Can anyone tell me where I might find a copy of the extended breed standard please?

I didn't know there was an extended breed standard :D Do you mean something where the breed standard is discussed in detail with illustrations? Most books on the breed do this eg George Caddy's book. The ECSCA also produce an illustrated breed standard but the US standard is different to the UK/FCI standard - haven't seen anything similar over here.

Hi Jane,
I had been following this thread
http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=60337  and it has discussed cockers a few times with the mention of an extended standard. I thought this would be the best place to ask about it.

Oops, may have sent you to the wrong thread. Will look further to see if I can find where it was discussed

It was this thread, sorry http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=59974

Here is the quote

Quote
I quote from an extension to the standard

"Fine leathers extending to the nose tip"

"Not beyond". They should be long enough to be in balance with the rest of the dog but not too long or too heavy. If tey are over long and heavy there will be a lack of ventilation for the ear canals and prone to camker or they would be a handicap to a working dog. (ie the dog wold trip over its own ears). Once again, exaggeraion is undesirable"

(C.C. Jenkins 1989)

That's taken from C C Jenkin's book on Cockers so it's not an official extended standard, just the author's take on what the standard means. I have that book - think it's the only Australian book on Cockers. It's called "The Cocker Spaniel" by C C Jenkins, published privately by the author in the 80's, not sure if you can still buy it but I've done a quick Google search and the Cocker Club of Victoria have it for sale at $30.

Thanks Jane. That explains things.
Do you know of the best way to get a copy of George Caddy's book? I have googled and get only the US Amazon site that seems to have it for $73 US secondhand. Is it out of print? And is that an expected price for it?

Thanks again.
Oh, and I found a wonderful pic in my travels

Sadly George Caddy's book is out of print so you have to keep an eye out for it being sold second hand. It does sometimes appear on Ebay and some lucky people get it at a good price but other times it can go for quite a lot of money.

Yes that's a great photo on the Scottish Cocker site - a real blast from the past :D

I would say $73 for the Caddy book is a bargain  ;) It is out of print and originally cost about £23 but I've seen it go on Ebay Uk for over £100  :o

Sorry Jane I was posting at the same time.

Just had a look at that photo...loving Wilma's glasses  ;) Is that Richmond Weir on the first picture?

I got a signed copy of The george Caddy book on ebay in Nov 2005.

In the last 6 mths I have only seen 2 for sale  so you may be in for a bit of a wait. (and a lot of competition).
It is very informative, so I would definately recommend it.
