Gold to Gold?
« on: March 31, 2007, 05:52:44 PM »
I heard from a breeder a couple of weeks ago that said it's wrong to put a gold to gold as it weakens the coat and the eyes. I just wondered if this is true?

Thanks  :D

You can certainly breed gold to gold, you just wouldn't want to do it for many generations as it would make for a sparse coat and a light eye color if that's what this person means. You would want to bring in a black or black and tan every other generation or two.

You can breed gold to gold but many experienced breeders prefer not to breed a recessive colour to a recessive colour and believe you get better colour and pigmentation by not doing this. We were advised many years ago by a very famous breeder not to breed orange to orange (the particolour equivalent to gold) and have always followed that advice but of course other breeders have their own ideas so it's really a matter of personal opinion.
