can anyone tell me - do all blue roan spaniels have red rims to their eyes? either way would you be able to tell when they are small puppies what their eyes would be like as adults?

No they don't but it's not a fault even if they do - these red rims are called unpigmented third eyelids & as long as the lids are tight (not loose & baggy), then there's no problem whatsoever although some people prefer the look of particolours if both third eyelids are pigmented (ie are dark not pink) You can tell whether eyelids will be pigmented or not from a very early age, from as soon as a puppy's eyes are open sometimes ;)

Following on from this, could anyone tell me if this unpigmented third eyelid is what Millie has going on with her Right eye? Or does she have a droopy eye?

Just seen the picture after posting a question about droopy eye Jarvis -his looks similar to Millie's but redder and perhaps slighlty more evident. Is this common and would it mean that dogs cannot be shown???

Well I currently show Millie at exemption shows and she has been coming home with BPiS :)
Her first open show is on 21st Sept - so fingers crossed that it wouldn't affect her results there.
Basically I don't think that the white third eyelid is a deformity and hence prevent showing, it is just a cosmetic thing ... pigmented eyelids look better - as Jane Said further up.
I think though that perhaps in the case of open shows / champ shows the presence of a white 3rd eyelid may be "off-putting" to some judges, i.e if they had to choose between two identical dogs and one had a white 3rd eyelid, they may possibly choose the dog without white eyelid... just my opinion on it though :- ??? :)

It wouldn't affect most judges as long as the eyelids are tight fitting - we seem to have done ok anyway with Rhona who has one unpigmented third eyelid & Ruby (both her third eyelids are unpigmented) It's only if the lids are droopy exposing a lot of haw that some judges might decide in favour of another dog, all other points being equal.

What about when more white of the eye is displayed on one eye noticeably more than on the other?? Can anyone advise?

well mine has the same problem my golden dident have this. the vet says she may grow into her eyes ::) :- if not to prevent infection when shes older he might put a stich in one :-[ well id rather her have it now then eye probs later if i could figure how to put photos on id show you her eyes ;)

Sounds like your bitch has loose eyelids (ectropion) rather than unpigmented eye lids. Unpigmented eyelids don't cause any kind of health problems. I personally would wait before deciding on any surgery & preferable get the opinion of an eye specialist before going ahead.

I was going to ask this same question today as only yesterday we noticed Suzie's right eye is very red. Her right eye has always had as I would call it 'a red film' on the bottom eyelid but since yesterday it is much redder than normal and we have thought she might need a visit to the vet. Do you think she is alright?

I am keeping my eye (pardon the pun!) on this thread as Jarvis' is still the same, however, our vet didn't seem to think there is anything wrong ??? Perhaps some just have odd eyes!!

Charlie-Spud has these big lower rims too ... the right eye more than the left.
They go very red when he's been playing or for a long walk so we put it down to being tired.
We asked the vet as well to be told they were fine just as you guys have experienced ... but we were still concerned ... but at 6 1/2 months old so far we've had no problems there. Fingies & paws crossed, but we too are keen on others views.

Charlie-Spud's eyes are fine - unpigmented lids do go red when a dog is tired, it's nothing to worry about :) Dogs will let you know if their eyes are bothering them - they will rub their eyes with their paws, they will keep them half-closed if they are really sore & if there's an infection, you'll see a yukky discharge generally.

Lotties eyes are much the same Tina, infact they are often quite red but more so after a walk. I'm sure it's down to all the effort she puts in trying to pull me home ::)

At least your Charlie Spud's look even ;) - poor little Jarvis has one eye which looks all very dark and the other very simliar to Charlies left eye - his too goes very red when tired or after walks.
Good to know everyone thinks this is normal though - the redness that is not the odd eye!! :D
