Title: Monty is home - and we are SO HAPPY!!!!
Post by: feefee on February 09, 2008, 06:37:04 PM
Hello all

Our little Blue Roan boy MONTY came home today and we are so delighted!!!

He played for ages in our back garden with my 7 year old and son even chose to go into his crate twice for a snooze without being prompted.  We bought a snuggle puppy complete with beating heart and he has seems to have taken great comfort from this..,   At present he is lying in his cozy bed with his paw over the snuggle pup.

Has had his first milestone too - His first 2 poos were outdoors today- What a boy!!!  -- I know this may be beginners luck but we are ever hopeful..  although numerous pees all in the wrong places.... oh joy.

Any suggestions though - he has been in garden eating all plants, dirt and anything else ----- I take it this is normal for cockers????

Will post photos when I figure out how to do it.... Am so proud to own this beautiful boy

It is normal for the bush eating, Rocky has taken particular favour to my herb patch, but if all else fails, he can always help himself to mud and grass.

Keep Monty away from stones tho, bad for little teeth

Hi all - more advice needed please.

Put him in crate last night and he spent an hour howling but settled down ok after that.  Got him up and out of house at 3 this am to do the needful but today he has seemed so very depressed.  He has spent most of his time in his basket looking pathetic..... Is this normal, is he missing his siblings or are we not doing something we should??  He really is a different dog from yesterday who had such a fun time..

We have tried to encourage him to play and given him a couple of treats and toys to play with but he doesn't seem interested.

My son is quite upset too as Monty is "sad".   HELP!!!  Any suggestions welcome

Aahh sounds like he has just been overwhelmed and is missing his littermates, Let him rest and he will soon be back to that playful little tike from yesterday.

Hi All

I have jinxed myself and spoken too soon - The first 2 nights we had hime home - he was fine in his crate HOWEVER last night was awful!!!! - We got up at 3 am to let him out to do his business but when we brought him back in he howled for the remainder of the night.  He has also been acting strangely today compared to the past couple of days - extremely whiny and crying constantly even sitting in front of me looking at me and crying.. ~I have done everything I can think of - ignoring him, cuddling him, feeding him, letting him out but nothing has helped -

has anyone any suggestions???  HELP PLEASE

It's still really early days, and he'll be trying to find his feet and no doubt still wondering what on earth has happened to his mum and littermates. Bella was a bit similar, first night was great, second was kinda okay, then it all went down the pan and she howled and howled for 8 hours solid for 3 nights. She'd be hysterical by the morning, covered in poo and would sit in my lap trembling and still howling for 20mins before finally collapsing into sleep. Poor little mite, it breaks my heart thinking back on it.  :'(

We moved her into the bedroom with us the next night, in a puppy pen, and she slept soundly after that. She actually stayed sleeping in the bedroom until we got Zorro and decided two cockers in the bedroom was too much, so they now both sleep in the kitchen.

Some people stick it out with the howling until they settle down but we were in a tiny flat and she was only 10ft away from us and it just seemed crazy making her so upset for the sake of 10ft (and the sleep deprivation REALLY got to us as well).

How has he been this evening, has he perked up at all? Is he eating okay etc? If he is, then it could just be he's not sure what is going on around him and is just needing you to be nice and upbeat and show him the way...

Thanks Claire - he has settled a little tonight although wont let us out of his sight and has had a few howls tonight.  We have decided to bring crate upstairs tonight and he'll sleep on landing - our room is far too small.  hopefully this will help.  Its good to know others have experienced similar problems - We dont want to see him overly distressed but equally dont want to smother him.

Will let you know how he gets on tonight - fingers crossed x  Thanks again

I think taking him upstairs with you will help (esp if you can leave your door open so he can see you). It really did settle Bella straight away and then we all got some much needed sleep.

He sounds a bit like Bella was - when she'd been really stressed out overnight she'd be really clingy the next day - I guess from their point of view they've been put in a room and abandoned. Completely. And none of their howls have brought you back. Pretty scary, so it's no wonder they then don't want to let you out of their site when you do finally turn up. It might be a good idea in the daytime though to just start popping out of the room for a couple of seconds at a time without him, then coming back in - lots of times through the day and then gradually, slowly, build up the time. With Bella I had to spend about 3 days just closing the door on her for a few seconds and then going back, and eventually she understood that I wasn't actually abandoning her and she calmed down after that.

Good luck for tonight, hope you all get a good night's sleep.  :luv:

Hiya Claire

Put crate on landing outside our bedrrom door last night and to our delight Monty slept through till 3am howling to go out for a widdle, he went straight back to sleep and woke us up again at 6am for a poo.  Had to crate him again for work this morning and when I came home at lunchtime - he was a changed and happy boy!!! What a difference a day makes

Thanks for the advice  Fee
