How much bran?
« on: October 30, 2003, 07:52:01 PM »
Hi all :D

Have read the posts on anal glands.  My poor cocker is also having problems and  I note that adding bran to her dinner has been suggested.

Can anyone tell me how much I should use and how often

Thank you

Hiya

My vet recommended a dessert spoon of bran in her food once a day. We've been doing this since her problem so shall see how we get on.

They can get it at any age!!  Indie had hers emptied when she was very young ::)  I find she scoots or drags her ickle bum alond the floor a lot, especially after her "doings" and generally fiddling around there :-  I am not sure what the other signs are as these have been the only tell tale signs I have noticed with her.

Emma and Indie :)

Hi, Anita,
What type of bran are you giving and where do you buy it?

The bran I got for phoebe was just from a health food shop (I think the brand is Jordan's but could be wrong). We are now grating carrot into her food and giving her sticks of carrot to chew on.

She seems alright at the mo - no fishy smell!

You could also use weetabix instead of the bran flakes.  Half a weetabix I think would be sufficient ...

Chloe had real bad trouble with her glands.  I give her Tesco Hi Bran, a couple of spoonfuls with her breakfast.  It does have the effect that she poos more than she did but she hasn't had any trouble since the vet suggested it so fingers crossed.

Hi,

I popped to the health shop in town and bought the loose bran.  Its great because its very powdery and fine so Jess doesn't notice it so much in her food.  I was giving weetabix but she was leaving more than she was eating and it didn't crumble up as fine as the loose bran.  Much cheaper to buy it loose too ;D  I had a huge brown paper bag full for just 52p and its organic. ;D
