Does anyone get their working cocker clipped?
« on: January 25, 2012, 01:10:14 PM »
Roxy is getting a bit straggly underneath and I was wondering whether anyone clips workers or do they just let their fur grow wild?

I have both mine handstripped as like them to keep their feathering in parts - works very well for us but costs about £25 per dog 3 or 4 times a year

WIll try and find a decent recent pic of Kooki who is clipped every 8-10 weeks I leave some skirt on her legs and belly almost like a 'show' clip but shorter - i dont know how to link threads but if you look for Nicolas posts in the rescue section she is Cookie there and it will give you an idea of how she looks

Handstripping is when dead/excess hair is removed by hand or by using a special Spaniel comb - this keeps both of mine clean and tidy whilst still maintaining their working cocker look.

I don't do it myself I my gundog trainer who also does grooming does mine.

Yes Lola is regularly clipped.  Ever since being spayed her coat has become really thick (almost woolly like) and when it gets long it gets a browny tinge to it.  (I started a thread on here a long time ago called Going Over to the Dark Side - it may answer some of your questions.)
BUT the main reason for clipping her short is that I really don't have the patience/time to look after a long coat, she became like a broom collecting stuff in her undercarriage which I would then spend the evening picking out  >:D

Bella's booked in next week for a good wash and to have her untidy legs and paws cut, she doesn't have much underneath.

I just use the comb and rubber band method on my two working girls as I like them like that.  Just recently I have trimmed the hair on their tummies to keep them a little cleaner as they do get very dirty/muddy at this time of year.  :D

I have given you a link to a previous discussion.  :D  It starts out about a furminator and then it discusses the comb and rubber band method.  If you follow the link in that discussion, it will lead to another about coat kings and then if you follow the link at the end, it takes you to a photograph of a comb woven with a rubber band. Hope that makes sense to you.  I only ever use this method on my two working girls and just trim their tummies in winter.  :D
