do you do it yourself?  I've got cheap P&H clippers that I bought to have a mess around with but the only trouble is when I put the dog on the table (kitchen table  ph34r) they just wont stand still so it taskes 2 of us hours to try and have a go and hubby has said i need to learn how to do them myself as he is bored when he has to stand them still  :dunno:

Does anyone know how i should go about growing their fur back, shall I just leave them to nature and then take them to the groomers when they are long and get her to clip it then ala Bob (i can take in a photo of Bob if you wouldn't mind).

I had Archie neutered 1 year ago and it does not seem to have affected his silky coat.  I have just got the coat king and I am very happy with that.  i have vowed never to have him clipped and so fat fully intend to stick to my guns.  The more people I speak to, the more I am convinced this is the right decision for him.  Infact, a groomer who happened to be in the pet shop the same time as me told me that Archie's coat would change colour a little too.

VickyG Hi
I think when i 1st took Bob to the groomer i had a photo
Of the kind of thing i wanted. He has his tummy clipped and under his armpits i don’t know what size blade they use on him..
Yes he is castrated 
I take him every 8 weeks, but i have done him myself before
You be more then welcome to take a photo of Bob to your groomer no problem happy to help...
I would just take them to the groomer and show them what you are after and let them clip where is needed and let the rest to grow in it won’t take long..

Re grooming them yourself.... when i 1st started to do Bob
He would sit down. And i was forever trying to get him to stand up
In the end i used to cut him on the work top and tie his lead to the
Cupboard above, so he could not move so much...

I will see if i can find a better photo for you
