Thanks everyone, Penny is doing extremely well considering everything. She had a much better night last night but I'm still sleeping with her to make sure she is ok. Logan and Phoebe have been very sensitive towards her, it's as if they know something awful has happened and they need to take care. Under normal circumstances Phoebe is like a bull in a china shop. Penny is even being co operative taking her medication. I've been on the internet for more info about it but it's very scarce and I've also been ringing long standing breeders to see how aware they are of this and again some who have been breeding 35-40 years have never heard of or encountered it and others have said they have heard of the odd case. Guess I'll never really know, but I'm just the sort of person who likes to know the why's and reasons for everything. In a sad way I will learn from this experience, but probably more about myself.

I think you've just confirmed how rare it is and I would hazard a guess at it being unpreventable and undetectable unless (like you will know now because of hindsight) you have seen it first hand - and it sounds like once you've seen some strange signs in your pregnant dog of this  then it's really too advanced and radical surgery is the only way.

I would be doing exactly the same thing - I always NEED to know why.  All I can say is that I really really don't think there was anything you could have done, and to be easy on yourself.

Penny is in wonderful hands, and I am so very pleased she's recovering so well  :-*

Only just caught up with this. I'm so sorry for your loss, but glad to hear that Penny is safe. What a heartbreak  :'(

Does she still have her uterus or did she have to be spayed?

Penny is recovering well, I've been checking her wound and it looks clean and healthy. It's only about 8cm long and it's right between her boobies so being as she normally sports a rather large pair no one would ever know it's there. She's eaten  a bit more and she managed to go upstairs today although that was only because someone left the door open and she spied her chance. Looking at her she looks really well, and she doesn't look like she's just been through a nightmare.
Two vets looked at her on the operating table and debated over her uterus, they managed to save her uterus, but I wasn't bothered either way, still just lucky she's alive.
