I prefer to have the defragmenting run overnight when the pc isn't being used as it can take hours
 And i mean hours!!!
You don't need to be online as it just puts your files and stuff in order  :D
Very technical there wasn't i

:) I did a disk clean up yesterday after Gilly's advice, but when I tried to defrag it didnt seem to be doing anything and stayed on 0% - After just reading what Donna said should I have left it a bit longer - I am quite impatient!

you should do these actions when your PC is not doing anything else at all or you'll get nowhere. You'll need to turn off all scheduled tasks, such as auto updates/AV scans etc that maybe happen when you might be looking to defrag and any screen saver you have. Any proggy kicking in will make the defrag try and start from the beginning and it will only try for three times then give up. The bigger your hard drove and the more files/prog's you have the longer it will take - but overnight is not uncommon.

I won't tell you how long mine takes - just that it doesn't get done often enough
